This one's really trivial - if you have a decent dictionary. Explain the origin of these three words:

1. Howitzer
2. Pistol
3. Robot

You might be surprised that these three have the same "bithplace"; one is fairly new (1930's), the other two go back to early 1400s.

Very good indeed
Are you an Insightful Linguist too?

Now we just need to know what the original Czech words were and what they meant... and I cross checked it with a US dictionary last night so I know the information is out there

I hate to disappoint you, but nope... Although words are interesting.

Howitzer=haufnice (a catapult that slung many stones at once )
Pistol=p ít'ala (pipe, whistle or firearm)
Robot=robota (servitude or forced labor)

What?

You have gotten the attention of the mysterious lady. She turns to face you. Her face is devoid of any flesh. You are frozen with horror as she begins ripping your body into a bloody mess.

I'm not sure we all mean the same words here; I think Panayotis meant the words "Insightful Linguist", is that correct?

Anyway more on the origins.

1. "Houfnice" is the original Czech word, although what exactly it meant is unclear. It could have been a catapult or ot may have been a short cannon. "Houf" means something like "bunch" but it was also a designation of a military unit (like a platoon or something).

2. "Pistala" is "whistle" and this was a word for a handheld firearm. It is unclear whether the name referred to the fact that the weapon looked like a whistle (short metal barrel on a long wooden stem) or the whistling sound the bullets made (they were subsonic I think).

3. "Robot" is pretty clear. "Robota" is hard manual labor, especially forced. The word was invented by playwright and novelist Karel Capek for his play that described a struggle between humans and what we'd today call androids.

PS: Panayotis, I'm sure about half the words in use today are of Greek origin so please don't try to find all of them
