If someone can help me run "
" (an old DOS game) on Windows 98 without any problems, I would be thankful. Until now, I have only managed to run it without sound. Something's wrong with the generic soundblaster drive or whatever.

PS: Cool to be first poster!!!

Deleted UserI am as far from a computer geek as one can get but I do know of a site that might help you:

try ENDitAll2 at

http://home.ptd.net/~don5408/toolbox/enditall

You can also use a search engine like Google (my personal favorite) and type in:

DOS games on Windows.

I just did that and received many sites to try for DOS/WIN help.

I hope that this helps.

I've had a hell of a time getting old dos (and even some older windows games) in the past, and the ones that I could get working were, as you said, without sound.

I don't know if this is in any way helpful but...

What sound card are you using? There should be some kind of SB16 emulation with it (on newer soundblaster cards at least) which if opened via system properties should give you the settings you can use when setting up the soundcard in older games (IRQ, DMA, etc).

Sorry if this is of no use but its been ages since I attempted to run any older stuff (with sound).

I happen to have D and W98 - let me load it in and see if I can get it to work.  Sennebec I have Dark Seed and got it to work just fine with a W98 shortcut but I also have a  PCI SB Live sound card using the older drivers.  What sound card do you have?

hi

found this on another site which might be helpful i think

good luck!!

You have to set up your DOS environment settings for your sound card.
You'll need to add a line similar to this in your 'Autoexec.bat' file

SET BLASTER=A220 I5 D1 H5 T4

This sets an environment variable that describes the settings of your sound card to DOS apps,
including games.

how to edit .bat files

First of all, the 'autoexec.bat' and 'config.sys' files are located in the root directory of the drive you boot from.
This is usually the 'C' drive, so the folder for the two files would be 'C:\'.
No matter how many other files you find under these names in different folders,
the ones in the root directory are the ones that define the behaviour of your computer.

The 'autoexec.bat' and 'config.sys' files are simple text files.
There's nothing magical or mystical about them.
You can edit them with a perfectly normal text editor like Notepad.
Don't be afraid of editing these files, you cannot cause any unrecoverable errors to your system by simply modifying them.
Apart from a couple special commands, the worst you can do is decrease the amount of free conventional  memory you have or disable one of your device drivers.
To make sure that you can revert to your previous settings, always make backup  copies of your system files before editing.

hope it helps

Hi there,

I still can't run the game with the sound on. I appreciate all of you that tried to help, though. Here's an update:

When I attempt to start the game (by executing LAURA.EXE) I get the following message:

Can't init MILES drivers.

Then I am kicked back to the DOS prompt.

I inserted the suggested SET BLASTER line in the autoexec.bat in my root folder, but with no results.

In the game's program group (C:/ACCLAIM) there's a folder called "
RV" which has the SETSOUND.EXE and a bunch of .dig files named after soundcards (eg. SBLASTER.DIG). These files contain a page of jumbled characters. Maybe the contents of these files are corrupted and that's my problem. There's also a file there named "
IG.INI". I tried to add the SET BLASTER=etc. line where I thought was appropriate, but again, with no results. When I execute SETSOUND.EXE the program cannot automatically find a soundcard and even when I select the card manually and enter the parameters it doesn't work.

So, anyone want to have a go at this again?

Did you find a solution for this Expat?
I've been trying to run D in a DOS box in Windows 98 and by using Display Doctor for the Vesa compatibility and checking the "prevent DOS programs from detecting Windows" and "Full screen" boxes I have gotten as far as to watch the intro movie. The sound works for me with the following setting; Soundblaster Pro, 220, 5, 1.
However; after the intro movie one is supposed to press enter to begin the actual game. Problem is the puter hangs when I try to do so! Anyone have any suggestions?

Look to see if you have a folder called Creative.  If you do it will probably be in your Program Files folder on your C: drive.  If you do, then add the following lines to your autoexec.bat file:

SET MIDI=SYNTH:1 MAP:E
SET SOUND=C:\PROGRA~1\CREATIVE\CTSND
SET BLASTER=A220 I5 D1 H5 P330 T6

In the third line, you may have to change I5 to something else.  Many systems will use I7.  Try that if I5 doesn't work.

I have found that on many of my DOS games I have to install and play in PURE DOS (not DOS prompt) in order to have sound.

Myriex: No, I haven't found any solution yet, though I have managed to see the intro with sound, too - almost the same way you have.. And then CRASH! Looks like you and I have similar set-ups. Please post to this topic if you can make any progress.

MikeyAZ: No, I don't have a creative folder in my program files.

Judy: You are right, of course. The game plays but I can't get any sound in pure DOS. On the other hand,  in a DOS window I get the sound but the game crashes after the intro.

So, D is still sitting on my shelf gathering dust...

Well, if it crashes after the intro for you too there's probably very little to be done about it. I tried a couple of more times with slowing down the CPU with Turbo and the CD-drive with Drivespeed but to no avail.

I'm also having trouble with this game, but not with the sound.  When I run the game, all the images are surrounded by green pixels.  I've pretty much decided I'm just going to have to go back to Windows 98 (I'm currently running XP), but I figured I'd ask here on the off chance that someone could help me with this.

It's really hard to google for a game named "
" and Acclaim doesn't even list it in their support forum.  I hate it when companies forsake their old games like that.

Expat, what sound card do you have installed? You can go to your device manager and select sound device or go to accessories/system tools on the start menu and select 'system information' to find out.
