Whats  everyones opinions on playing games on hand held devices?
Personally I have always enjoyed being imersed in my games with a big monitor
and big speakers. Now with the psp and other formats I just cant get used to
tiny graphics. even with the video ipods watching video on a 2.5 inch screen
just dosnt seem right. perhaps other people feel the same way and thats why
sales are slow.
Does adventure gaming have a future on small handheld game devices?  :-?

I've no interest in that kind of gaming. I don't play consoles either. I just recently had to upgrade my 'car' phone I bought in 1988 (it had a bigger handset than my in house phone
, and it came with a state of the art battery pack weighing only 4 lbs!). I just wanted a phone, but everything comes with a camera, text messaging and other doodads. I couldn't even get the new one to 'ring' normally (even though there were 20 or so choices, including a cat's meow  :-?).  I guess I'm just old fashioned.

I doubt it. These things seem more suited to light, superficial arcade-style diversions like Tetris to be played during short breaks or when travelling. In my opinion, adventure games should offer a deeper experience that requires more time and concentration than can be mustered during a typical bus ride or coffee break. Of course, there are plenty of light, easy "adventure" games coming to market these days that go against everything I just said.

SirDave should weigh in here.  He has a Pocket PC PDA (personal device assistant, Microsoft operating system), and plays adventure games on them.  There are some adventure games that you can play on the Pocket PC.

I love playing games on my PDA, in this case a Palm OS operating system device - currently it's a new Palm TX, as my beloved Palm Tungsten T3 finally died.  There's some cool games for it and finally (finally!) an adventure game for Palm OS devices - the first game in the Broken Sword series.  I got Broken Sword: Shadow of the Templars for the Palm OS, and I'm playing it and enjoying it a lot. For some reason I never played it on the PC, so it's new to me.  The way games work with a stylus is a lot like "point and click".  The screens on these new devices are very good, so you get a good gaming experience.  For those of you who have trouble using a very thin stylus for an extended period (I'm older, and I need something that is fatter - I also use fatter, ergonomically designed pens) - there are pen/stylus combinations that work well for me.

I can't report on gaming on the Nintendo DS, but when I get one (hopefully this month) I'll let you know about it.  The Nintento DS has both the traditional game controls for a handheld and also a stylus!  There are some actual adventure games for the Nintendo DS, such as Trace Memory and Phoenix Wright.  Both Trace Memory and Phoenix Wright were reviewed on adventure game sites - I think (should go check) they were both reviewed at Just Adventure.  I'm also interested in playing some simulation games on the Nintendos DS, such as Sims 2 and Animal Crossing.  Sims 2 for the Nintendo DS looks interesting.  Sure, it's a simulation game, but it's different from the PC version of the game, and there seems to be some adventurish discovery elements in it.  I'll quote from the Nintendo DS site description of the game Sims 2 "Exclusive story - Explore the wide-open world of The Sims 2 as you become the rich and powerful owner of your own hotel in Strangetown. Your ultimate goal is to uncover Strangetown's secrets while keeping the VIPs in your hotel happy."

For games for Palm OS devices, my favorite publisher is astraware - http://www.astraware.com .  I think that for some games they are the developer, and for some games (such as Village Sim, a great simulation game) - they just sell the game on their site.  Broken Sword: Shadow of the Templars was done by them.  It's a small company (really nice people, I met some of them at a Palm event), but I suspect that someone at that company must really like adventure games!

I'm going to a Game event today - G.A.M.E at Moscone Center in San Francisco.  For such an intermittent gamer as myself, we'll see how well I do at playing the free demos.  If I see anything interesting on portable gaming, I'll report on it.

I used to enjoy playing Snake on my old Nokia 3310.  I could never work out how that Bantomi game worked though...

Unfortunately that phone died a couple of months ago and now I've inherited my brother's phone (I don't know what it is, it's like my old one but with a colour screen).  The games on it are: True Crime, XIII, Prince of Persia, Return of the King, Nightmare Creatures and Worms.  I don't know how any of them work, but they all look a lot more complicated than Snake!  And I want to go and find Worms 2 on my PC now...

Anyway, to answer your question, no I don't think anyone will bother with adventure games on phones.  The screen is too small and the buttons are too fiddly.  I don't think many people would want to play adventures on hand-held games consoles, either.  Adventure games are made to be played on a nice big screen with a mouse, while you're sat in a nice comfy chair

I'll just use my phone for sending a text once a month or so...
...not to be confused with Keira Knightley

I think it's too early to say. Not enough people have actually tried them. Trace Memory and Phoenix Wright seem to be getting good feedback. I think the DS having a touchscreen puts it ahead of the PSP and Gameboy as far as adventure gaming.

One thing is sure - you won't get the same effect out of playing something on a little bitty screen that you will with playing it on a large screen. But the handhelds are very portable, and that may mean the difference between finding time to play and not playing at all.

There is also the possibility of reaching a new audience among people who use a Pocket PC and Palm OS and are looking for something besides solitaire to play.

The think that's interesting about the Nintendo DS is that it has 2 screens, and the bottom one (someone correct me if I'm wrong)  that's the touch screen.  It will be interesting to see how the platform  works with adventure games.

I'm thinking about why I find playing games on my Palm (and, I'm hoping, the Nintendo DS) to be so enjoyable.  It's really given me a new appreciation for gaming.  It must have something to do with the portablity of the thing.  That, and the stylus.  I've played games on the Palm where I have to use the buttons (a racing game, for example), but the stylus works a lot better for me.   It's interesting - I'm not all that crazy about "point and click" controls on my PC, but I like the stylus so much on a portable device.

On, for those who don't play with these things - a stylus is a little pointer stick, with a pointed but blunt tip.  You control the device and a game by touching the stylus to areas of the screen.

I've never played games on my cell phone.  I'm not averse to it, but it's an older phone and battery life is just not that good.

Here's a really swell review of the Palm Broken Sword game
http://palmaddict.typepad.com/palmaddicts/2005/11/jans_right_brok.html

Here is something wasy cool, from the astraware site.
http://www.astraware.com/palm/featured/brokensword1/reviews?skucode=0211-000-0363
Click on the first link, and you'll see video footage of someone playing the Palm Broken Sword game.  It's a tiny bit blurry - when you see it on the device itself, in person, the video is clearer.  Still, you get the idea of how it plays.

One more thing on the Astraware Broken Sword site
http://www.astraware.com/all/default/brokensword1/?link=home_1_1
Look how nicely they describe what an adventure game is, and how to play it.

Oh - on what to play on the Palm - There have been games for the Palm since there was a Palm, not just solitaire.    Let's see - Palmgear lists 1737 games.  Some of these are repeats - more than one Sudoku game, Solitaire game, driving game, blast aliens game (very popular), etc. -  but you get the idea.  There are lots of games, and most (not all, but most) software for the Palm is "try before you buy".  Translations of arcade classics work really well, as do puzzle games such as Bejeweled.  There are even RPG games. I've got 16 games installed on my Palm right now - most are on the 1GB memory card.

As some of you know, adventure games on PDAs, specifically PocketPCs (& mobile PocketPCs on cellphones) is a big hobby of mine. PocketScumm is a port of ScummVM to the PocketPC and works beautifully. Some of the newer PocketPCs are VGA capable- you should see Sam 'N Max on the HP4705 for instance: beautifully vivid colors, generally similiar to the PSP screen.

My manual for PocketScumm started as just a few paragraphs 3 years ago and now covers the setup & installation of almost all the PocketScumm games. It is just passed 75,000 hits and parts of it are reprinted all over the world now.

http://www.pocketmatrix.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=8606

A lot of people don't realize how many adventure games can be played on a PocketPC PDA under ScummVM (PocketScumm). Just look at this list:

http://scummvm.sourceforge.net/compatibility.php

BTW re: Sony PSP: People have been talking about the port of ScummVM that allows you to play these games on the PSP. Unfortunately, Sony is out to totally prevent the use of emulators on the PSP by frequently issuing new firmware that seals up holes that emulators take advantage of to work. If you buy a newer PSP game, the new firmware comes with it and you have to install it if you want to be able to play that game. So, at the moment, if you want to play Scumm games on the PSP you have to stick with old firmware and you can't play any of the newer PSP games!

Also, as I've mentioned before, you can now get the Kheops games, Egyptian Prophecy & Return to Mysterious Island for the PocketPC, not to mention Atlantis II (Atlantis Redux), Gilbert Goodmate & Myst. Riven is due out soon.

I'm always surprised when people say that can't understand the attraction of AGs on PDAs and why would you want to play them that way at all. Well, I ordinarily play my AGs on laptops, but if you're on a trip and have to travel light, it's a heckuva lotta fun to play these things under those conditions. Plus, they're fun when you're waiting for anything- doctor's office, waiting for car to be fixed, you name it....

Here's Myst on the HP2215 (it looks a lot clearer than this in real life actually; my strength isn't photography  :
):

Sigh.  I'm still committed to my Palm, but everytime SirDave talks about all the nifty adventure games you can play on a PocketPC device, I always start to waver!

Deleted UserI used to play Game Boy and Game Gear during breaks but rarely at home, only in summer in the garden or when on a vacation but else...
Since my large TV set broke down last year and I only got a small TV-set I rarely watch any movies or TV at all at the moment. But I'm thinking of getting a good video projector to have a real huge view ^^

This is a real concern to me , i think maybe a laptop is about as portable as i want to go
but some real interesting responses here , thanks all.
