Well, welcome back Betje. BTW: Speaking of old games, I'll have you know that I finally snagged a copy of Milo (you had mentioned it some time back in another thread and I'd been looking for it ever since!).

The future ain't what it used to be!

I did? Hope that didn't cost you a lot of money.

Haven't played Milo yet. I will one day, but not in the near future.

Interesting site Betje! Like Elfstone, I haven't played even half of them, Indy 4 being one of those.  :

Good to see you back! What have you been up to game-wise?
Me, I'm finally playing Black Mirror (new computer and all.
). So far, so good, not great though. Another one that is partly ruined too because of an awful Dutch localisation (and there are some other things that bother me as well). Still, it's good enough for me to wanting to play it till the end.

What fun to see video from these games. Thanks for the link, Betje.

Life should NOT be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in an attractive and well preserved body, but rather to skid in sideways, chocolate in one hand, wine in the other screaming, "WOO HOO what a ride!!!

Heh. Why not ask the owner of the site? He has a guestbook.
Personally, I don't mind. I'm delighted he puts less well-known games in the spotlight.

Ha die Wim!

A Dutch localisation of Black Mirror sounds awful. Bas Westerweel (Faust! huuuu! ) would be the perfect choice to copy the lacklustre English voiceacting of the hero.

My most recent adventure game was Discworld Noir. I'd been wanting to play it for ages but ran into unsurmountable problems on all three my computers. Someone on another forum mentioned it and for the umpteenth time I said to myself: I really really want to play this one. So I finally took action, started searching the Web for help and found it.
It's still a buggy little game as far as I'm concerned, it crashed to the desktop dozens of times, but that was a minor irritant.  Enjoyed it, although my expectations had been too high. I lost interest near the end. There's only so much dialogue you can take...

No no, apparently they only had a small budget, so they kept the mediocre English voices, but they slapped Dutch subtitles on them, in a translation that makes the English voices sound like dialogs written by Edgar Allen Poe.
The problem is they didn't stop there. They translated all the words that appear at the top of the screen, when the cursor moves over a hotspot, into Dutch, without the English ones there. So when they are talking about certain objects or locations In English, you sometimes have no idea what they are talking about as the Dutch hotspot words means something totally different! How about this one: the greenhouse on the grounds of the the Black Mirror castle is not translated by 'serre' or something like that, but by the word 'kas'. I mean, what's that all about?
Oh, and remember the word puzzles at the end of chapter two where you get some riddles and have to put down the answers to unlock the first key? Well, the riddles are still in English, but the answers you have to give have to be in Dutch. It took me hours to figure that out, and I knew the answers to the riddles! It really doesn't make any sense!  :

Ah, haven't played that one. Is it that buggy? Hm, I remember something that the rereleases of this game had been patched compared to the original release. Which one did you play? Or were there other technical problems then crashes at first? And that many dialogs? I always loved the dialogs and voices of the first Discworld game. They're not as good in this one?

I think after I round up Black Mirror, I might be in some comedy mood. I think I'll finally get round to playing Zork Grand Inquisitor.
What's up next for you?

I know what you mean. I have the German version of Touche: the Adventures of the Fifth Musketeer. For once they kept the English voices and used German subtitles. But the many objects on the screen and in your inventory are in German, which is not only weird but also confusing and unimmersive as hell.

I don't really know if I have the original release, I guess so. The game just refused to start after installation. It seemed to make an effort to do something when I clicked the "play" button, but I never left the desktop. Like a firecracker that sizzles and doesn't take off.
When I finally got it to play recently (where would I be without Internet help), the crashes were annoying but not a problem because they occurred randomly. I saved often, so all I had to do was start the game again and the same scene would play flawlessly.

Yes, it's a game of dialogues. You move the story along by talking to the right people about the right subject, although that's not the only thing you do, there's other interesting stuff too. But it's not an inventory-based game like Discworld 1 and 2. Some of the same voice-actors. The dialogues are much longer and totally different though, after all it's a noir detective game, so you know what to expect. But they are very good and funny too. There's just a tiny bit too much of it for my taste.

I think after I round up Black Mirror, I might be in some comedy mood. I think I'll finally get round to playing Zork Grand Inquisitor.

Oh yes! Do play ZGI, it's a great classic. I realize there must be some people who didn't like the game, but I've never met them.
I'm one hundred percent sure you won't regret it.

I'm currently playing Keepsake, but before I switched to Discworld Noir I was having various problems with an oldie by Legend (Mission Critical) and I'd like to get back to that one too. Probably have to reinstall it on my win95 machine, which appears to suffer from metal fatigue.

Wow, Betje.  Thanks for turning me onto Game Nostalgia.  What a great site!  I finally got to see a taste of The Riddle of Master Lu, which I've been thinking of getting after all these years.

Ahh, Mission Critical!  I've still got that in the box.  An inventive game that one.

I have to say, that site is one of the most enormously cool sites I've ever seen...

Backpacker looks like something I'd dig.

And by all means, play Master Lu! One of the best games, ever. If I find out who stole it from me I will give them the beating of their lifetime!

Yeah, it's a great site, so many details and screenshots and extras.  Spoilers too though, that can't be avoided. So if you haven't played Master Lu yet, don't look at all the screenshots.

Check, will not be getting German version of Touche.
I just don't know what they were thinking! And unfortunately, the same company has also published the localised Dutch versions of Nibiru and Journey to the Center of the Earth. It's like they honestly don't want us to buy their games! If you don't have the budget to do a decent localisation, then don't do one, simple as that. Plus, I'd actually prefer it they would just release the English versions. Honestly, would there be that many people who would refuse to buy it if these games weren't translated? I mean, I recall that most Sierra adventures would be released here with English manuals and all. What changed?

Ok, thanks for the info. I would still like to get this game, looks like it's something I'd enjoy. Besides, the Discworld games could use a slightly less immense inventory.
Lately, some copies of the game have passed by on ebay (be), at reasonable prices. I'm betting the price will soon be right for me.

Oh yes! Do play ZGI, it's a great classic. I realize there must be some people who didn't like the game, but I've never met them.

I have already started it once, but have absolutely no idea why I stopped playing it. Probably had too many games on my plate at the time and only took ZGI for a test drive.
Now it's time to get down to business in Zork.

Ah, Keepsake looks good graphics-wise. Don't know whether it will be a game for me though. Don't know why exactly. Mission Critical has always appealed to me (sci fi fan), but somehow I never actually bought it. Might re-add it to my ebay hunting list.

It's rather hard to find nowadays. I got myself an unboxed copy on ebay, paid about 40 dollars for it.  IMO, an okay game, but nothing more. Not enough excitement for me, I guess.

About Discworld Noir... I did like it. Really. It could have been a top game. One thing that spoiled it for me was that it was too buggy. Not just the crashes. I was happily playing along and doing everything I could think of when suddenly Act II was triggered and a few locations became unavailable. I thought nothing of it, but pretty soon I was stuck and the story refused to move forward. I didn't want to consult a WT, so I kept at it for hours. In the end I was so frustrated that I had to give up. The walkthrough was a revelation. Apparently I had done too much in Act I and some locations were not supposed to show up until Act II. I had visited Maudlin Bridge in Act I and it disappeared in Act II although I should visit it several times. No way I could have known that! Of course I couldn't remember when I'd done what, so eventually I was forced to replay half of Act I.

Definitely get Mission Critical.  It's one of the very few Myst-style puzzle-rich games I've enjoyed.  I'm not a fan of super-puzzly first person games, but I found a copy of Return to Mysterious Island last week at my local computer book store and am really enjoying it, so I'll probably be looking a wee bit  deeper into this style of game.  For the eternal record, other games of this type I like are The Dark Eye and The Mystery of the Mummy.
