Deleted UserUnfortunately, only one of the ancient 7 Wonders of the World has survived to this day: The Pyramids of Giza. A large-scale project of updating this list has therefore been started. This time around the vote will be democratic, and everyone is invited to cast a vote. The vote ends at the end of 2006. The list of candidates has been narrowed down to 21 and the finalists are as follows:

- Acropolis, Athens, Greece
- Alhambra, Granada, Spain
- Angkor, Cambodia
- Chichen Itza, Yucatan, Mexico
- Christ Redeemer, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil
- Colosseum, Rome, Italy
- Easter Island Statues, Chile
- Eiffel Tower, Paris, France
- Great Wall, China
- Hagia Sophia, Istanbul, Turkey
- Kiyomizu Temple, Kyoto, Japan
- Kremlin / St. Basil, Moscow, Russia
- Machu Picchu, Peru
- Neuschwanstein Castle, Füssen, Germany
- Petra, Jordan
- Pyramids of Giza, Egypt
- Statue of Liberty, New York, USA
- Stonehenge, Amesbury, United Kingdom
- Sydney Opera House, Australia
- Taj Mahal, Agra, India
- Timbuktu, Mali

I have only visited three of these places but hope to see many more of them. If you ask me, surely some of the ones that it is a real wonder how they could ever be built should be on the final list. These include the Pyramids (for the 2nd time), the Great Wall of China and the Easter Island statues. It's really the ancient ones that still impress the most in my opinion, but maybe that's just due to a prejudicated view on the technical skill of old civilizations. There are limitations to what we can build today that in some ways did not exist back then. Limitations such as the market economy and democracy. Follies like Taj Mahal or Neuschwanstein kind of stand out because of their history. Others on the list served important functions and that's worth considering too I think... I find it very hard to nail it down to deserving winners on this list. Any suggestions?

Oh, and here's the website where you can vote: http://www.new7wonders.com

I'd like to vote but fear my opinion would be based on lack of personal experience.  So, until they start conducting tours I shall refrain from doing so.  Perhaps a series of documentaries is in order - educate the world's population about its heritage?

.

I'll vote for two ot three but The Great Pyramid of Giza is already one of The Seven Wonders of The Ancient World. Matter of fact, it is usually listed first in chronological order.

Of the others you listed above, I vote for Stonehenge and Easter Island. Those two landmarks are amazingly strange, inspiring and have led to much speculation about their true origins and meanings. The settings are also wonderful.

The only other one I feel belongs on the list is The Great Wall of China. It is truly astonishing.

Cheers,  Terry

I'd go with Machu Picchu (how in the nine hells did you build a city up there?), Angkor and... I'm not sure, perhaps the Easter Island statues or the Mexican one. The ones at the bottom of the list would be the Statue of Liberty and the Eiffel tower, in that order.

If memory serves, previous rounds of voting have been somewhat more based on country than on the actual merits (or perceived merits of the wonders. I guess we shall see how it will all turn out.

And here I was expecting that I would make the list. Always a bridesmaid and never a bride...

My picks for the New! Improved! Seven Wonders of the World: (no particular order)
  • Pyramids of Giza, Egypt (a given, as it is the only one in seven originals left. Too bad the Hanging Gardens of Babylon are no longer)
  • Great Wall, China
  • Easter Island Statues, Chile
  • Machu Picchu, Peru
  • Stonehenge, Amesbury, United Kingdom
  • Colosseum, Rome, Italy
  • [s]Pastor Disaster[/s] Acropolis, Athens, Greece

Please proofread your posts carefully to see if you any words out.

my picks:

Hmmm, I started to write them and realized they would be the exact same os Mark's so....ditto.

For 2 reasons, a) I think the more ancient ones should be wonders. Those that are simply good engineering(not wonderous)/good tourist attractions don't make it, popularity aside.
b) I don't know about 1/3 of those places.   :-[  Thus, they do not get a vote.

The candidate list is deficient.  It lacks a true wonder of the world:  The Fillmore, San Francisco, California.

Want to be awe-struck.  Take look at this show calendar for August 1967 at the Fillmore:
  • Aug. 1-6: Muddy Waters, Buffalo Springfield, Richie Havens.
  • Aug. 8-13: Electric Flag, with Moby Grape and Steve Miller Blues Band.
  • Aug. 15-17: Chuck Berry and Charles Lloyd Quartet, with Steve Miller Blues Band opening.
  • Aug. 18-19: Young Rascals and Charles Lloyd Quartet.
  • Aug. 20-21: Count Basie Orchestra with Charles Lloyd Quartet.
  • Aug. 22-27: Butterfield Blues Band and Cream.
  • Aug. 29-31: Cream, Electric Flag, Gary Burton.

Tell me, would you really rather spent $30 to sit on a crowded, smelly tour bus and get all sweaty walking up a bunch of steps just to see a pile of stones and buy some overpriced knick-knacks and postcards? 8-)

I notice they're just calling it the New 7 Wonders of the World - perhaps they should have two different votes, one for The 7 Wonders of the Ancient World and the other for Wonders of the Modern World?

Seems to me very odd to include places such as the Sydney Opera House, Statue of Liberty or the Eiffel Tower, anyway my vote would also be exactly the same as Mark's.

But what are the criteria for deciding?  How can we compare Eiffel Tower to Stonehenge?

That's the trouble, you can't!

I've always thought of the 7 Wonders of the World as places of mystery and awe, the feeling that you get when standing somewhere like the Colosseum or Stonehenge for example (pity about all the other bloody tourists though.
) Places like the Eiffel Tower just don't do it for me but it'll be interesting to find out which are eventually chosen.

I watched a movie recently where the Space Needle fell over.  Earthquakes I think.

* whispers *   [font=Serif]Looks like a modern version of Eiffel Tower anyway.
