Fair enough.

I was merely pointing out the fact that the arrow key layout (if memory serves me right) was more common back in the day (for instance on Heretic and Hexen). Then again I have not touched the original Doom, Hexen, or Heretic in at least 10 years so I could be completely wrong on this.

Mouselook and true 3D changed the genre, and didn't exist with Wolfenstein or Doom.

One of the things I particularly like about today's FPS games is their Myst-like qualities.....

The future ain't what it used to be!

I don't remember about Hexen and I never saw Heretic, but Doom used WASD. Doom was the first computer game I ever saw being played. My "boss" (I had work study at the university) used to play it during break time back when it first came out. And I remember asking him about why he was using the WASD keys to control it instead of the arrow keys (it's so your right hand is free to move the mouse).

I would have said being able to remap keys changed the genre. I don't know which was the first game to allow you to remap keys, but it's not recent.
And I'm not sure why you say Doom isn't "true 3D" but I don't know what you mean by "true." Tomb Raider had a mouse look, but again I'm not sure if it's the type you mean. Anyway, these aren't exactly recent innovations, even if they did come after Wolfenstein and Doom, or even Tomb Raider.

.

It was not just one title or one innovative component that dramatically changed the FPS genre over the past decade and a half - since the early days of Wolfenstein 3D and Doom. It was numerous refinements to the original formula along with many significant, all-new elements that were introduced in dozens of different games over several generations of overall PC hardware and software advancements in addition to the growth of the web.

Cheers,  Terry

Scorpia's reviews are always excellent.  I remember when she used to write for CGW, and had her own column and everything.  Those were the days.

True 3D means a truly 3-dimensional world.  In Doom and Wolf-3D, the maps were essentially flat.  Even in Doom where there was the illusion of levels, there were no rooms on top of rooms because the engine couldn't handle it.  Quake was the first game to be truly 3D and make mouselook the preferred method of control.

Won what?

A few pages back there was debating going on, now there's just discussions of FPS games.  :

I love eggs in the morning.
Dyslexics wonder why there isn't a word that means the same thing as "cinnamon."

Correct. Same for Duke Nukem 3D and all other games using the Build engine.

Quake was the first game to be truly 3D...

Not really. Ultima Underworld, which predates Doom, and later System Shock, had more fully developed 3D than Doom (though not as good as Quake). The first major game that was truly 3D was Descent. UUW came out in 1992, Descent in 95, Quake in 96.
I forgot my sig.

Yea, you're right.  Quake was the first game to make mouselook the standard control scheme for FPS games, though.

Oh OK. Now I get it. Steering with the mouse instead of the arrow keys.

And congratulations Sir Funk.

Can you please provide information on Benoit Sokal's recent activities.  I played Amerzone and Syberia I and II but then took a break from gaming so lost contact with his work.
id Benoit Sokal release any games after Syberia II?  Thanks!
