It's bad enough that Holly got the license to a perfectly great game series, and now they make it worse by adding characters to the original game. Damn them.
What's even worse, is that they were still writing the majority of the script WHILST they were shooting the film.
Uwe Boll is the only thing that hasn't made this film sound bad so far.

He's been answering fan questions on the official site for a while now, though, and I have faith that the film will turn out well every time he makes an update. He really seems devoted to retaining the spirit of the game, and the fact that he has the original creator of the game being a consultant for the film shows that.

For you maybe, but I thought the first "Tomb Raider" was pretty damn good. I thought the trailer for SH was awesome and follows the spirit of the game pretty well. We can only hope the movie does the rest.

Since I was never that big a fan of the Tomb Raider action-adventure game series, I really didn't care if the movie deviated or added new angles. The film was lots of fun to watch and Angelina looked faaaaaaaanstastic every second of the way. The FX were terrific and the acting was perfect for a big budget blockbuster action flick. So IMO, it all worked and it worked very well.
The story and main villian in the sequel though were kinda bland by comparison and I never bought the whole former romance angle. There just wasn't much heat going on between the two stars. So I didn't like it nearly as much as the original. However, it too was better than average for that type of mindless, popcorn-munching escapism movie. Sames goes for the Resident Evil films. They were more than good enough.
Cheers, Terry

You have gotten the attention of the mysterious lady. She turns to face you. Her face is devoid of any flesh. You are frozen with horror as she begins ripping your body into a bloody mess.

Oh that's just nonsense.
The first Tomb Raider movie starring Angelina Jolie was decidely better than 90% of all the crappy, derivative, action-adventure films ever made. It was also better than most of the fx-laden / story-lite fantasy, sci-fi and horror garbage that Hollywood was spit-out over the past several decades. That list is terribly bottom heavy too.
So what if TR was not in the same league with the very best of the genre (like the first two Indiana Jones movies)? It was far from "awful" compared to the vast majority of all similar films. In comparison to most, it had superb production values (by any standards), a solid cast and a better-than-average story with terrific editing, sound and some exciting action scenes.
Debuting in June 2001 at #1 with almost $50 million in initial ticket sales, the film went on to make lots of money for all involved and it firmly established Angelina as a genuine blockbuster action-adventure star (not that she ever wanted to be just that). Now she can pick and choose scripts ranging from straight, Oscar worthy dramas and socially responsible pictures to the next mega budget popcorn flick for the masses.
In a nutshell, relative to most action movies, TR was at the very worst, average.
Cheers, Terry

Yes I do like boobs - especially when they are just two of many alluring assets prominently displayed by a talented actress like Jolie in a film that has "superb production values (by any standards), a solid cast and a better-than-average story with terrific editing, sound and some exciting action scenes."

I think the best video game movie to date was Final Fantasy, and even that was very mediocre.

Yuck, the FF film had about as much sex appeal as a plastic coathanger. It felt very artificial, sterile and forced from end-to-end. TR on the other hand at least starred a real live human actress with real live human boobs (padded as they may have been). So did the Resident Evil movies, which were also far superior to that failed experiment in ultra (non) realistic animation known as FF. Sorry but it just fell flat as a pancake.
Cheers, Terry

But of course to each his own. As far as "Silent Hill" after seeing the trailer Kami posted awhile back, I've got high hopes for it.

Final Fantasy was boring and sterile, you're absolutely right. I'll take boring and sterile over actively bad, though, which both Tomb Raider and Resident Evil were.
Also, I'm going to let you in on a little secret. There's this stuff called pornography. Lots of very nice boobs, totally uncovered. You should look into it.

In a sci-fi-action-fantasy flick, nothing is worse than boring and sterile - nothing.
That aside, what the heck is "actively bad" supposed to mean? Is that some odd way of saying "camp"?
Oh, and thanks anyway juji but porn is the worst kept secret in history.
