I just picked this one up and am in the process of grabbing the updates.  Played the demo.  Get it if you can - 660 Megs!  Quite a lengthy demo, but gives you a real good feel for the game.  Graphics were great.

I'll let you guys know how it goes...why do I feel a really long night coming up?

Ok, taking a break. finished the first part of the game.  I can't help but feel it's pretty redundant at the moment graphically.  The bad guys are spread out pretty well and less predictable than Doom3, but still the scenery is getting old.  I've just helicoptered in on the roof of a high rise now, so I'm hoping this will change.

One thing that REALLY surprises me is that I left the old location, helicoptered out and met with my team, then we are getting dropped on to this building - yet I never rearmed!  I finished the last section with 3 rounds left in one weapon, 0 in another, and a few dozen rounds in the last weapon.  ALL grenades have been used and armor is at 0.  This is what I have to start the next new location!

Of course as soon as we exit the chopper, my squad is immediately wiped out and I'm being shot at from multiple directions... I dunno, doesn't seem right.
ying within seconds (REPEATEDLY) at the start of a mission kind of sucks...hence my break at the moment. :-/

For heart-pounding action though, it's a great game.

This is one of the best fps I've played since FarCry (I personally found Dooms 3 boring and HL2 was ok except for some of needlessly extended levels).

The A.I. is very quick to adapt to the situation their faced with.  Co-ordinating attacks to flank you, retreating when needed or calling for back up; the gunplay is a blast.

The same thing happened to me here, lol.  Yes, you have to play tactically; that's the beauty of the game; you just can't go out guns blazing; conserve your ammo and shoot only when you can or a part of their body  that is exposed; slo-mo is a great advantage when you're clearly outmatched and outgunned.   BTW, trying throwing a grenade while in slo-mo and shoot it so the bad guys don't get the chance to retreat to a safer position.

Yes, this is one heck of a game!

Finished the game few weeks ago... It's a mix-up of HL2 and Doom 3. The "scary" elements are not really scary and seem like all over the place (just like the action parts in Fahrenheit). OK game, really short but fun to play

I just finished this.  Excellent game!
The scenery changed quite a bit between chapters:

- Docks & warehouses
- Office building
- Urban slums
- Research facility

I agree with jedicri, the AI was very good.  Lots of ducking for cover and flanking you if you aren't careful.

The ending and special effects were awesome and pretty creepy.  There were a few bugs for me:

- I couldn't quit the game, then play it again without rebooting my system!  If I tried to get into it again, nothing would happen when clicking on the icon for it. The process would start, but nothing happened.
- At one point I jumped up while riding the elevator and the game seemed to lose track of where the floor was.  I was walking on air about 4 feet up.  Consequently I couldn't get out of the elevator because I couldn't duck low enough and had to reload a previous game.

It's not a 'dumb' game.  For example, Call of Duty pretty much required killing every German in site with no other interaction needed with the environment (other than grabbing weapons).  This game has you trying to figure out alternate routes, rebooting servers, accessing computer terminals and listening to voice mails to learn more about the story and have it unfold.  In other words, a bit more thinking is required.

I have to disagree somewhat with Erik84, it wasn't a short game at all. I'd say it was medium length. It wasn't as big as Half-Life, but was at LEAST twice as big as Call of Duty 2 and Brothers in Arms.  Playing time was roughly 20 hours.

Hmmm, interesting. I usually rip through these pretty quick too. Maybe I took longer breaks than I thought... :

What difficulty were you on?  I was at normal. :-/

I'm playing this at the moment also. I can't say I've noticed this magnificently brilliant AI everyone raves about. It probably isnt as stupid as some, but it is still pretty basic I reckon. I'm playing on normal difficulty.. perhaps thats the problem.

As for scenery change.. I just got past knocking off the ATC and the scenery is pretty bland from one level to the next. Its an OK game, but... well... the scare factor is an absolute ZERO for me. I was far more creeped out by Doom 3. I also enjoyed HL2 a hell of a lot more so far. Perhaps playing computer games since I was 16 (am now 41) is starting to take its toll.

Since you are still playing, the AI is pretty basic early on. Certain other locations get a bit tricky if you don't watch your back.

Fair enough. I'm on "Sayunara Sucker" which I thought was a reasonable distance in, but I'll see how it goes. They do try and flank you sometimes, but its pretty predictable.

I beat the whole game last week.

The AI is very good compared to any other FPS.   However, overall the AI is still pretty bad.   Ie:  They will almost never stalk you thru a level.   Once or twice they might flank you from multiple paths.  But for the most part, they will simply come at you from one exact direction and they will not pursue you en masse.  Hence for 90% of the game you can simply bait & lure the enemy one or two at a time, retreat to repower your SlowMo, then repeat.  Much like in any other FPS.

I agree with the other poster that the part where you fly in in a helicopter and your so-called "team mates" die instantly whilst you are left to face dozens of enemies with almost no ammo was a very poorly-done part of the game.  In the section directly before that, you have to fight a couple of Heavy Armor guys (take a lot of ammo to take down) along with a gazillion soliders backing them up.   Hence it was highly unreasonable to expect players to have enough ammo to balance out the immediate onslaught of the next level.  That section of the helicopter dropping you off with no ammo was by far the hardest point in the game, and it's only in the mid-game.   A designer clearly dropped the ball on that one.

The enviroments are indeed extremely repetitive.  As are the enemies.

I found the story resolution/ending and final levels to be extremely weak and unsatisfying.

It is a short game, probably only 10 hours if you take your time.  Not exactly worth $60 CAD for it.  Good thing I got a deal and only paid $21.49 CAD. If I had paid more I'd feel scammed, but then again I'm somewhat stingy with getting a good value for my dollar so some gamers may not share that philosophy.

Having said all that, it's a fun game.  I'd give FEAR a 7/10.  By comparison, I found Doom 3 to be incredibly boring; I'd give Doom 3 a 4/10.

F.E.A.R. is a really really fun game.  They advertise it as scary and stuff, and the end is creepy, there are some parts in the beginning, but there is a middle part where nothing creepy really happeneds, it just going around avoiding the squads of baddies.
Still, the game looks amazing, and I love the "bullet time" effect.  It is really rewarding creeping up behind someone, turning on the slow-mo, and giving someone a roundhouse kick to the back of the head.
Or turning on slow-mo and jumping around a corner to deliver a precise shotgun blast to someones face.
Ahhh, there are moments in adventure games when you solve a really hard puzzle and you swell with pride.  Well, a well placed, slow-motion shotgun blast to someones face gives one a sence of pride, too.  Just a manlier pride.

Just finished the demo...it's fun!
I haven't played a shooter in ages (no, neither Doom 3 nor Half-Life 2...the latter being very surprising, because at one time, I didn't think I could survive without playing this...) , so I think the AI is pretty good. They won't move away from certain spots, but taking cover and shooting very precise is my impression. The beginning of the demo is the hardest part, actually. It's not running that smooth, either, so I guess I consider myself handicapped.

As soon as I had the sniper disintegration gun, it was a complete breeze, though. Well, in the demo you know that you can use it up. I guess it's not recommended to do that in the full game.

The slomo feature is a lot of fun, but of course, not new. I haven't played Max Payne 1 or 2 and not a single one of the Matrix games, which means it was the first time I ever used it!

I'm very much out of practice with shooters...the demo seemed pretty hard to me on normal.
Too bad I now caught the fever, a little bit...I'd really like to play this or HL2, for that matter...damn!!
I'd need a big upgrade first.
