Hey, I didn't know that game... sounds interesting...
Where did you find it? I couldn't notice it in the IF Archive

Back to the thread, I'm playing "Pentari: First Light" right now.

I've played zork though once, but it's been awhile so I thought I'd check it out again.  It's still fun, and brings back memories.

I just picked up Demon's Tomb, The Awakening (all boxed and complete) at a thrift store for 5.00,  and have started it.  Really enjoying it. It lets you switch to menu or text, has little graphic files you can call up in certain locations.

I also found Transylvania by Polarware, the "enhanced verision" whatever that means.

Did you notice any difference with the standard version?

Couldn't say as I've never seen the standard version, in fact hadn't even heard of Transylvania till I saw it in the thrift store.

I would recommend Demon's Tomb to anyone who wants a good text adventure. I haven't played any since the Zork trilogy and this is beginning to pique my interest again. I find taping the 4 sheets of blank white paper together and starting my map strangely satisfying after all the years of graphic gaming...

I have Pentari but have yet to take a peek. Even got the folio with the key, though the folio was ripped in the pocket.  :-/

If you like it, try the other two (it's a trilogy):
Transylvania 2: The Crimson Crown
Transylvania 3: Vanquish The Night

have Pentari but have yet to take a peek

If you liked Zork you'll be right at home in Pentari!

A lot of people feel the same way you do.  What do you like the most about Zork? And why?

Sorry, for being late with the answer.
I found it via BAF's guide to IF. The link there is taken from the archive.

Worked my way further down that list and played:

Beat the Devil - A nice little game, not too difficult. Didn't need any help this time The concept is about beating the 7 sins in order to get to the girl of your dreams as a "present" by the devil in person. The part about the sins is copied from a couple other games, but the approach is still genuine.

The Best Man - I played that a year ago, a little confusing and hard towards the end, you have to get a bomb off a train.

Being Andrew Plotkin - I didn't like the movie and wasn't too eager to play the game, but it's a clever hommage to Plotkin, one of the IF masters. There are few puzzles and the plot is straightly linear. Makes you smile throughout, nice writing.

I'm currently playing the First Light demo. I don't like it. For a demo to a commercial full game it is unpolished. There are mistakes in the first few lines of the description and further on. You are supposed to pay for that game and should have the best impression. I hope I don't get banned for my personal opinion!

Which is only based on subjective facts I made up.

Apparently I was too stupid to score yesterday. I judged the game very quickly and got the impression there is nothing more to do, even forgetting about the only command that made sense. I expected that I could ask one of the many people as well...ok, that was too rash, I admit. But imagine, today I scored and I could have done again and again and again. Because there is no flag implemented which prevents another scoring. I could do the same action endlessly (cool, I have more points now than you can get in the whole game, duh). Just wanted to let you know.
Why haven't you spell-checked and bug-tested the introduction? It could have been an even better game or demo.

You must have an old release of the demo.  I heartily encourage you to get Release 6 at http://www.malinche.net/pfl-demo.z8

You'll enjoy it quite a bit methinks.

Negative. It's the very version from your page.
And it's marked as Release 1.
Btw, your link gave me the same release (you could have modified it since two days ago). Are you sure that release 6 is linked with your page? Perhaps you confused it with the old version.

There's still Release 1 on your page and refered to by your link. There's still the bug of infinite scoring. At the only possible point to score in the demo.
What about Release 6?

That would be great!
Thanks. I PM'd you my address then realized you provided your e-mail. I'll go ahead and e-mail you too. And BTW, I think all the updates you send unsolicted are a great service. It's more like I've invested this game in my future instead of just buying a widget to stick on the shelf.

I am playing zork 1 right now and i wanted to say that this game is so great, i've heard a lot about this one before playing it, but I never thought the game would be so fun and so challenging. plus, it doesn't seem to have real "dead ends" although you might run out of oil for the lamp at the end. The game is only 100 K large but it's so tough and large with many rooms to explore and it's not linear, there are so many treasures to collect and even when I thought having collected all of them, there are still a few ones missings like the one hidden in the canary for example and it's even harder to bring some of them back to the treasure case. Zork is more than 20 years old but it is so fun to play, that's incredible, it is way better and longer than many current adventure games because instead of clicking everywhere you have to think to solve the problems!
I am so fond of interactive fiction now, I wasn't aware of that genre before playing those infocom games two years ago, in the 80's those games were very hard to find here in France and there was no internet so i just sticked to point and click adventure games. But now with Internet I can catch up and I am even more addicted to interactive fiction than to traditionnal adventure games

iI think many people here have played it but if anyone here hasn't, you don't know the jewel u missed !

Could be... or maybe a browser cache issue.  Everything I click on takes me to release 6...

You can certainly get Release 6 now by various means and I heartily encourage you to do so.

If it'll make things easier email me your mailing address and I'll send you an official demo disk.

Or heck, just call the Malinche office toll-free at 877-299-7999 and I'll take it down over the phone and send you the disk right away.

Zork certainly is a classic and I think it's timeless; I enjoy it as much today as I did the first time I played it on a TRS-80 Model III on display at a Radio Shack in Brooklyn! That was 22 years ago....when I was 12!

I won't spoil anything for you but there IS another light source you can find in the game.  Just be careful not to use it anywhere dangerous (subtle hint!)

yes, I've found the other light source. i've just finished the game yesterday with a few hints  :-[

there s one thing I would never have figured out by myself like u have to use a "treasure" in order to put out the rainbow. In my mind the treasure were not objects that I have to use, I stored them in the treasure case and that's all.
oh and there is one thing rather illogical with the black book, I would like to turn its pages but I didn't know that I have to use an item like the stiletto to do it, why can't anyone turn pages without any items like normal people
?
other than that the game is great, it's not too easy not too hard. It's not linear so novices can do lots of things in the first part without being stuck.

just finished Planetfall too, good game but I'm a little bit disappointed. I've heard so great reviews about it, but it's rather short and the puzzles are not very originals (insert cards, pushing buttons...) except for Floyd who is a great NPC and the puzzles related to him.

my grades: Zork 1: 17/20
                  Planetfall: 14/20

now I have to pick a new one, maybe a mystery like Witness, why not

Hi, LSALGA.
Have you played PFL or Demon's Tomb?
Although I'm a newbie in IF, I found both of them totally entertaining -especially PFL, very inmerssive game, great atmosphere-

hi Malia,

I'm a newbie too, i've just started Witness from infocom and i like it very much, I like real time events and characters who have an agenda, you really feel that you are there and only interactive fiction allows that.

I've heard of Pentari First Light and the game seems very good, I might buy it soon when I'll be done with Witness. Besides, the next game from Malinche, Greystone has also a very great plot, I like murder mysteries, it's great that people still believe in Interactive Fiction and are making commercial games with feelies like Infocom did, it's very couragous to do that ! Maybe IF could live like that as a low selling genre like independant european movies do in cinema, the goal isn't to sell as much as the big FPS games but to offer an alternative genre of game to a small community of players.

Freeware, as far as I know... At least, I downloaded it from this page
"
emon's Tomb" is divided into two parts. In the game's prologue, you're Professor Edward Lynton, trapped in an ancient tomb you've uncovered.  A big fire spreads all around him, and eventhough you know there's no escape, you have to do your best effort to save all the items you can from your research.
Then you play Lynton's son, Richard.
He becomes as obsessed with the tomb as his father, and he finally goes there to determine what happened...
One feature I found particulary troublesome was the time limit...
But it's worth the try (it's free
)

And as you, I'm eagerly waiting for Greystone.
