I would like to hear from other independent developers about what are they using as game engines. (specially those composed of 1 or 2 people!)
I am not a programmer, the other stuff for me is pretty easy, 3d, vfx, video in 24p, composition, design. I prefer the Mac platform.
My roots comes from titles like "Myst" that was created with hypercard (which I used to teach here in Apple, Puerto Rico)and always loved the software. After spending $4,000 in training, traveling trying to learn "mTropolis" i just found out 1 week later killed by Quark,Inc. I was really depressed jumping from software to software looking for a nice solution but nothing.
I have seen UNITY, TORQUE (crossplatform cool) but need to know C++.
I mainly want to combine Quicktime movies with interactivity, QTVR 360, multiple sounds/music and be able to use variables to control inventory items.
I have seen the AGON games (http://www.agongame.com/) and found them to be very like what I want.
Is anyone using FLASH for point & click adventures?
I would like to hear the recommendations of software available and the pros and cons of developing with them.
thanks!
Ben

I have been using the Adventure Maker engine www.adventuremaker.com but it is only for Windows use.
It can be used with or without scripting. I think that there are some people using Flash with Adventure Maker and I believe it comes with a plugin for it.
Even if you know only a little programming (things like If. . .Then or Select case. . .) you can do a LOT with the script ability of the engine.
The engine itself is quite easy to use and allows for Point and Click first person as well as 3rd person style games.
Certainly worth your while to take a look at.

If you don't wish to learn programming, then a veritable number of resources have already been recommended. If you're prepared to learn a language, then your options become even greater. You don't need to spend a lot of (or any) money to achieve fantastic results, but you do need to know what you want to achieve.
I recommend C++ and some kind of graphical API, like DirectX (Windows platform) or OpenGL (Cross platform). None of those are specifically adventure game engines, but using them means you will be able to make your own.

Status : Online | All of the Point & Click adventures that I have created for Pinhead Games have used Flash. I worte a proprietary engine in sctionscritp that works pretty well, but it still requires quite a bit of programming. I have not yet made a 1st person Myst type game, but flash seems to be able to handle the task well, especially with Flash 8's enhanced video options.
While not exactly Quicktime VR, I have worked on a Flash game that utilizes a scrolling panoramic image loop. You can get pretty close to Quicktime VR with flash.

There is also in alpha testing right now LassieAS, which is a version of the engine that will export Flash native games.
