Topic: My 2005. Gamewise. :)

Deleted UserWell... adventure-gamewise mostly. I tried one RPG this year (Divine Divinity) and it all came back to me: why I hate stats and potions and fighting and etcetera.

Recently released games:
Still Life. Found this one scary and a little too gruesome, also somewhat lacking in je-ne-sais-quoi. Run-of-the-mill puzzles. Good graphics. Promising story but bad ending, bad, bad ending! All in all a mediocre game.
Future Boy (modern commercial text adventure). A bit disappointing. Nice sound effects and voices. Nice pop-up pics. Far too linear. Bare bones, not enough flesh compared to most non-commercial text adventures.
RHEM 2. I've posted anough about it. Loved it.
Echo. Not really my cup of tea. Too edutainy, too linear.
Voyage. Great fun!
Martin Mystere.Didn't bother to finish it, sold it on ebay as fast as I could.
And then there were none. I guess most people know how I feel about it.

Older games:
Vampire Diaries. Ancient. Hard to find for a reasonable price, I was lucky. Very low-quality FMV, the kind of acting that makes you giggle a lot, not scary at all. And yet I really enjoyed it.

Louis Cat Orze. Adored it! Ancient and rarish. A short and easy murder mystery at Versailles. Definitely for children, but edutainment at its best, thanks to the wonderful voiceacting, the humor, and the lovely cartoony graphics.
Ghosts. Not really a game, but absorbing and wonderful entertainment.

Replayed:
The Neverhood. What can I say... wonderful.
Zork Grand Inquisitor. As much fun as it was the first time.
Duckman. I don't remember what made me play it again. Don't regret it though.
Mode. Not many people have played this older FMV game. It's an interactive movie hybrid with different paths and endings. I started it in 2004, finished it this year when I'd asked a few hints from the author, Jeff Green. Interesting game if you like FMV. Good acting for a change.

Still playing:
Myst V. Okay I guess. I'm hoping it will get better...
Beneath a steel sky. Okay so far.

Non-adventure and casual games (the ones worth mentioning):
Samorost 2. YES!
Hapland 1 and 2. YES! But very difficult.

So how was my 2005? I didn't play as many games as in previous years. The older games and replayed games win hands down.

Here's to a great new adventurous year!

How did you play Neverhood?  Is it XP compatible?    [smiley=hyper.gif]
My goal in life is to be as good of a person as  my dog already thinks I am.&&&&The measure of civility in a society is not how it treats those that are loved, but how it treats those that are hated.

Hope you don't mind if I hook onto your thread. I think it's fun to see what people played this past year.
Runaway - I had a lot of fun with this game. I'll be getting the sequel.
Dark Fall 2 – loved it almost as much as the first one.
Neverhood – exceptional entertainment
Chronomaster – yuck. Barely made it through even with a WT.
Drowned God – Loved everything but the 9 men morris puzzle.
Necronomicon – can't remember much about it. I guess that says it all.
Aura fate of the Ages – Good game. Can't wait for the sequel
Rama – Another classic for me.
Magnetic – I finished about 50% of the AI games. I don't really like playing against the computer.
Myst Exile – This was a replay. Still as great as it was the first time.
Puzz 3D Thomas Kinkaide – Not as good as the first 3.
Syberia 1 and 2 – The first was a replay, and then went into the second right after. Beautiful, sad story.
Legend of Lotus Spring – also immenently forgettable
Qin – Started in July, still haven't got into it
Sentinel – In much the same vein as Aura
Return to Mysterious Island – fun game, liked the novelty of all that inventory (though I really think that Chemicus had more)
The Arrangement – A good indie game
Mystery of the Mummy (Sherlock Holmes) - Glad to have played it
Bad Mojo – Fun, fun, fun, even with the arrow controls.
Alida – Has the distinction of my best game played this year.

Presently playing:
Beneath a steel Sky
Pandora’s Box GOTY
Martian Chronicles

Yes, it is.

@colpet
I think Betje intended for us to post our list.

But I can't remember everything...

new games
Fahrenheit/Indigo Prophecy - innovation of the year...see my review
The Moment of Silence - two sides of the metal in this one...see my review

Voyage - all-around great...see my review  :

played for the first time
Deathgate - some very clever puzzles in this one (picked it up for a Euro or something
)
Myst - liked it (slightly annoying because you have to do things twice)
Riven - really liked it
Exile - loved it

tested
Scratches Beta - you'll see...

non-adventure
Commandos 2 - stopped half-way through, but it was great to start this again
Fifa 2006 - the master of presentation and atmosphere with new PES-inspired controls and some old problems solved
Pro Evolution Soccer 5 - the gameplay master...truly the closest you can get to a soccer experience
Need for Speed: Most Wanted - hot pursuit in new clothing: most annoying characters in a game (ever?)
playing: Destination Treasure Island (done in two sittings, but it's nice), Syberia (ho-hum), Dracula: Last Sanctuary (on hold)&&reading: even more study papers&&listening to: this and that, plus Musicovery&&TV favorites: (currently) Pushing Daisies, Chuck, Journeyman (cancelled! grrr...), Heroes&&

You mean you don't keep an accurate list of exactly when you start and end a game ? Wow, you must be odd man out, or I'm really anal, which I think is closer to the truth  :-/.

Because Top5s are so much fun, here's my (adventure) games-played-in-2005 Top5:

5. Deathgate
4. Fahrenheit/Indigo Prophecy
3. Voyage
2. Riven
1. Exile

The Moment of Silence didn't quite make it, because of its flaws.
Exile may well be one of my favorite games of all time now.

Even with the training-worlds cop-out.  :

Edit: Scratches obviously doesn't count, because it's a 2006 game... (I defy my own logic, did you notice that?)

Games I played in 2005, in order of preference:

Enjoyable
 • Riven (replay) - No need for comment
 • Myst III: Exile (just sneaked in...started in 04 finished in 05) - I liked the overacting! Nice puzzles. Nice rewards.
 • RHEM - Knut, the puzzlemeister. Long may he reign
 • Dark Fall: The Journal - The atmosphere - just increased my dry-cleaning bill
 • Morpheus - It's not a fantastic I just had fun with this...it had something
 • Sentinel, Descendants in Time - nice puzzles, nice graphics...made up for crap story, plastic 3D characters
 • Zork Grand Inquisitor fun all the way

Less enjoyable but still pleasant
 • Myst IV: Revelation - Those killer puzzles and lack of rewards nearly spoiled it. The graphics saved it.
 • Alida - The only thing that prevented this being higher was the sameiness of the "find the info" puzzle type
 • Dark Fall 2: Lights Out - Just didn't have the same atmosphere as the first one. 3D characters and pointless dialogue tree - yeuck!
 • Aura - Pretty and some nice puzzles, but wooden characters and pixel hunting spoiled the fun
 • Timelapse - Should have scored higher but it just didn't grab me
 • Zork Nemesis - Let down by the navigation - too much spinning around having to brain damage my CPU to get it to run at a reasonable speed. Otherwise fun.
 • Omega Stone - Solid performance, but I want to kill that driver.
 • Reah - Incredibly cheesy acting and a non-sensical plot, but some of the puzzles were great fun.
 • Broken Sword: The Shadow of the Templars - George is annoying, but not bad considering my preference for 1st person.
 • Broken Sword 2: The Smoking Mirror - Ditto

Frustrating
 • Cydonia: Mission to Mars - Disk swapping anyone?

Disappointing
 • Amerzone - Pretty but too short and undemanding. Overhyped.

Disastrous
 • Ring: Legend of the Nibelungen - Don't get me started...!

And looking ahead...lined up for 2006, I have:
 • Finish RHEM 2
 • Journeyman Project 2: Buried in Time
 • Lighthouse: The Dark Being
 • Jewels of the Oracle

If I can get them working:
 • Secrets of the Luxor
 • URU
 • Traitor's Gate
 • Faust: Seven Games of the Soul

If I can get round to finishing them:
 • Schizm: Mysterious Journey
 • Grim Fandango

If I can get hold of it without selling my soul:
 • Obsidian

Also considering getting:
 • Scratches (once they've worked out UK distribution!)
 • Sanitarium
 • Bad Mojo Redux
 • Voyage (Journey to the Moon)
 • Gabriel Knight
 • Riddle of the Sphinx
 • Shivers
 • Myst V (maybe)

*

I love deadlines. I like the whooshing sound they make as they fly by.

I know I played more games than this but they are all the recent ones I can remember:

Sanitarium - Outstanding.
Largo Winch - Didn't like it at first, but this game grew on me and I really enjoyed it.
Jack Orlando - Rubbish
Beyond Good and Evil - Outstanding
Pandora Directive - Good, but not as good as UAKM
Vampire: Bloodline - Buggy, hard to get into as has a different system to other RPGs but quite entertaining. Finding the amount of evil I can do as a character was eye-opening as well.

I played so few adventure games (and so few games in general), so I thought I'd post, so no one feels that they can't post, as they have not played enough games!  Nowadays, I read more about games than get to play them.  Hopefully that will change, this year.

In 2005, I played all the rest of the games in the Myst series.  Aside from wanting to, very much, I sort of had to  - I mod over at the Ubisoft Myst IV/V Uru forums, thought it's really slow there now, not much to do.

I played Myst IV and Myst V.  Hmmm - I should go back and see if they both came out in 2005, and not 2004 and 2005

Myst IV - I liked it a lot, in terms of story and characters.  From a story and character perspective, I think it's the best of all the Myst series games.  Gameplay was fine.

Myst V - it's 3D and no realtime video characters, so if that bothers you,  in  a Myst game, I would not play it.  I also liked this game - as a somewhat wistful end to the whole series.  I also think it looks great.

The other game that I played was Still Life - the sequel to Post Mortem, a murder mystery set in present day Chicago, and also in Prague - 1929.  I liked this a lot - the characters, the story, the settings, the moody atmosphere, some of the puzzles.  It had a lovely noirish feel, at least some of the time.    It's a dialogue kind of game, so if that's not your thing, I would not play it.

Aside from games for my Palm (now  a Palm T/3) and Sims 2, which I'm now playing on the Nintendo DS - that's it!
Regards, mszv

2005 was great for me, because I discovered Zork Nemesis, RHEM and Obsidian. Unfortunately, I wasn't able to avoid the super-stinky 11th Hour, and Syberia violated the Geneva conventions by requiring me to pixel-hunt a blank screen; I lost a piece of my humanity that I will never get back.
