Deleted UserI have never downloaded from any of the abandonware sites but I have looked at them and they are loaded with some great material.

Have you tried one?

How much trouble to dowmload?

Do you have ethical problems with the use of abandonware?

The truth is I have downloaded from abandonware sites. I see it as not a big problem, as long as its not being sold or manufactured anywhere. I've downloaded Dark eye, 3 skulls of tolteics and bad mojo. I really wanted to play these games but I never found them therefore I just downloaded them.

I have tried 3 about a month ago, and I filled 6 cds with games I could never find anymore.

Some of these would include Loom (the cd version!!!!), all space quests, all larries, all king's quest, dark seed, little big adventure, legend of kyrandia, monkey island 1,2 and many others that when I saw them I felt great nostalgy.

I see no ethical problems since the companies don't support these games anymore. It's like I have two options...not have the game at all, or download it. Which one would you choose? I went on with the first anyway.

I've downloaded only a handful of old DOS games, but haven't played any of them yet. I just downloaded them in case I was never able to find them elsewhere.

I've found a lot of old games on ebay. I much prefer to have the paper manuals and the other stuff that's in the game box on hand when I'm playing the game. They don't make game manuals and extras like they used to. I can't imagine playing some of those old adventure/RPG's without the manual or the map. Cloth maps are really cool.

I love some of the goodies you got/get with the old games. Cloth maps are cool! Hey, this would make a good topic.

I sure don't have any problems with that, nor with emulation. The games I download, are game I wouldn't have bought anyway. The company doesn't loose money, but it gains publicity.

Had it not been for Emulation, I wouldn't have played so many games from Square (Old ones, or Japanese never released in America) and thus, I wouldn't be sold to them as much. Thanks to it, now, should I consider buying a New Gen Console, and games on it, I probably would consider Square's position on the console. I only download games, I can't get otherwise.

I'd never go and download Longest Journey, or Syberia. Because those game are available to me. But I sure don't see what's wrong with downloading, say, DotT or Maniac Mansion.

Yea, I DLed Bad Mojo, Neverhood, and Touche.  I never played them because I knew that I would buy them, one day.   I was DLing them mainly for my roommate.

Oh, and guess what, my shoe started to squeak again!
???  All that damn glue in my shoe for nuting.

I'll just have to glue my shoe again.

I did indeed download one a month or so ago - But I do own the game.  I found that I had a bad install disk and the game is no longer available or supported.

Martian Memorandum - Access Software is no more... and Microsoft doesn't care if old Tex goes the way of the bit bucket.

For the most part the old DOS freebie games are still available (as freeware) if you know where to look.  I still load them up from time to time just to remember where I came from.

I don't have any specific problems with abandoned software sites, so long as the game isn't protected by copyright law.  I suppose this could all be dealt with nicely if the Publishers would release the titles for download on their own.

What?

Nonono...I have regular shoes.  But these are my shoes for playing Hacky Sack.  I'm not as good as when I play in my other shoes... You try it.  You try and play in bad shoes.  It sucks because everyone laughs at you and then you cry.

I consider abandonware preview copies until I find the originals! In the end I still want to own the original boxed copy of the game, but in the mean time there are just some games I am too curious about not to download them...

Sadly, most of those old games won't work on my evil cheap Win98 computer  >
, so I can't play too many.

Emulators do work, though, so I can replay all my old favourites
.

I'll happily download a game that I can't buy anywhere.  If the game becomes available to buy after I've downloaded it, I buy it.

Nothing annoys me more than publishers sitting on classic games - they won't sell them, and they won't make them freely available, so...  nobody can ever play them again?  Poo to that!

Yes, it's really stupid. Giving these games away for free could be used as free advertising for the company and its other games, but nooo, they gotta spend half their budget on advertising in silly game magazines. Bah. No originality whatsoever.

Deleted UserOK.  I plead dumb but what is an EMULATOR? I know what the word means but I don't know how you are applying it to games.

An emulator is a program that makes it possible for you to run games from older computers or consoles. For example with an emulator you could play a playstation game on your pc or you could play a game for old commodores or amigas in your pc.

At least that is what I have heard and read cause I haven't used one. I hope that there is one that does the same thing for ms dos.

And you are not dumb, I think that computer software and hardware has expanded so much (information overload blablabla) that is difficult to keep up with everything.

An emulator is a program which emulates another kind of 'computer', such as a console or one of those coin machines they use in arcades. Using an emulator you can play ROMs, which are games for that machine. Darn it, I can't come up with the right words right now. Grrr.
Anyway, if you have an emulator and download some ROMs you can play all sorts of old games on your PC.

I, for example, played Phantasy Star IV for the MegaDrive / Genesis. I like that game.

Or 'Labyrinth' by Lucasarts for the Commodore 64 - a fun early adventure-ish game.

Yes, I've down loaded games.  If it is an old game and that's the only way I'll ever get to play it.
