yes, but...
is an old adventure thread still an adventure thread if it's not being read? [smiley=devil_smiley_grintail.gif]

There must be some upper echelon of collecting I don't know about if this is for real. First of all, I don't know of any great demand for the game in the first place and even if there is, I can't imagine that there are hoards of well-heeled Vic20 owners ready to lay down this kind of money. After all the Vic20 had very limited success in the marketplace to begin with! I'm particulary suspicious when someone with zero feedback is making the more recent bids. None of this makes any sense.

The future ain't what it used to be!

No, I gave up on that because the bids were always really high. I settled for a just a CD version.
When it comes to getting these old favorites, it can be very hard. I'm just happy to get a CD in mint condition.

Thanks Scout. This is just unbelievable. Makes me feel better about what I've paid for some of the more expensive PC collectibles. I guess I have to accept that there are a group of people out there that are legimately paying these prices. But why? None of this has the makings of a good investment for the future. PCs are going to be around for a long time, including some degree of backward compatibility. (IMHO, the majority of adventure game collectors want to play the games.) But working Commodores are increasingly few and far between!
What is more important is the fact that those cassette tapes are upwards of 15-20 years old. Anybody seen what happens to old cassette tapes: they warp, they crack, the tape breaks. In fact, the sellers of the games in question make a point of not guaranteeing the quality of the tape. At some point, you won't be able to load the game even if your Commodore still works. If you copy the tape (which is a smart idea just so you can play it) then the copy is not going to be worth >=$3000! Not to mention the fact that I remember what a pain it was to load games from cassette to the first Apple II computer.
The problem with wear, aging and compatibility is the reason why my cut-off for collecting is circa 1992-3 since I see no benefit in owning most floppy disk-based games. I am interested in the game if it came on a later CD version.

The future ain't what it used to be!

Hey that's cool. I had that game when it first came out and someone stole it off my computer desk before I finished it. I just got a copy of it at Ebay as well and played it through all the way and I still have it. LOL

I won a copy of "The Neverhood" over the summer in an E-Bay auction. I was quite proud ! ! I don't know who I got Secrets of Luxor from but it was from Ebay and the guy I bought from said he had 6 copies of it. He also had a lot of other games and I think I bought some of them too.

| Deleted User | jalex: if it is the same guy that I bought mine from, he used to work for one of the development companies that made SotL. When I got mine last year, he still had 13 unopened copies left. I spent $13 with the shipping for mine. Then I turned around and traded it for a copy of The Neverhood. Of the two, Neverhood was by far the better game.

I have Neverhood too and I didn't like it as well. I think it was just me though because I just don't like the kind of story that Neverhood had. I am kind of a dark and Sifi freek with not so much on fairytale stories even though I probably have most of the fairytale games too.
