How would u like Gabriel Knight 4 to be?

If I could decide how GK4 would be like, I would like it to be produced in DVD format. Yes I think it is about time the gaming industry took this technological leap. Then I would use creal crystal DVD quality FMV graphics.

As I always say....nothing looks more real than the real thing. And I have never felt more connected to the characters of a game than I did in Gabriel Knight 2. It's just much easier to connect with a real human person than with a 3d or 2d representation of a person.

I think GK3 didn't do so good in sales cause of bad graphics, especially the people's bodies and faces. They didn't suit so well the dark nature of Gabriel Knight mysteries. I still consider it as one of the best adventures ever done but it could have been better in that aspect.

Back to my GK4 now....I would bring back Dean Erikson and Joane Takahashi in their roles. Dean is the perfect Gabriel. For those of u that think differently u could just take a picture of Gabriels face in GK1 and a picture of Dean Ericson. The similarities are striking.

I would also try to include a big Hollywood name in the cast. Maybe Al Pacino in the role of the main bad guy. Or Arnold Schwarzeneger in the role of a last schattenjager that Gabriel just learned about and is trying to locate!!! (just think how appropriate arnold's accent would be for a german schattenjagger
)

Other names coming to mind would be Bruce Wilis, Milla Jojovic, Matt Damon, Keanou Reaves and Joddie Foster. Anyway, a big hollywood name that could attract big audiences into adventure gaming. Black Dahlia had Dennis Hopper, Wing Commander had Mark Hammil, why can't Gabriel Knight get someone really famous?

Controls and gameplay, of course point and click and inventory based puzzles. But I would try to include the item scrolling with a press of a single button like in Longest Journey. It really made life easier for all adventurers I think.

About the story .... I don't think there is anybody on this world who can do this better than Jane Jensen so I think it would be stupid even to try to imagine something. It would not be even half the worth of what she normally produces. So I'll just leave that part.

Hmmm.. Don't think I'd care much for that. I'd find having big names too distracting, I'd end up thinking of them as actors rather than making that vital connection to the characters.

I think all in all I'd have to go for a typical TLG type interface, myself. I do agree on the DVD, but really just so that more of the game can be bundled in to keep it going for longer and provide a bigger world to explore. FMV type cut-scenes, high-quality, and the basic 2D world could and should include a 'swing-around' type 3D foreground and lighting. But that's enough eye candy. I say we use Dean for the voice this time.

Storyline, anyone?

Just the thought of Bruce Willis or Arnold as GK makes my skin crawl!

I think all the previous GK
have been graphically ugly but great in almost every other regard. Even an old 3 D FPS like Half-Life looks better than the 3 D in GK 3. And the first 2 GK
weren't exactly ahead of their time graphically. I think the most important thing with GK 4 (if there will be one) is to do Jane Jensens writing justice with some up to date graphics! If it's FMV or third person etc. is a secondary thing! But i do think the TLJ or Syberia style graphics and interface would be very suitable.

I didn't say Bruce Willis or Arnold should play Gabriel. No, I don't think anybody suits Gabriel as Dean Ericsson does.

But they could have secondary roles. Just imagine the kind of audience GK would attract with a name like that in the cast. I think the game could also be a masterpiece without one of these names, but I am thinking more in terms of sales and fuss around Gabriel Knight.

I agree about GK3 and GK1 having mediocre graphics but I think that GK2 had amazing graphics. I showed it once to a german girl and she said that the pictures are strikinlgy similar to reality (i.e. the house in the beginning is a typical bavarian house, the square in munich is exactly like it is e.t.c.). I think the sceneries used were great.

Personally, I'm not a big fan of FMV based games
(That X-files game was terrible, and GK2 is not my favorite of the three).

I think it might be an interesting experiment to build the game around the new version of the unreal engine, but in a traditional point 'n click style interface.

It's light years ahead of what was used in GK4, and some of the stuff it can do is amazing (especially with physics, character animation and light / shadows).

I really like ideas like being able to knock over a lamp in the game and have the room's lighting and shadows change and warp realistically around you in realtime, or see the (highly detailed) shadow of a guard returning to his post around a bend in the tunnel ahead of you, that kind of thing.

Take a  look at previews for Deus Ex 2, Thief 3 and Unreal 2 too see what I'm babbling about.

Anyhoo, just my opinion.

The great thing about the GK stories, is the fact that they are always so well written. So perhaps we worry too much about what it looks like, and should wonder what the story will be about. We've had Voodoo, werewolves and vampires.... so what next?

Having said that, the Nocturne engine (used for the Blair Witch games) would be a great way to do 2D and 3D together, and retain oodles of atmosphere.

I'd like to see something based on old celtic legends this time around (preferably in the Scottish Highlands without descending into the cliche of  having "Groundskeeper Willie" style characters and tiny ramshackle villages where bustling towns and cities actually exist!).

(Something about Alestair Crowley and why exactly he chose the shores of Loch Ness to build his home would be interesting).

Oh, and you're right about the Nocturne Engine, I think you could make a pretty good horror adventure game out of it with a bit of modification (I think it even has a setting to switch to point 'n click movement but It's been a while since I played it so I could be wrong).

I'd like something involving ghosts or other disembodied spirits. Scotland is an ancient country, lots of places are very haunted (as someone who's lived there all his life, I should know). Think we can write that into the Crowley idea somehow?

Hell, probably - the guy was into all kinds of nastyness
!

Could probably tie in some kind of "summoned evil spirits or demonic possession" type plot with that group he founded (The Golden Bough was it ?).

There's certainly enough "real world" history behind the area and Crowley's deeds to make an interesting story out of.

I wouldn't like to see another FMV Gabriel Knight, unless they do something about the terrible lack of interactivity that was evident in GK2.

My ideal GK4, let's see...  the interactivity, standard of puzzles, and voice acting of GK1, with lots of non-essential subplots like in GK3.  The stories have all been good, so I don't need to worry about that

I'd like to see something done with a ghosts theme. I would also like Dean Erickson's voice as I hated Tim Curry's :-[ I would like some FMV in between chapters. But anyway I would really just like there to BE a Gabriel Knight 4

Yes, I'm afraid poor old Tim Curry just doesn't do a very good American accent. The bloke from the second game seemed a lot more suitable to the part.

To nelie...

U r not the first person that has talked about non interactivity of GK2. But I don't get it what u people are looking for. So ok Gabriel could not run around the square of munich. If he did would this make the game more interactive? Or more importantly would it add anything to the story development?

I think the rational answer here is no. Please explain me what u mean with interactivity and what does it add in the whole atmosphere and in the whole story development.

If what u mean interactivity is being able to look to the sky, look on the floor and look around corners, I don't see how this makes the game more interesting apart from the fact that you would have to spend three-four times the time u would spend in another case to find clues, which is not such a good thing in my opinion.

And usually there is nothing of big interest on a ceiling or on a floor, and if there is the camera could turn there automatically without expecting from me to search every ceiling or floor inch.

I'm not against 3d games. But by comparing GK2 and GK3 I think although no 3 was really good also, it never reached the level of the second in terms of atmosphere and feeling.

I think that GK2 was interactive. I didn't see the character walk all the way while moving from one scene to the next, but is that what u call interactive? Because if it is personally I can do without it.

You have interactive confused with 3D, I think
.

By interactive, I mean that as a player I have the power to choose how I want to interact with the gameworld, and sometimes my choice has an influence on events in the gameworld.

In GK1 I could look at the musicians if I wanted to, or I could try to talk to them.  I could get Gabriels opinion on everything on the screen by looking at it, and I could also try to do things with the items I had looked at (and get Gabriel's response).  During the conversations I could choose to ask people about all sorts of non-relevant things if I wanted (such as their past), or I could choose to leave these things unsaid.  As a player I had the power to choose to do all of these things.

In GK2 I can only click on every hotspot on every screen and see what happens.  I select every option in the conversations I have because they are all relevant.  The only time I get to choose how I interact with something is when I use an inventory item on it.  This doesn't leave me with many options as a player.

Fewer interactions gives me less power as a player, gives me less opportunity to see different aspects of the player characters' personalities (because there is less for them to do and so less for them to respond to), makes the gameworld seem less 'real' (because there is less hidden potential - the gameworld will not respond in different ways to my choices because I don't have any choices), and reduces the variety of the puzzles.

Sorry to say that but I think you have misjudged GK2 as a game. Yes there were hotspots in GK2, but the same went for GK1. Hotspots is a main aspect of point & click style. U can't just click on anything u want, such a game would take ages to be made.

But even so I think in GK2 you could look at many things and get their description. If they were a bit less well that is maybe cause the two games were not released at the same time and most users seem to be bored by irrelevant to the story descriptions that take ages. I personally don't mind them. I loved all the descriptions and talks in Longest Journey and I wouldn't want to miss any of them. But I don't think they were missing from GK2 either.

I think syberia (though I don't know if u've played it) that was made in 2d is much less interactive than GK2. There u almost get no description about anything. But it is still a good game and the story is woven in a maestrical way.

I understand now what u mean by interactive but I totally disagree that GK2 was not. For example in the beginning u could look at almost everything inside and outside of the house and Gabriel would give u a description of it, and this continued to all the scenes of the game. And the conversations were rich and long in my opinion. And the FMV gave a real boost in the atmosphere. I think the actors did a great job also.

I rest my case...

3d gaming is overrated. same goes for 2d. In the next gabriel knight game, Gabe should be represented by a point on a line

I like hotspots in adventure games - without them I would have no opportunity to interact with the environment at all.  They are good!

My main point concerning interactivity is that the player was given a choice about how to interact in the gameworld in GK1.  In GK2 I don't have this choice - even a small choice like being able to 'look' at or 'interact' with the environment would be better than just having to click on everything and mutely see how the game decides I should interact with it.

A lack of interaction doesn't prevent a game from being entertaining, of course.  Gabriel Knight has an excellent story and that alone is enough to make it enjoyable.  But I believe it could have been a lot better if it gave the player the same depth of gameworld-interaction that GK1 gave.  Which it couldn't do, because it's an FMV game.

On an unrelated note, I found szcax's comment very funny.

Ghosts.

First of all, I also thought that szcax's post was really funny. Now I understand even more what u mean with interaction.

But I don't think it was because it was an FMV game. The graphic representation does not hinder any kind of control in my opinion. You could have the same graphics in GK3 and more icons like push, open, use e.t.c. as u had in GK1.

I think the choice of such controls was made because it made things much simpler. And I think one reason that adventure games are not so popular as other genres is their difficulty. I know many people who started adventuring and they stopped cause they were stuck for ages in some games.

I don't mind the simple controls, as long as it is point n click. I don't mind more complicated controls either (as long as they are also point n click). But u should point your complaint on the interface mostly and not in the graphics. For me the best interface is the one of longest journey.

The ability to scroll through your inventory items with the press of a single key was amazing. It would be even better if u could do it with the middle mouse button.

And by the way I also saw this GK4 note in sydney. Sounds good, right? I'm just wandering how Grace is going to fit back to the story again, with her leaving for Asia and all. Maybe Gabe is going to get himself another girlfriend? Or maybe he is going to cut his hair

Anyway...I guess we just have to wait and c....

Plot wise, I remember Jane Jensen saying on time in an interview about Gabriel Knight III that the next game (and hopefully the recent rumers are true about her pitching her..er..pitch to Sierra) would definantly involve ghosts, and take place most likely in Scotland.  I remember reading the interview I think on the Gabriel Knight fan site Sydney.  I think, but I definantly remember reading it.

That's about as likely as Gabe going off to join Grace and Emilio in the Shattenjagger training monsatry. It's technically possible, but very unlikely. Grace will no doubt be back, once she's managed to work out her feelings for Gabe. Remember, the characters are written very realistically (although sometimes the scripts they have...) so they'd react pretty much like we would. I doubt Gabe would be ready to give up and find someone else, be did give up on Madeline at the end of GK3, effectively showing his catharsis.

Damn, I'm a real geek

Man I don't care who Gabriel ends up with after all
as long as I get to see a GK4!

I think GK4 should be released next x-mas! There are so many adventures planned for the near future (syberia 2, post mortem, scherlock holmes, zehlengrom) that if GK is also one of them then we're definitely talking about the year of the adventure reinnescance!!!

Come on Jane, show the world what we've got!!!

Sorry for my excitement but I just got the news for syberia 2! This is just a great day!
