Aya already started the best-of-music thread, now it's time to make that best-new-movies-of-2005 list!
What were your favourites at cinemas this year?

This was my cinema year. I'll be adding some comments with these later:

Excellent!: (5/5)

1. Serenity
2. Me and You and Everyone We Know

Very Good: (4,5/5)

3. Sideways
4. The Constant Gardener
5. Wallace & Gromit in Curse of the Were-Rabbit
6. The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy

Good: (4/5)

7. Habana Blues
8. Corpse Bride
9. L'Enfant
10. Sin City
11. Saw
12. The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou
13. Private
14. Million Dollar Baby
15. Garden State

ok: (3/5)

16. Sophie Scholl - Die Letzten Tage
17. Robots
18. Le Temps Qui Reste
19. The Edukators / Die Fetten Jahre Sind Vorbei
20. The Grudge
21. (Bombon) El Perro
22. Batman Begins
23. Team America: World Police

Disappointing: (2/5)

24. Alexander
25. Sabah
26. What the Bleep Do We Know?
27. La Vida Que Te Espera

Downright awful: (1/5)

28. Factotum
29. La Niña Santa

Stinker of the year: (0/5)

30. De Indringer

I'm using the cinema release dates of 2005 for Belgium, so there will probably be some movies in this list that were released prior to 2005 in other parts of the world. Belgian theaters are world famous for late release dates.

Hm, looking at the list, seems like I've missed all mayor blockbusters this year! No War of the Worlds, No Star Wars III, no Harry Potter IV, no King Kong, no Mr. & Mrs. Smith.
Alternative films rule!
Only blockbuster I'm really sorry for I missed is Burton's Charlie & the Chocolate Factory.

EDIT: seen Batman Begins in the mean while, so added it to the list.

My favorite movies of the year were Sin City and Batman Begins.

I also really liked Capote and Good Night and Good Luck, which are more "Academy Award Material" type movies.  I also saw a lot of good documentaries this year.  My favorites were Grizzly Man and Enron: Smartest Guys in the Room.

My favourites were Serenity (I don't get how anyone could be so stupid as to cancel the Firefly TV series) and Sin City, but King Kong is excellent as well. So's A History of Violence.

I'm rewatching the Firefly DVD set right now to set me up to see Serenity, and it's almost painful to do so in light of how great the series was right from episode one, thinking about how FOX let this go after a handful of episodes. I had hoped Serenity might be just the thing to get the series going, but the box office numbers show it didn't quite break even in earnings, earning a paltry 38 million dollars. I will be interested to hear how the DVD sales do, as that's an ever increasing portion of a movie's profit these days.

Anyway, ten favorite movies? I'm not sure I've seen ten movies total this year, let alone in the theater.

Batman Beyond was a great restart to a franchise in horrible shape. Liked The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe very much as well. Would have liked to see "Hitchhiker's", but the reviews scared me off, I'll have to rent it anyway. Star Wars was.....adequate. Entertaining enough. Finally got to see Anakin become the Man in Black. That was sufficient, even if it wasn't nearly as good as the original films.

I still haven't re-watched my DVD of Serenity, but my first impression is that it did't play out as well as the series. The opening sequence was killer though.

I enjoyed Sin City, but not enough to own it or even worry about seeing it again.

Wimli's post added a lot of *plonks* to my Netflix queue. There's a lot I haven't seen yet--thanks for the leads!

I'll come up with a nice list later... but, even though I'm missing several blockbusters, I think that my immediate Top 3 are:

3. Sin City
I don't think I ever liked a comic movie so much... heck, I don't like comic at all but this movie rocked my existence. Best visual style in years!

[size=16]2. Saw
Perfect, just perfect horror and genuinely shocking moments. Definitely one of the greatest debuts in recent memory!

[size=20]1. Oldboy
Can't praise this Korean movie enough. Nothing I ever read about it prepared me for this mindblowing flick. Great characters, an incredibly complex and involving script, and the story is extremely original to boot... dare I say the best revenge tale ever told!! Save a spot in your list if you havn't watched this.

(while it was technically made in 2003, it was distributed in English during 2005... unbelievable)

Based on people's relative raves (above) over Serenity, I rented it. Shut it off after, oh, 15 minutes, right about the time we are expected to believe that what appear to be idiots with junk strewn all over the place are supposed to be flying a high-tech, advanced space vessel. Somehow that worked for Harrison Ford in Starwars because that was, well, Starwars, but there was no Harrison Ford aboard the Serenity and it wasn't Starwars. ARg--g-g-g-g

I didn't find 2005 a big movie year for me. Did like movies like Flightplan and Derailed though. Right after watching Flightplan, my son-in-law rented a car to Jodie Foster- he said she looked rather skinny!  I would have rather he had rented to Jennifer!  :

Would it be okay if I listed ten movies I saw in a real theater in 2005? I have no comments (if you would like to know what I thought of any of them, just ask) and they are in no particular order of my like or dislike of them:
  • Alone in the Dark
  • Batman Begins
  • Charlie and the Chocolate Factory
  • King Kong
  • Ong-Bak: The Thai Warrior (made in 2003)
  • Red Eye
  • War of the Worlds
Gee...I know I saw more movies at a theater than these seven I've listed, but I just can't remember any others.

Please proofread your posts carefully to see if you any words out.

Tell me what you thought of War of the Worlds.  It's the only one on your list that I've seen too.

Caroline, I must say, I'm glad I saw War of the Worlds on the big screen. Tom Cruise expressed more vulnerability than I thought he was capable of. I believed him in his role as everyman, and Dakota Fanning reigns as the saucer-eyed (no pun intended) queen of ear-piercing screams and shrieks in show business today.

Tom has to keep the now-spoiled kids overnight or so in his role as a divorced dock worker, while pregnant-by-second-husband ex-wife goes to see her parents in Boston along with her more-wealthy-than-Tom second husband.

The dynamics of that family scenario are typical - Tom can't compete with the amenities the kids (Dakota and her older brother. He's 15, I think) now enjoy living with their Mother and Step-Dad and make rude comments to their Father, Tom.

Their rudeness evokes "demons" with three legs, and the "Evocation of the Demons" scenes are just incredible. Spielberg and crew made them look so real and menacing - which, of course, they were and very quickly on.

You follow Tom and the two kids trying to escape the "demons" throughout the movie, and it is sometimes very intense and frightening. There are lots of panic and out-of-control crowd scenes filmed very well.

I liked this movie even though there wasn't much of a story and enjoyed how realistic and extremely frightening most of the "demons" looked in relation to the earth and people they were destroying (in gnarly ways).

Too bad it had to end. [spoiler midtext](the goofy, "Happy Hollywood" way that it did)

War of the Worlds ended the way it did because that's how the story actually ends.  It's not like it was an original work.  My biggest problem with the movie was the teenage son character.  Awful character, straight out of a cookie-cutter and completely implausible.  Not particularly well acted, either.
amn near ruined the whole movie for me.

I love sciene fiction but I was disappointed in War of the Worlds.  I remember being terrified of the original - I was terrified at all the old sci-fi movies back then.  This remake held no terrors for me.  It irritated me no end that people would stand still and watch the ground break beneath their feet - dimbos - do't they watch the movies?

I actually HATED the Tom Cruise character.  It was difficult to care whether he survived or not, frankly. [spoiler midtext] I thought the best part was when he let his son go and hid in a cellar with a clearly deranged man and then had to murder him.

[spoiler midtext]I also thought the ending, where the mother's house was undamaged was too 'twee'.  They could at least have shown her place partially bombed and wrecked.  Instead I expected her to invite him in for a nice hot shower and a piece of cake.

The narrative effect was too similar to many of the original movies and jarred with the modern treatment of the main characters.

The special effects were okay.  The little girl was okay - once she stopped screaming.  God I almost stopped the movie at that point.  I thought if this is going to be how it is....  [smiley=hair_pull.gif]    The teenage boy's character was under-developed but yet again - another unlikeable character.

The ending, although following the original, came rather tamely didn't it.  I was glad it was over, also glad that I'd waited to hire the movie for $6 instead of wasting a small fortune at the cinema.

As far as this sort of movie goes, Independence Day is still streets ahead.

So we actually got Oldboy before you? Amazing!
It was released here in October 2004, otherwise it would certainly have ended up in my top 3 as well! Absolutely brilliant film idd! Plus, the Benelux distributor was also nice enough to release it on a kick-ass 3-disc dvd set, including a production diary of a whopping 208 minutes!
 8-) That's how I like my dvds.

I've also seen Batman Begins in the mean time. Was actually really disappointed with this one. Yes, Batman has gained a more darker edge, his character has been better developped than in any of the other movies and some of the action set pieces are cool, but that's as far as it goes. Batman's enemies are still as one-dimensional as ever before (especially Scarecrow), as are Batman's co-fighters, Katie Holmes is incredibly annoying, Christian Bale's ridiculous Batman-voice got on my nerves and the training of Bruce Wayne in the first part of the movie is much more interesting than the lame second half of the film. Then again, maybe it just had to be seen in theater instead of on dvd. For me, this Batman film is better than the Joel Schumacher embarrassments, but can't hold a candle to the Burton Batman films.

Seems like we're quiet the opposite.
I don't think I finished 10 adventure games this year, in fact didn't play a single 2005 release!  :-[ I did manage to squeeze in 238 movies though
(yes, I'm a movie nerd, I keep a list.

Hitchhiker's Guide is hilarious! You'll love it, as long as you're willing to look beyond the fact that it's different than either the novels or the radio plays. It does however do a bang-on job of transporting the Adams' absurd humor, wacky characters and crazy situations to the big screen. So, it may not be true to the book, it definitely is true to the Douglas Adams style and heart, being yet another succesful variation on the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy story.

Hm, more believable that a hairy Wookie creature who seemingly doesn't even have fingers can fly a high-tech spaceship on his own than the entire Serenity crew of which a few members have actual war experience?  :-/ Hm, maybe you should watch the entire film before passing judgement, hang in there for a bit longer, you'll love it.
Oh, and while you're at it, do rent the TV-series Firefly as well. Watch it too, then give the movie another chance and repeat the same process until you like it all.
Nope, I won't take no for an answer. Thou shall love and adore Firefly and Serenity, we fans accept nothing less.

I understand.  I fancied Rock Hudson considerably less when I found out about him.

I still Jennifer is a bit of an empty vessel.

Ong-Bak was really amazing.  I mean it's pretty much dreck in terms of the story and characters, but I honestly can't remember ever being as impressed with the action in a martial arts movie like I was with Ong-Bak.  Really unbelievable stuff, and the fact that it was all done without wires or special effects just made it that much more incredible.

I'll add this to my rental list. Sounds like a movie I'd want to see, but it could also end up not being my cup of tea. Totally different movie, but I didn't care at all about Hero, a movie everybody else was raving about for its cool and impressive fight scenes. From what you say, it looks like Ong-Bak should still be on the realistic side, making the fights that more impressive.

.

It just occurred to me that for the first time since I was a very little child, I didn't see a single film in a theater all last year. I did however watch several good, recent movies on the premium cable channels and pay-per-view... but none I can recall were actually released in 2005. So I guess those will all be coming on soon and it would seem that I have a lot of catching up to do.

Of the 2005 releases that I might still see in a theater, they would probably be the major blockbusters that rely on amazing visual effects, huge surround sound systems and a grand scale like King Kong. There are benefits to seeing that kind of flick the first time in a good theater and it is nice to occassionally let someone else pop the corn.

Cheers,  Terry

Ok lets start with the 5 stinkers of the year.

5. Stealth   - Nearly saved from stinker hood by Jessia Biel, but this was just too dreadful for the totty vote to save it. AI controlled plane get hit by lightning and "Number Five is alive" mayhem insues. Watching this made me want a lighning strike all of my own.

4. Ocean's Twelve - Take one excellent remake, bring back all the same stars leave out the semblemce of plot or characterisations. Get the stars to just pretend to be themselves, give your lead man a backseat role ,even thought the movie is named after him, Have the plot go worldwide just because we are big stars who want a holiday and bake for 2 hours. Better be a file in that cake to get me out of this clunker. >

3. Be Cool - Starting to notice a trend. Take one successful movie, make a sequel, but hell people will come anyway so why bother with a script or a decent idea. Get Shorty was a fun well made movie Be Cool couldn't decide if it was a comedy or a musical :
. It has so much product placement all over the place that this was a 2 hour advertisement starring John Travolta. The Rock was the only decent thing in it. Truely dreadful.

2. Revolver - Oh my god my brain hurts. What the hell was this supposed to be. Lock stock and Snatch were decent films, but Guy Ritchie has disappeared up his own pretentious arse with this confusing mess of a movie.

1. Fantastic Four - Without a doubt the worst movie of the year. Not even Jessica Alba can save this turkey. Superhero movies have come a long way with the Spiderman series, Xmen and the Latest Batman that this movie feels like it is a retro 80's movie. Julian Macmahon hams it up big style in a baddie that never really threatens. Mr Fantastic is a whiney wimp even after he gets his powers, The thing mopes about, the leading lady spends half the film invisible and  Chris Evans is the only one that looked like he was having fun making this movie. Summer Blockbuster made by committee.

There was a long list of disappointing movies this year that could so easily have been present in this list from Star Wars Episode III which nearly got nominated just for the "NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO" line to Mr and Mrs Smith (Snore) and "Harry Potter and the worst one yet" or whatever it was called.

BEST FILMS OF 2005

15. The Constant Gardener

based on a bestselling novel by John Le Carré, is an exciting mix of romance and spy thriller. Ralph Fiennes stars as Justin Quayle, a low-level British diplomat who has always gone about his work very quietly, not causing any problems. But after his radical wife, Tessa (Rachel Weisz), is killed, he becomes determined to find out why, thrusting himself into the middle of a very dangerous conspiracy.

Following up City of God was never going to be easy, but with this smart and gritty suspense film he has done it again. Great performances from Fiennes and Weiss in what can occassionally be a brutal film. Part political thriller part love story this is a fantastic movie. (occassionaly a tad preachy and you might want to join amnest international after watching it)

14. Thumbsucker

It's not easy growing up, no matter what age you are...

Justin Cobb (LOU PUCCI) still sucks his thumb at 17. He wants to stop and knows that his thumbsucking is disrupting his family, his love life and his identity. The only thing that changes his behavior is hypnosis therapy administered by his "guru" orthodontist. But while Justin felt this would solve all his problems and he would finally be "normal," his troubles were really just beginning. Thumbsucking was only a symptom of a deep-seated fear: that he and his father aren't good enough for his mother, and that she would leave them. Thumbsucking was the only way to soothe this fear. Once that is gone Justin spirals into manic behavior, is diagnosed with ADHD and put on Ritalin, which becomes a substitute for his thumb. When the high of the prescription drugs and a newfound success at school crash, Justin turns to pot and sex to replace his thumb.

Quirky coming of age movie with a first time director and some big name stars. Nice cameos from Keannu Reeves and Vince Vaughan.  A smart funny movie that is this years Napolean Dynamite.

13. Lord of War

Based on actual events, this black comedy/drama stars Nicholas Cage as international arms smuggler Uri Orlov.

Not without it's faults I put this on her for the absolutly spectacular opening sequence where we track a bullet from an arms factory to an AK-47 in an African war, via crates and smugglers. Then, a trigger-click sends that bullet slamming into the skull of a young boy. It's a genuine shocker. Nicolas Cage is at the centre of this movie and everything rides on him. So it depends if you like Cage as an actor or not. In a preformance that has been compared to Ray Liotta in Goodfellows I thought he was very good in this.

12. Corpse Bride

Tim Burton continues to combine wholesome comedy and creepy horror with this tale of a mild-mannered Victorian gentleman, Victor (Johnny Depp), who accidentally marries a mysterious corpse bride (Helena Bonham-Carter) instead of his intended, Victoria (Emily Watson). Victor soon discovers that the Land of the Dead holds more fun than frights and begins to fall in love with his innocent bride.

Not as good as Nightmare before Christmas, but still a wonderous movie. I loved the way that the real world was dark and depressive, but the realm of the dead was a light and fun place to be. It was cool. Unlike any film I saw this year. Fantastic

11. Wallace and Gromit: Curse of the Were Rabbit

The cheese-loving Wallace (Peter Sallis) and his ever-faithful dog Gromit-the much-loved duo from Aardman's Oscar®-winning clay-animated "Wallace & Gromit" shorts-star in an all new comedy adventure, marking their first full-length feature film.

CHEEEEEEEESSSSE!!!! One of the funniest movies of recent times never mind this year. Has more laughter wit and character in those clay models than half the actors and movies in holywood. Make you look at vegetables in a whole new light.

10. The Woodsman

With a 12-year prison stretch reaching an end, convicted pedophile Walter (Kevin Bacon) faces an uncertain walk back into the free world in THE WOODSMAN.

Not the easiest film to watch and probably the bravest decision of Kevin Bacons career. He turns in an absolutly spellbinding performance as a monster who is trying to start afresh. Probably one of the most sensitive and intellegent movies of the year. the Scene where Bacon is in the mall watching the little girls will send shivers up your spine. Thankfully the movie neither makes Bacon a sympathetic character or glamourises his crimes it's an intense character study of someone trying to reestablish themselves back into society.

9. Batman Begins

prequel to the Batman films based on the DC Comics series, explaining how Bruce Wayne (Christian Bale)--the billionaire prince of Gotham whose parents were killed in an alleyway mugging--transformed into the crime-fighting superhero.

After the dreadful brightly cloured candy floss of the last two Batmans. it was refreshing o see it go back to it's roots. Nolan follows up the fantastic Memento and Insomnia with a dark gritty and more realistic superhero. Infintitly more enjoyable in the first half it slighlty loses it's way in the second half, but is still one of the better blockbuster movies of the year. Christian Bale gives the best portrayal of batman ever too bad he was stuck wit Katie Holmes as his love interest.
