Try the following test from BBC Body & Mind website.

http://www.bbc.co.uk/science/humanbody/mind/surveys/smiles/index.shtml

I got 15 out of 20.

Uh, wow.

Not that I'm Fred from Scooby Doo, but those have to be the worst lineup of teeth I have ever seen.  I think they were bad to distract from actually evaluating the smile...

I strive to be perfect like Funk...

I got 14 out of 20.

Then, I called my mom and thanked her for paying for my braces when I was a kid.

My name is Bethany and I'm the daughter of Gamergal/Michelle.

No. 13 struck me as a Frankenstein model.  I'm sure she was a she but my heavens, lots of big foreheads there and funny shaped chins.

You Americans are so obsessed with teeth!

I think that the exercise was harder because the subjects had been told to try and keep a straight face. So the ones that had been made to smile genuinely tried to get back to a straight face too quickly which made the smile look unnatural.

For me the best guide to a genuine smile was how it ended. A fake smile tends to end more abruptly than a real one. Because a fake smile is a voluntary muscle action, when you choose to stop the action you stop the smile. A real smile is an involuntary muscle action. In order to end it you have to either let it subside naturally or you have to make a conscious effort to bring it under control using a voluntary muscle action. Both of these lead to a more complex transition between smile and neutral face which a fake smile doesn't have.

end of lecture...sorry got carried away

I love generalizations  :

To me, if you're going to have a test/experiment where the main focal point for most people taking it is going to be the oral cavity area, one thing you'de probably want to take into account is that the models you use don't have a mouth full of randomly-sized corn kernels stuck to misshapen silly putty.

Aside from that, this test was interesting in that I figured I had everyone nailed and yet I missed 7.  Which means that 13/20 people here at work are just being nice to me and don't think I'm funny in the slightest bit!  I hope my fake smile is genuine...

Isn't it the worst (besides losing a limb in a traumatic way) when you say something you think is amusing or funny, and all you get is a forced smile that you just know is false?

Then again, it probably never happens to the comedians that run rampant in the JA+ Forums...

I request a "fake smile" Smiley be added!
