Hello everyone,

I joined this forum so I could get advice from people who really know adventure games as my head is spinning from googling and trying to find something appropriate.

I introduced my niece and nephew to the Broken Sword series and they've just finished The Smoking Mirror. They are 7 and 8 and absolutely loved it, it was fantastic listening to them constantly discussing the complexities of the story and solving the puzzles, they fell into the world completely and my nephew didn't fire and gun or do a spin kick once.

The problem is that I have the third one in the series but my niece has been having nightmares. Considering BS3 starts not too pleasantly I thought I'd ask you guys here what you'd recommend that would provide the same challenge and humour as Broken Sword but is maybe a little bit more dream friendly?

I have had a look around and the Monkey Island series, Sam and Max look good and they both said they liked the sound of time travelling in The Day of the Tentacle but I just don't want someone beheaded all of a sudden on screen and my brother come hunting for my blood.  I'd really appreiciate your expertise so I don't scar them both for life

Thanks in advance

I think most LucasArts games are good for kids.

I'd go for Curse of Monkey Island.  But maybe a chance that your niece would have nightmares about Captain LeChuck?

Sam & Max has a lot of Tom & Jerry style cartoon violence.  I don't think there'd be any problems with Day of the Tentacle.
...not to be confused with Keira Knightley

Captian LeChuck does look a bit scary and I think it was the skeleton thing that really scared Tamsin so I'll leave Monkey Island alone for now.

I'm really pleased that you said The Day of the Tentacle was ok because I really liked the sound of that too. I also read on the scummvm site that you can get Manic Mansion and DoTT bundle for around £15 which is not bad at all. Sam and Max sounded good too so I might give them the choice.

I'm still open to more opinions

It's hard to tell what may scare kids at that age. DOTT may be cartoony, but the unusual characters and bizarre situations in the game might make it hard for them to like it.

I'd definitely not go for Sam & Max. It's not a kids game. There is plenty of dark and/or adult humor in the game, not to mention cartoon violence.

Broken Sword has some scenes with blood, too. I'm sure you might see much worse things in the news, for example, but there are some graphic scenes. I think there were none in BS2, though. You seemed to be ok with it, anyway.

Monkey Island also has some humor kids might not get or shouldn't get...but I can't remember anything specific right now. I guess it won't hurt them, despite LeChuck might be creepy, I can't really tell. He IS quite creepy in MI3. But then again, he's talking ridiculous stuff and that should take away the nightmarish effects.

DOTT should be perfect (there's only something about a hamster in there that is questionable...
) and they might learn something along the way.

Another game I'd highly advise against despite the cartoon-y landscape is Toonstruck. There is dark humor and some scenes not meant for kids.

Simon the Sorcerer 1 and 2 should be ok. The first is a parody of all sorts of fairy tales, the second game moves away from that and mocks various things. Not sure if any of them had dark humor. If so, it was subtle enough.

Come on, Curse of Monkey Island will be great for your nephews! They'll probably lose the fear of skeletons after they see Murray!

Sam & Max is OK as well, I think. There's so many funny things happening and so many lines of no-sense dialogue, that even if they don't get all the jokes, at least half of it will make them smile.

I'm on the opinion that cartoon violence is OK, as long as kids have an open discussion with their parents and relatives. It's not good to hide these things from children, they'll learn from someone else, probably from another kid, and learning these things without adult supervision is a lot worse, no doubt.

Hey, my younger brother was about that age when he played all those games, even the Leisure Suit Larry ones. He turned out OK in the end!
And yes, he does respect women, even after playing as Larry! 8-)

There are several Scooby Doo adventures available which are great fun but maybe if they've done Broken Sword they'll find those a little easy?. Also [if you can get hold of them - eBay I'm afraid] there are set of Famous Five adventures which push the difficulty a little more.

I just wrote a long reply but my internet explorer is playing up today and is randomly closing windows. >

Shany, you are right, it is so hard to tell what will scare a child. When I was little I was scared of James and the Giant Peach and I once had a scary dream about friend who have been shrunk and a steak and kidney pie after watching Honey, I Shrunk the Kids. Maybe I have a fear of oversized food? :-/ Anyway, cartoon violence doesn’t upset either of them but I know dead bodies, people getting shot, skulls etc can cause nightmares for Tamsin. As for the bizarre situations I think as long as they were comprehendible within the whole story they would be ok. They understood most of the Templar story and were quite disappointed when there was no mention of the Templars in the sequel. They got very excited when the spotted the Templar crosses and the Broken Sword symbol in the opening scene of BS3. I think that between them and with guidance from me we can make sense of the story… hopefully.

Elfstone and DJ Souza, lol, conflicting opinions. Cartoon violence I don’t think is too bad for them, well it’s not something that will cause problems sleeping, I know that they are pretty hardened to that kind of thing. An axe to the head never seems so bad when it’s a cartoon cat. [smiley=zombie.gif] (<-- I really like that smiley) They are great at not copying any bad behaviour or language; they understand the effects that it has in real life better than some adults I know! As for grown up jokes I think most of them will go waaaay over their heads. There was a joke that came up in one of the BS games (I can’t remember which) that almost made me choke on my tea and they were totally oblivious.

I did come across Toonstruck at one point and immediately discounted it, very creepy. I will have a look at Simon the Sorcerer so thank you.

And Lmao @ Leisure Suit Larry :

Reckless, Scooby Doo sounds good but I think you are right that it might be a bit too easy. Even if they weren’t easy I could get murderous after all that Scooby ‘humour’. I never knew there were famous five games so even that could be worth a look.

Thanks everyone for your input,

Katie

You could probably also try a couple of freebies - for example 5 Magic Amulets or the Apprentice 1 and 2 - all worth playing and I would think something kids would enjoy.

I should clarify that I don't necessarily think that cartoon violence is damaging to kids. Neither do I think that nightmares are completely bad for them, but you don't have to push it, I guess.

So, Sam & Max could be just fine. But I stick to my opinion in regards to Toonstruck. The SM cow might not be something for them, for example.

I feel the pressing urge to replay this game once again (4th time would it be, I believe)...almost can't remember anything yet again.
