The marble fountain, featuring a double stream draft arm, sold for $225. - In New York, Alexander Graham Bell spoke to his assistant in San Francisco, California, starting the first transcontinental telephone service. - In World War II, Thailand declared war on Britain and the United States. - The Beatles reached #1 on the music charts for the first time, with their single, "I Want to Hold Your Hand". - The first annual Emmy Awards presentation took place at the Hollywood Athletic Club, with a mere six awards to present. - The first Winter Olympics began at Chamonix, France. - The League of Nations, forerunner of the United Nations, was founded. - The Supreme Soviet officially ended the state of war with Germany. -The United States accused Iraq of deliberately pumping oil into the Persian Gulf in what it called an act of environmental terrorism.
