I don't like games or movies where the main charator fails to do what he or she set out to do. To me is makes the whole story seem poitless.  I like to see all the loose ends tied up and it leave a good feeling after it's ended. Anything else makes me think I waisted my time.  If a sequil is planned then it still needs a few loose ends tied up but can be left partly open with something leading to the next one.

it is really hard to say because if it fits to the story that main character fails then it's good and i like sad endings anyway.
of course i like "good" endings too..so my answer is both.

I don't care how it ends, as long as the result is satisfying. The ending in Still Life was a major disappointment.  Nothing was really resolved.

Unfortunatly, this truly does depend on the game. If the character survives, I'll usually be okay with it. If the character dies in some heroic way to accomplish the game's mission, it's rather more dramatic

I can't help it but I always have my chars dying in the end of all my stories. i just can't stand those non plus ultra happy ends. Of course it's also how the story goes. Can't have a happy happy joy joy game where the char just drop the hat at the end.

A successful game ending should be a happy one.

I miss my Bubba: 1986 - 2006.

I quite like to have alternative endings which depend on your actions in the game. I really enjoyed the various different endings in Riven and Myst III Exile. There was a "perfect" outcome, a good (but not perfect) outcome and a few bad outcomes.

With some games, such as Dark Fall 1, I really wanted there to be an alternative ending it would have fitted in really well.

I love deadlines. I like the whooshing sound they make as they fly by.

I guess you were.

I wasn't upset to see the end of that jerk Samuel, but there were too many loose ends left undone. It was never satisfactorily explained to me why he spent so much time gathering those keys after they'd been so carefully hidden to prevent the evil door being opened. And that was only one of the questions left unexplained. [smiley=raise_eyebrow.gif]

It's an axolotl.

I don't like it when the hero fails in the end. I just seems wrong.

I want to feel rewarded when I've finished a game, so I prefer a happy ending.

I agree that an alterrnate endings would satisfy everyone  and I would love that too but most games only have one.  Pandora Directive had 7 endings and I kept playing it over until I saw them all.

Deleted UserI don't care. It's the author who tells the story, not me. Sad, happy, whatever. As long as it's a *satisfying* ending to a good story. Unfortunately, satisfying endings are rare.

Yes but! And this is why many polls don't work for me, because they can't or often don't cover all reasonable options.

How about Syberia 1? She didn't complete her task at hand (get Hans' signature) and in fact ran off on the train, abandoning her job.

This is actually my one major peeve with that series--in the 2nd game, they simply don't mention the task she had.

But I loved the ending in the 1st one, even so.

Eh?

But what was her task really? Was it just getting Hans' signature for her boss or was it breaking ties with her old life, which she found unfulfilling but which she couldn't bring herself to give up. She started off after one goal, but achieved a more meaningful  one in the end. I would say that's a more interesting ending than just going through the motions of getting Hans' signature.

Deleted UserTo true. And that's why I liked it.

But it still doesn't quite qualify for the "accomplished tasks" thing, eh? I mean, given the stated objectives/commitments, this one breaks that mold.

Eh?

No, KamisoniX, you weren't the only one who liked the ending of Dark Mirror.   I found the story totally satisifying, partly because there were some loose ends and it made me think about the story after the story ended.

Mostly I like happy endings because I identify with whatever character I am controlling and want to be successful.  But a good story, well told, needs a good ending, whatever that is.

I think it comes close enough.
It's not like she failed her task. It was her decision to pursue a different goal.

Agreed. Just sayin', this kind of ending is not covered in the poll choices.

She did get the signature, she was surprised he signed the contract without reading it. She didn't take the signed contract to NY but she did get the signature.
