snowtimeJourneyman![]() ![]() Posts : 1014 Joined: 28 JUN 2005 Status : Online | Doesn't quite equate to a list of top films, but a list of DVDs I have bought/want to buy includes the following (with star system to indicate particular favourites based on number of times I've watched them): Alien** Amadeus Amelie Amercian Beauty Back to the Future Being John Malkovich Belleville Rendezvous (called the Triplets of Belleville in the US?) Best in Show Blade Runner The Blues Brothers** Brazil*** The Castle (Aussie film. We have it on video, can't seem to find a DVD version) Clueless** Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon Cyrano de Bergerac (Depardieu) Donnie Darko Duel Edward Scissorhands Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind The Full Monty** Jean de Florette Lost in Translation Lord of the Rings 1, 2 & 3*** Manon des Sources Memento*** Monty Python & the Holy Grail Monty Python's Life of Brian Moulin Rouge The Muppet Christmas Carol** Rain Man The Remains of the Day Schindler's List Shrek 1 & 2** Sideways Silent Running (for the SF hippy in me) Sleeper Star Wars (IV, V & VI) The Station Agent Topsy-Turvey Twelve Monkeys The Usual Suspects The Virgin Suicides I'm sure there are other movies that are on my list of favourites, but as I don't have that list written down anywhere, this will have to do for the time being. * I love deadlines. I like the whooshing sound they make as they fly by. |

For those trying to suggest titles for addition - this spawned out of the wildly off topic Top 10 of 2005 thread where we discu ssed our 100 favourite films... All are welcome to post their personal 100 lists! Mark! Deep breaths! It's surprisingly easy once you sit down with a pen. Use the IMDB top 250 if it helps, or scan a DVD collection. Think of your ten favourite comedies, then your ten favourite thrillers, foreign language films, animations, sci-fi's, horrors, dramas... films with Naomi Watts.... you'll get there.... No order, btw (except for the first few, most likely). Just as they come to mind. Memento Fight Club Pulp Fiction One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest (right, Funk ) Groundhog Day Crash Alien Alien 2 Terminator Terminator 2 Almost Famous American Beauty Invasion of the Body Snatchers (with Donald Sutherland) Raiders of the Lost Ark Collateral The Last Samurai Lost in Translation The Apartment The Maltese Falcon Die Hard Die Hard 2 Die Hard 3 (entertainment ) The Shining The Thing Evil Dead Apocalypse Now Eternal Sunshine Of A Spotless Mind Something About Mary The Emperor And The Assassin 7 Samurai (Shichinin no samurai) Spy Game Leon The Professional Lethal Weapon Lethal Weapon 2 (or was it 3? well, NOT 4) Fargo A Simple Plan Shawshank Redemption (almost forgot about it, but it's great) The Hours The Others Dawn of the Dead (original - remake ranks as one of the worst movies...) Training Day Traffic Snatch Thirteen Days Das Experiment Dead Poets Society LOTR 1 LOTR 2 LOTR 3(somewhat annoyed by it, though, that's why I put them here ) Finding Nemo Monsters Inc Shrek Blade Runner Back to the Future Back to the Future 2 Star Wars The Empire Strikes Back The Fugitive Interview With The Vampire * looking in IMDb account... Batman Cube Forrest Gump (destroyed by school's analysing madness...) Galaxy Quest (really??) The Green Mile Lek (hmm...Dutch crime movie, apparently) [s]Matrix[/s] Scarface (Pacino remake) [s]Starship Troopers[/s] Tremors (yes! almost forgot about it...classic movie!) * picking some 8-graders (sounds strange, I know) Caddyshack Cast Away Chinatown (must definitely be in here) The Exorcist Face/Off From Dusk Till Dawn Good Will Hunting Gladiator The Game Jackie Brown Once Upon A Time In America Scream [s]The Thin Red Line[/s]...what the hell?? how did this get in here? I hated that movie...someone must have been hacking my account Saving Private Ryan Secretary Total Recall Twelve Monkeys Une femme est une femme (Anna Karina) Wild Things (what? that movie was clever...) Was that close? Don't think so. I count 85. And some of them are rather desperate... : playing: Destination Treasure Island (done in two sittings, but it's nice), Syberia (ho-hum), Dracula: Last Sanctuary (on hold)&&reading: even more study papers&&listening to: this and that, plus Musicovery&&TV favorites: (currently) Pushing Daisies, Chuck, Journeyman (cancelled! grrr...), Heroes&&all-time) 24, Stargate SG1, X-Files, Lost, House |

But, unless I scrolled too fast and missed it... --None of the great films of Billy Wilder (Double Indemnity, Stalag 17, Witness for the Prosecution, Some Like It Hot, The Apartment, Sunset Boulevard, The Lost Weekend) --Nothing from Martin Scorcese (Raging Bull, Taxi Driver, Goodfellas) --Virtually all of Hitchcock, except my favorite, Notorious. I would also add: The Graduate All About Eve Butch Cassidy & The Sundance Kid The DeerHunter Do The Right Thing The Philadelphia Story Breaker Morant Cinema Paradiso Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf? The Hustler Anatomy of a Murder It Happened One Night |

ShadowWalkerJourneyman![]() ![]() Posts : 997 Joined: 27 JUL 2005 Status : Offline | Hello There! It is so possible to come up with so many other excellent films that it is almost pointless. Maybe the list should be increased to the 1000 best films of all time. Besides american films there are many foreign ones that are not listed and which can stand up to the very best that Hollywood ever produced. One that I can add right now is one that not only impressed Hitchcock himself, but that he still could not duplicate in its intensity of suspense and tension. The movie is The Wages of Fear, not the cut down one but the full 155 minutes one! |

| Deleted User | It's only pointless if you assume that we're trying to make a global list of the 100 best films of all time. We're not... or at least--as the starter of this thread--I was not. I was attempting to create MY top 100 (and as some have mentioned, such a list is always a moving target). So those that said "this should be on that list" and "you listed that?", I say "make your own list.". ;^) Speck |
