The award (might/should) go to....
The main name or film listed is for who I think will win, the name or film in brackets indicates who I would like to win. If they are one in the same, there are no brackets. You know the score.
Actor: Philip Seymour Hoffman Actor, supporting: Jake Gyllenhaal (Matt Dillon) Actress: Reese Witherspoon (if Keira Knightley wins I will.... be most displeased.) Actress, supporting: Michelle Williams (Rachel Weisz) Animated: Wallace and Gromit Art Direction: Memoirs of a Geisha Cinematography: Brokeback Mountain Costume: Memoirs of a Geisha Directing: Brokeback Mountain (Munich) etc.
(Now knowing the Academy Awards results: )
Dom- Good work! You got it right for many of the major awards- far better than what I would have guessed! Particularly impressive were your Hoffman, Rachel Weisz & Reese Witherspoon picks.

The future ain't what it used to be!

[spoiler midtext]Black muggers capable of erudite comment on society, a racist cop capable of astounding bravery on behalf of a black woman, a right-on white cop who ends up shooting an "innocent" black guy, etc. I think that was the whole point of the film. To those people who think nothing has changed from the 60s/70s it was saying: it might look like all the same attitudes are there, but they are more complex now. To those people who think everything is alright now it was saying: actually the stereotypes are still there, they've just learned how to speak a different language. Maybe it was too subtle for ya, Mark!
I also thought the acting and the directorial storytelling were more convincing and accomplished than Brokeback Mountain (especially as it's hard to play a stereotype and give it depth of character, which I think the actors did).
Still, my favourite film of the year is The Beat that My Heart Skipped.

Come on now. Crash was so heavy-handed I felt my intelligence getting insulted as I watched. I appreciated how they tried to flip things around, but once you got the trick you could predict how things would end up with all the characters. As for the performances, they were a mixed bag, whereas Heath Ledger and Jake Gyllenhall put on the performances of their careers.

OK, Crash may have been predictable in some ways, but are you telling me Brokeback Mountain wasn't?

Well, Gyllenhall was very good in Donnie Darko and October Sky. Also, I think Ledger's performance was pretty clearly one of the 3 or 4 best of the year, regardless of what he's done in the past.

What an insult for anybody who has ever sat down and tried to compose a melody with lyrics. The Emporer truly had no clothes with this pick!
I was able to see the talent that Eminem had with his win in 2002, but this stuff is just.......

That was indeed horrendous. Perhaps even worse was how many critics the next day praised that horrible performance.
Even more surprising is how Jon Stewart is being lambasted left and right due to his "failure" as a "humourless" host by so many critics out there, when any rational person knows that his performance was more fresh, witty, off-the-cuff and risque than any host has been in years if you like him, and his performance was serviceable if you don't. All this talk about how awful he was is insanity. I guess he did start out a little rough but his improvisational commentary during the rest of the evening was gold.
It didn't help that Hollywood can't take a joke when they're busy patting themselves on the back. Just like he does with his show, his humour comes from pointing out hypocrisy and pomposity and most of the audience couldn't handle the idea of laughing at themselves. It's a good thing Sean Penn wasn't there. He probably would have rushed the stage and killed him.

Ya know I really dont watch the Oscars, didnt even realize it was on, went to watch "esparate Housewives" and "Greys Anatomy" and saw they were on, so I just kind of picked up a book I was reading and had it on, then all of a sudden heard this song. HAHAHAHA! What a joke I laughed in disgust, "Its hard out here for a Pimp" Gimme a break, I know I sound lika an old crab, but I hate Hollywood and all the phony crap the Oscars involve, And then when they get out there with all thier crap about thier craft I just wanna puke. [smiley=eww.gif] And then you got some piece of crap garbage "Its hard out here for a Pimp" win this "coveted" award and Im supposed to take it seriously? : Pfffffftt.
Well that felt good, Ill get off my soap box now, [smiley=soapbox.gif] I dont know why I hate the Oscars and all it represents but I get this way every year when it comes on. [smiley=shrug.gif]
maybe I was a nominee in another life and never got the award, hence the psychological issues with crappy Oscar.

Status : Online | I'm SO SICK of hearing songs about being a PIMP. How many of these guys do you actually think were/are really pimps? My guess is ZERO!! What other profession that you know of has every member whining about being something other than what they are?
"Hello. My name is Dr. So-and-so and I'll be managing your care. I think it's only fair to tell you that although I'm more than qualified for the position, my true calling in in life is to prowl the streets at night in a purple suit, sell women for sex, and beat the crap out of them if they don't give me my damn money. Ok, now, how are you doing today?"
Is being a pimp supposed to be some kind of step up from being a rap artist? Can't they just be happy that someone signed their happy ass to a record label instead of bitching about the ups and downs of managing a group of whores? Is their real life so boring that they can't squeak out a song about it?
And while I'm at it, "BABY MAMA" and "RAMA" rhyme. WE EFFING GET IT....MOVE ON AND FIND MORE WORDS THAT RHYME [s]you stupid sh!tfaced douchebags[/s]
My name is Bethany and I'm the daughter of Gamergal/Michelle.

Come on, tell us how you really feel
I can kind of forgive this "song" being about a pimp since it's from a movie that was about being a pimp.
That being said, the "song" sucked major ass and I couldn't believe anyone would actually vote for it.

The thing is, I like rap music! I just can't stand the lack of imagination that goes into so many of the songs. And the subject of pimps is a long running source of the songs, which is ridiculous! (And in the interest of my blood pressure, I'll not get into the second most annoying subject of rap music)

I mean, I sort of know what pimps are...black guys who dress like that wolf from the "roopy" cartoons and go around saying "Wiz mah bichiz?". But what do they do?

Status : Offline | The only part of the Oscars I saw this year is the part I like best: the montage showing all the movie people who died within the past year. It's a nice touch and I like to see who gets the most applause. Even that sucked this year.
First, nobody big died. Chris Penn got the most screentime and applause. Not quite in the same league as prior years' ovation-getters Marlon Brando and Gregory Peck is he? Such a shame. He was never able to build on the momentum that he had going for him from his scene-stealing, award-worthy performance as the hick friend in Footloose. The only thing he did after that was get fat.
All around, just a lackluster group. Most of this year's people I didn't even recognize. It seemed they had to stretch it and stick in bunch of editors and bandleaders as filler. Oh well, there's always next year.
And no Don Knotts. What's with that? You include the maniac from the subway train in Ghost but not Barney Fife. What the hell did he do to piss Hollywood off? Vote Republican?
|
| 10 MAR 2006 at 4:39am |
| Deleted User | Don Knotts died too late, me thinks, otherwise he would have had some coverage.
For me, the best part of the Oscars are when it's over. I really don't pay that much attention to industry driven awards programs.

They are a pretty awful rap group, but the movie was great and I think you'd have a better appreciation for the song if you saw it. I really appreciated that they didn't give Best Song to the usual tired, melancholy, snooze-inducing crap. Celine Dion and her ilk can go straight to hell.

A better appreciation for a 'song' that consists of rapcrap interrupted periodically by the same line (which is essentially the title) and only line that seems to involve singing? I can only imagine the sleepless nights that went into coming up with the 'melody' and the lyrics.
I understand that you may not want the award to go to 'the usual tired, melancholy, snooze-inducing crap' , but IMO anything, even the opposite of a tired, melancholic, snooze-inducing song that had lyrics and a tune would have been better than that sorry excuse for artistry.
