The Warriors is the first in the coming crop of A-List games based on old movie licenses, with games based on Jaws, From Russia With Love, Dirty Harry, The Godfather, Scarface and Taxi Driver also on the way in the near future. I can only hope that those others turn out half so fun and entertaining as The Warriors has.
Not only is it among the few movie to game conversions to actually produce a worthwhile title, but it's also the first old-school style brawler (Think Final Fight or Double Dragon.) of the 3D era to, in my opinion, really succeed at capturing the flavor of the best of the old arcade street brawlers. It has a ton of unlockables to further its replay value, most of them related to the arcade Rumble mode, which features a bunch of cool match types ranging from one on one to gang vs. gang brawls to more creative themed competitions, with a ton of unlockable characters and arenas. There's also a sweet surprise waiting for fans of old-school brawlers when you beat story mode.
Rather than simply stick to the story of the original film, The Warriors greatly expands upon it, beginning three months before the events of the movie to tell the story of how the Warriors rose to prominence among the gangs of NYC. It even features flashback levels that go back a year earlier to show the formation of the gang and how its core members all joined up.
The game is extremely violent, full of all the swearing, sexual references and sociopathic behavior one expects from Rockstar Games releases, it's also great fun. If you didn't like the GTA games or Manhunt you still might want to at least give this one a rental. I didn't like those games either and I love The Warriors. Highly reccomended.
Stubbs the Zombie in Rebel Without a Pulse (Exclusive to Xbox on the consoles but also coming to PC.) follows in the trend of the recent alien invasion game Destroy All Humans, this time putting you into the role of a shambling, rotting, brain craving zombie. When Punchbowlan eccentric millionaire's city of the future, is built on his grave, Stubbs rises to wreak havoc.
The game is short, repetitive and doesn't have much in the way of a story, but it's an insane amount of fun, with stubbs chowing down on skull, creating zombie armies, and using his anatomy as weaponry in a number of highly creative ways as he brings Punchbowl tumbling down for no real reason.
The game is set in the 1950's and really captures the flavor of the era with a lot of humorous little touches. The fact the game's based on the Halo engine becomes a little too obvious in some places, particularly when operating vehicles, but its never overly distracting.
If you're a huge fan of all things zombie, like me, I cannot reccomend buying this game highly enough. I forsee this being a title I'll replay time and again. Everyoned else should at least consider a rental, so long as they can handle the gruesome violence and mass zombie slaughter.
