Why is it that a game which involves only marginal contact between ball and foot (American Football) steals the name football from a game in which the main method of moving the ball around is by contact with feet (English football forced to refer to itself as "soccer" when abroad)? I ask merely for information"
I wondered the exact same thing!!!! I asked my hubby and he said has no idea either! [smiley=shrug.gif]

I've taken note of your apathetic, bordering on contemptious, attitude towards cricket. Expect a knock on the door by the immigration authorities. No one can live in Australia and not LOVE cricket!!!
PS: Hopefully the immigration authorities find the right house this time.

I call it my time and I like that.

Status : Online | Has anyone watched the Ultimate Fighter, where mixed martial arts are used by the opponents? It's an interesting sport to see.
Mixed martial arts is actually my favorite sport, I have been watching the UFC for years. It's really exciting to me that the sport has legitimized itself and is finally getting the exposure it deserves. I'm a big boxing fan as well. To me, the 1-on-1 mano-y-mano format is just unbelivably enticing. I've been training brazilian jiu-jitsu for 4 years now and have competed in a few tournaments. The feeling of 1-on-1 physical competition is an unbelievable thrill, win or lose.
Aside from combat sports like MMA and boxing, I like most other sports, except the really awfully boring ones like golf and nascar. Baseball and football are the team sports I follow most closely, probably because my dad was a fan of them and so I grew up watching them.

Nope, none of it. But I'm sure I left something out.

Absolutely! Yes I know Australia is getting it's ass kicked, but it's the most exciting Ashes series that's been for a long....long time.
Cannot wait until the fifth test decider.
Cheers, Eternal

LOL!!! I'm picking up a negative vibe here... [smiley=rofl.gif] I pretty much hate sports too, for the most part. Our son plays soccer, and I love cheering him on, but I do not like the sport at all!! Now, with football season starting, I will be lonley... :'( My guys will be spending hours after church, watching football... Boring!!!!! I guess I can take up shopping!

I was abseiling down a cliff with a box of chocolates... No, I was rescuing a kitten from a tree.. No, I was kicking a live hand grenade out of a pram... ...erm... actually, I slipped at the bottom of the stairs, landed on the side of my foot and heard an almighty crack. At first I thought I had broken a floorboard, but no, it was my fifth metatarsal biting the dust
I'm rapidly becoming King of the Crutches (that doesn't sound quite as impressive as it ought) so I can probably get my own beers with out having to find out if my woman is tame or not.

| Deleted User | The only sport I still watch regularly (well, in winter that is), is speed-skating.
When I lived in England I sometimes watched cricket on the telly and in the park, and I know some Dutchmen who played it (one of them even presented me with a booklet with the official rules of the game, when he heard I was moving to England) , but if I'm still sceptical. I read this report (see link) and I think: "this is a conspiracy, there is no such sport". I challenge all readers from outside the Commonwealth of Nations to read this article and translate it into a proper language. I want to believe. Is there a site where the game is explained properly, in a way that afterwards you can understand what they are talking about in the link ? The said booklet only contains the same gibberish. :'( http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/cricket/counties/4207966.stm

You could have picked a better example. I watched the match in question and even I had to concentrate really hard to understand the report in the link. Basically, the two sides took it in turns to have a set number of balls bowled at their batsmen by the other side. Hampshire went first and scored lots. Warwickshire went second and tried to score more but failed - they lost.
Here are a couple of links explaining cricket (beware it takes a lot of explaining!)
Cricket made easy (hmm, not sure it wins the prize for accurate title) An explanation of cricket
If there is no such sport, then I have a better imagination than I thought!

I like to get down 'n' dirty, and I can't do that if I'm seated on my couch (unless I spill my bag of salt-free, carb-free, sugar-free, chemical-free dried tofu chips. Then I'm a mess).
I like to wallow (Southern dialect: "waller".
Please proofread your posts carefully to see if you any words out.

| Deleted User | Thanks, Snowtime. These will help, but you're right that it takes a lot of explaining. On a number of occasions I have asked cricket afficionados to explain it to me, but they tended to start arguing among themselves, or give conflicting explanations (I should have tried to get one on his own ). I'm glad the first site you mentioned says that the basic concept is the same as baseball. I once made the mistake to make the same comparison in front of people who played the game and was immediately threatened with being thrown out of the window (second floor). Anyway, with a print of one of these explanations I should at least be able to understand a bit more when watching it on the television (or even understand the scores in the papers).

Cricket is a game that the teams try to take all week to finish.
Mark I seriously doubt that even in America where just about anything is possible, that such food products as this actually exist :
my bag of salt-free, carb-free, sugar-free, chemical-free dried tofu chips and if they did, why on earth would anyone eat them, they must taste like rubber hot water bottles.
