Status : Online | I guess not. You don't like the game. Was it you who said, I quote, "I'm a graphics whore." ? I'm not quite sure, but I think other LucasArts games of that time had no better graphics than this one. At least, I never noticed.
I played the German version and had excellent voice acting. Once again - like in GK3 - the German version seems to be superior (if I take your word for it, that is). The story is not that original, but since you didn't play very much you might not really know it all.
I loved the game (see my thread in the review section), because it had quite a few puzzles and not that many dialogs to get stuck with - I find myself turned off by long dialog, lately. If it's not witty enough.

Conclusion: Don't play it.

If you don't like the way they look, I've heard ScummVM has filters that can improve their appearance somewhat. Still, I think The Dig is the LucasArts game that would benefit most from a remake using modern graphics and sound.
Voice and dialogue are serviceable, but I think LucasArts did better with comic dialogue.
I don't recall gaps in dialogue, but it's been a while since I played it. I believe it does play off the CD so how fast your CD spins up may affect this. Maybe a CD emulation program would get rid of the problem.
The story is not boring. I think you haven't played far enough into it for the story to kick in.
The music is great. The puzzles were fun - some of them anyway.
Is there any reason I should carry on playing this game? If you really can't stand the look of the game and can't get used to the way the dialogue works, then no. The graphics don't get better. In fact I thought they got more frustrating. There were things later in the game that I wanted a better look at, and the resolution just wasn't there.

The Dig had a very long development history. Got [re]written a couple of time, had lots of changes in the team, etc. After all that I'm still suprised at how good the game tuned out. It had an all together more serious undertone which wasn't present in any other LA adventure.

Me Four! Me Four! Me Four! Me Four! This was my first adventure game and I loved it. For me, nothing else has given me the same feeling I had playing this game. For it's time, I thought the cutscenes and music were great. I especially loved and was drawn in by the opening cutscene. The sphere tram, whatever you want to call it, was also great. I had no problems with the puzzles for my first adv. game. I was disappointed with the ending and would also love a sequel or an updated version.
@ Lucien - Didn't Spielberg have a hand in the Dig or was it Lucas. I thought I remember reading in the manual that one of them originally wanted to make the Dig into a movie. However, it would be to expensive so they made it a game instead.

What I am hoping it will deliver are some well-crafted puzzles and a high level of freedom & interactivity, which was the standard back in the mid-90s and, sadly, is no longer.

Good puzzles, but as I recall correctly, the game was rather linear (as in, solve puzzle in location A, door opens in location B). It has been a while since I played it though.

The graphics didn't bother me, although I do remember missing an inventory item because it was nearly invisible. It is fairly linear game, but there is some freedom of choice. I'd say give it a little more time, Chris. It may grow on you.

And I thought BS1 came out in 1997. My mistake.

Status : Online | The Dig had an extremely intriguing storyline. I remember playing the demo before it came out and being really excited. When I finally played it, it was decent, but a bit of a letdown. The graphics were subpar and the puzzles were really uneven. The plot was solid, but it didn't blow me away the way I thought it would after playing the demo.

But hey, chris.. if you don't like it, stop playing... it's all a personal thing... and isn't the point of any GAME to enjoy it?
