Riven, I guess.  Possibly ROTS, after I managed to get into the pyramid.
Both games set the kind of mood I like in an AG.

I'm a music fan, and IMHO the music in Myst & The 7th Guest was the best I've heard.

Its difficult to name only one favourite adventure... specially in an adventures forum

Some favourites of mine would be (using movielike genres):

  Thrillers:
*Gabriel Knight Sins of the Fathers
*Prisoner of Ice and Shadow of the Comet
*Lost files of Sherlock holmes

  Comedies:
1. SimonTheSorcerer 1and2
1. Gobliiins 1-4 (i consider woodroof as gob4
) <--- i admit maybe these games arent adventures in the purest sense of the word...
*Big Red Adventure

Best Horror:
Veil of Darkness

  Cyberpunk:
1. DREAMWEB!
This game has the greatest atmosphere and music, also i think it is a one of a kind being a topdown view adventure.
*Beneath a steel sky
*Nightlong
Currently Playing: Dracula Origins&&&&Check out my Videogame Music Covers!! http://www.youtube.com/user/SixStringsGeek

I may have trouble composing a top 10 of my favourite games, but the number one is undisputed.  8-) I've never been that immersed in a game. Just brilliant story line, told fantastically, great puzzles, awesome interface, cool graphics, superb dialogs and voice overs. Hell, I even liked the action sequences near the end of the game.
Oh, and talk about a satisfying ending! Perfect game!

Come on Elfstone, where are you? GK3 needs some extra support in here!

I'll agree with that. I probably would hold GK1 above it, but I'm disqualifying it from the running because I never finished it (which is why I'm looking for a copy now). It's got a great atmosphere, and the, by far, best ending I've ever seen to any piece of fiction. A good game that didn't play like an adventure but had most certainly an Adventure game story line is Clive Barker's Undying. First person shooter set in the 1910's on an almost deserted scotland isle. Damn good horror.

Wimli, I loved GK3, but it's not the best adventure game I ever played...

I can't answer this question. "Best" means, that it is still best if I play it today. Nostalgia tricks me into thinking that some games are that good, but are they really?
I can list a few games that were "magic" or "special" to me in my adventure gaming career:

GK3 - I had a lot of fun with this game. Plus, I was pleasantly surprise and didn't think it would be that good, actually. The story is a wild mix, but I loved it. Puzzles were not always that good, but Le Serpent Rouge made up for most of the bad, including the rather strange endgame, although it wasn't that awful for me. One of the best games I played in the last few years.

Riven/Exile - I knew I would probably love them, because I have been swayed to this kind of adventure by...actually, I can't remember exactly why, but I guess Myst Revelation contributed and most likely Mysterious Journey 2 started my curiosity about this subgenre. Riven was pure magic for one day at least...Exile then surprised me with a bunch of good puzzles and more beautiful scenery.

Going back in time now...

Monkey Island 2 - One of my first funny adventures and it will always have a special place in my heart. Hunting the map pieces was a lot of fun. And it doesn't get tired on replays, apparently. Just love it whenever I play it. As I have said countless times already, I loved the ending for all the sense it made or didn't make.

Sam & Max - That is one game I thought was better until I checked back a year ago...I didn't quite like the gameplay, but it's still about the funniest game ever.

King's Quest 6 - I agree with kuddles...that was the VERY FIRST game I ever played that I thought was mysterious and magical...I'm pretty sure it's not all that great if I play it again, but I remember those moments...starting out on the beach, looking for the ring, those small picture close-ups...the different islands, the tunes, the creatures...the Cliff of Riddles (copy protection, basically...)...the labyrinth and the Minotaur...the pegasus and the blackberry (?)...the great multi-path endgame...
Yes, this game was "magical" as much as UFO was "scary" back in those days...

Under A Killing Moon/Pandora Directive - The stories of those were about the greatest at the time for me, because I really liked/like murder mystery with a twist, plus real actors (who are not too good, though), FMV for the first time in my life. Felt like next generation gaming.

Riddle of Master Lu - I think this might be one of the very best games of all time. I just don't know, beacuse I can't replay it, because I don't have it any more, because...I don't know why!! It's gone and that sucks. I want it back...
I remember most of the puzzles. Wouldn't be that great if I replayed it, I guess. But I can't forget how natural the game felt. I ruined some of that by keeping a checklist of all hotspots when I got stuck once...yes, I tried every single combination possible...and I think it was one of the last on the list that worked.  :

I had no internet and no way to get any clues. Unbelievable.
I think I got stuck again and by then a game mag had the solution so that I could look it up...what a waste...

Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis - replaying took away the magic for me...the multipath was way cool, though.

Woodruff and the Schnibble of Azimuth - one of the greatest games in the shadow of well-known classics...some very HARD puzzles, I remember...as whacky as the Gobliins games which are prequels to this one, I think. Woodruff and most everyone else talk an unbelievable amount of almost-gibberish, Woodruff has the highest-pitch of any protagonist, ever, I guess...also trademarks of the Gobliins games (which I never finished, not one of them, but I should go back to them some day). This game was one of the biggest surprises I got out of a budget buy. That and Last Express, the brilliance of which didn't unfold until I replayed it, btw...

I didn't want to post, but Wimli made me!

I didn't want to post, because I knew I can't answer the question...I would just list all those special games and that's not a real answer. If I had to pick one out of these, I'd go for...hmm...this is TOO tough...

Riddle of Master Lu.
I could be wrong. If I ever play it again...

I agree with you 100% here Elfstone. This is one question that's near impossible to give just one answer to and nostalgia is the trickster. I think if you give an answer to quickly, nostalgia will play too much of a role in the decision. Also, if your someone who has played hundreds of games, I just don't see how they could pick one as the best. I myself have only played (or should I say have only had the time to play) somewhere around 30-40 PC games since I started in 1996. Even with this small number I am still struggling to choose just one and it has taken me awhile to get the nostalgia monkey off my back.

If I had to pick one out of these, I'd go for...hmm...this is TOO tough...

You got that right Elfstone! I specially recommend adventure gamers out there to give this games a try.
Their graphic design, music, sounds, speech and gameplay are simply UNIQUE.
I finished all of them, my favourite is Goblins 3 (hence my nickname), but they are not related by story, you can play them in any order... ill start a topic on these games cause i never saw them mentioned here

Particularly memorable to me though are Deja Vu, for introducing me to adventuring, and Myst for reintroducing me later on.

deja vu? i thought you started with shadowgate

I played both games close together, but I think Deja Vu was first. Admittedly I'm not 100% sure, that was 15-16 years ago and I was going through a ton of NES games at the time. I should just lump Deja Vu, Shadowgate, and Uninvited together as my introduction, as they were all played at about the same time.

Deleted UserThe best I’ve played so far that’s released in 2006 is AGON, The Mysterious Codex – boxed set of games 1-3. ( I mention that because I realize the game’s been selling in installments via the internet for quite some time).

It’s a nice mix of entertaining characters, interesting story, detective work, and challenging boardgames.

Longest puzzle in a game = Hanoi Tower in REAH. ARGHHH it's a toughie!

Hello There!

As Kuddles and Elfstone have stated, Kings Quest 6; Heir Today, Gone Tomorrow was also the first game that I ever played.   The sounds of the waves lapping on the beach.  Moving the log and finding the ring.   The quest for the Love of your life against all the odds.  Where else would I be able to slay dragons as a knight in shining armor for the love of my life.   Lady Cassima..awaits!

Nostalgia does play and tug well on our heartstrings.  It never shakes you loose, and you will always remember that moment.  At least I do.

To me, this is the best game of all, simply because it turn my life around in that there was something besides a worksheet and payroll that I could manage to do with a computer.

This game and the Seventh Guest that I played next, were my epiphany as far as realising that there was a whole world of wonder and dreams waiting for me inside that screen. and the keyboard.

Yes, I would call Kings Quest 6; Heir Today, Gone tomorrow, the best Adventure Game for me for all times.  Add to this the Colonel's Bequest as well.  The lack of hintbooks, or cheats made it all the more challenging to keep trying at it.

I would say that I am currently overdue to play the Colonel's Bequest again!

Well, then you need to update your top 50 list.

I hear what you say about the nostalgia factor. Still, for me the choice remains the same even when I incalculate that. I still replay GK 3 occasionally (even when I have a ton of games left to play/finish
) and I keep loving it. For me, this game scores very high on everything I like in an adventure game, with virtually no flaws that would make it less enjoyable. But of course, to each his own.

Syberia (followed closely by Syberia II and The Longest Journey).

And while I realize this wasn't asked, Mysterious Journey II is the worst. I started playing it a couple of years ago and I still haven't finished...

I think I have to write an entirely new one!

Return to Mysterious Island, Voyage, the Myst games, Discworld Noir  well, that's it for as far as I can remember...but I could rewrite the Top10  with those.

I still have to compile a top 50 from scratch, at least you already have something to start from.

i agree! ppl think that i consider myst/riven to be the worst games, but that's not quite true (although pretty close!)... i think mj2 was the most awful experience i ever had playing an adventure game... at one point i started playing with a w/t, and even that way i just couldn't keep playing... esp that pool that you had to map and walk based on the map... that has to be THE worst puzzle (puzzle?) that has ever appeared on this planet! at least its gfx were good! :

GK3 is the best adventure in my opinion. The plot is just as good as GK2, but Tim Curry as Gabriel makes the difference. For me, Grim Fandango and TLJ are are close seconds, because they succeed in mixing great storylines, fun puzzles and a lot laughs.

This may seem like an odd choice, but Shannara remains my favorite for the strength of the story. While I'm not a fan of the books, the game really sucked me in, although there is more than a little nogstlia there because it is the first adventure game I can remember playing.

My other favorites are no surprise: The Longest Journey, the Syberia series, Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis. And I enjoyed Amerzone more than myst, more because the world -- with its roots in natural history -- appealed to me.

Another that may not seem like an Adventure choice is the first world of the orginal Tomb Raider game, where Lara Croft explores an underground city, stumbles upon a lost world of dinosaurs, etc. It had all the elements I enjoyed, plus those first few levels were focused more on exploration and puzzle-solving than quick fingers.

I agree too. it's was the first game in years that  I never finished  and I stick to a game a very long time just so I can feel that it's completed.
