I so want to see all the historic sites in Roma and Pompeii and Venice. Enjoy yourselves. Looking forward to the photos.

In the BC era (Before Children), my wife and I frequently vacationed in Europe. Since we had children and the AD era (After Doom) emerged, we have, largely at my urging, vacationed at beach resorts involving a 2-3 hour plane trip or a car ride. My wife thinks the kids are ready for something bigger. I disagree but, alas, we men must compromise on some things in marriage. So we are off to the motherland, where we will spend one week in Rome during the Easter break.
Here's the rub. Our flight departs New York at 10 p.m. That means everyone on that flight will be hoping for a quiet peaceful journey so that they can sleep well and not be completely spent when we arrive in Europe the next day. In contrast, my kids, ages 5 and 7, are extremely spirited and tend to become a bit, let's say restless and excitable, particularly when they are in a new and unusual environment. So, there you have it, the irresistable force and the immovable object.
How this will go is unknown, but I have a stange feeling that I will forever be remembered by some 200-300 people on this planet, and referred to in their conversations with others, as "that a$$hole with the kids".

Seriously, there are gentle sleeping pills you can buy over the counter here just for these circumstances. Our recent trip back from Tasmania was destroyed by two families of wild and noisy kids (they were made to sit at the back). My kids of course, being older, behaved impeccably.
Don't give your kids any cola or iced coffee drinks for 24 hours before the flight. Feed them stodgy food like hot potato chips and bread (burgers?). Take them bags of sweets because if they stay awake all night, at least it'll stop them moaning. I am so not envious of you now and I hastily withdraw my offer to carry your wife's shopping bags, or whatever else I may have foolishly suggested....
You're on your own - or at least, you jolly soon will wish you were. [smiley=devil_smiley_grintail.gif]

It is sometimes the best entertainment for me on long international jouneys. Don't squelch them, let them live, the people around them will survive. I revel in it. I mean, of course, if they're not TOO annoying...
