Hi, many of you talked about a game (of a series of them) called "Magnetic Scrolls". Sorry, I neither played nor read about them. Are they good? Which text parser do they use?

Magnetic Scrolls is a game developer - or was. They had their own parser. Some games made by them are "Guild of Thieves", "The Pawn", "Fish!" and "Jinxter". I hope I haven't mixed up any of them with Level 9. They are very good pieces of IF, you should check them out. I have played just a few of them for a very short time, but I will play more of them...sometime.

Why? Are you reffering to the title?

i was just getting my arsenal ready actually! yeah the topic was really misleading

Rrautassi Magnetic Scrolls is among the 3 top txt adv creators ever, along with Level 9 and Infocom (being my 2nd best fav after L9)... the advs they released are:
The Pawn (great starting point)
The Guild Of Thieves (my personal fav and really hard)
Fish!
Jinxter
Corruption
Myth
Wonderland

it's weird that you don't know MS, being a txt advs fan.. you should definately try them ALL out... you can start with The Pawn and then move on to GoT and Fish (if you think you're strong enough!
)... and then with the rest! (although Myth might disappoint you if you play it last cause it was very small and easy)... you can get info, screenshots, manuals etc HERE and dload some of the advs at The Underdogs (missing Fish and Myth)... if you're a geforce owner then don't dload from udogs but visit This Page to get compatible interpreters (and also Fish and Myth)... but in the end you should skip all that and get the best versions....... the Amiga versions

I am a relatively new fan (although enthusiatic) of IF. I am also too concentrated in amateur and Infocom games. You now, when you get accustomized to certain type of interface it gets hard changing to another. Nevertheless, I am going to take a look to other developers. I must admit that the parser of Gateway, for example, has impressed me, even though the game remains in my to-be-played list yet.

Ok, I take your suggestion. Fish! seems also interesting.... !Your character seems to be.... a goldfish!!!!
Wooooh, maybe I should check this first!!!

i say you start playing Level 9 ASAP! their advs are:
Jewels Of Darkness (trilogy containing Colossal Adventure (extended version of the original Adventure), Adventure Quest, Dungeon Adventure)
Silicon Dreams (sci-fi trilogy containing Snowball, Return To Eden, Worm In Paradise)
Gnome Ranger
Ingrid's Back (G.R.II - The Best!)
Time & Magik (trilogy containing Lords Of Time, Red Moon, Price Of Magik - The Best II!)
Knight Orc
Scapeghost
Lancelot

i can't suggest where to start here! Lancelot is probably the easiest... maybe start from the two Bests! and of course once again, Underdogs is your friend (and as always Amiga versions are the ones to hunt down!)

mmm, are they hard? Interesting....

a lot of confidence i see! good... that's very good... try The Guild Of Thieves then!
Corruption was also very hard... i didn't much like it though but only because the story's not my cup of tea (and the right place-right time thing didn't help either >
)... but if you like real-life intrigues with lawers and stuff then you'll probably like it

I downloaded both Wonderland (no one sells this, period, so I feel relatively guilt free) and the Magnetic interpreter.  Now, I haven't a clue what to do with them, or if they will even work on WinXP.  Winfrotz was so easy to work with, I tried different things with Magnetic, but I suspect it's just not XP compatible (When time allows I'm going to dust off my pentium 90 with win95/dos and play with making it work...as well as my accumulating DOS game collection)

the magnetic interpreter works fine with me (XP)... don't know what you might be doing wrong... the original wonderland used the new interpreter though which doesn't have problems with GeForce cards... so you could also try the standalone version from Udogs

Concerning Wonderland, I wasn't sure where to put the files, if that makes sense.  The onscreen instruction was pertaining to installation, and the .exe didn't work and I didn't know how to otherwise open it with the interpreter. Does this make any sense to anyone who has tried this game?

i was wondering what you might have done wrong so i dloaded all the needed files to check it out myself... it worked fine!

here's what to do... from THIS PAGE you have to dload:

The Magnetic 2.1 Win95 interpreter (of course!)
from game files:
the wonderland story file (wonderm.zip)
and optionally the gfx file (wonderg.zip) and the title pic (wonder.png)

create a folder wherever you want in your hd naming it whatever you want (eg Wonderland)... extract the Magnetic21Win.zip file and the game files in that folder... then run Magnetic.exe, select Open New Game from file menu and open the file wonder.mag from the wonderland folder... THAT'S IT!!! (to be able to see the graphics type graphics on)

btw after seing it that way i STRONGLY recommend you dload the original version... you'll get all the windows with the gfx, the compass, the map, your inventory etc... of course the Amiga version is the ideal play!

Level 9? Interesting, I will look for them in HOTU right now.

a lot of confidence i see! good... that's very good... try The Guild Of Thieves then!

Overconfidence, I would say. I started playing Fish! and my brain almost explode with the first puzzle: otaining a disc then burn it, etc. But finally I made it.
I must say that the parser and the general interface are outrageus. I downloaded "The magnetic Scrolls colection
I" from HOTU. This version, according to HOTU, is updated. It looks pretty fine, with several windows (compass, inventory, objects, etc) besides the main one for the text. I also noticed the pure British english they use. It is a nice and diferent feature, tough I have some problems to understand some words since I am more familira with american english.

yeah that was MS's new interpreter that was first used by Wonderland... i prefered the old one though

it's been years since i played those games and when i did i didn't know about british/american english... i only knew the english i was learning then and what my dictionary said! so i haven't noticed that... it's probably the same with L9's advs though

Woohoo....I have Alice, it worked!  thanks so much...i have the text adventure and graphics.  What did you mean about the compass, map and inventory windows?  I typed "graphics on" and got the picture, do i type something to get those additional windows too?  are they all in the same graphics file dl?  thanks, Aya, I'm thrilled (now to download the rest of the Magnetic games...)!

Aya, follow up question:  can i put other magnetic games in the same folder as wonderland?  and then when i run magnetic.exe i can choose from all?  or will it run better if i keep separate folders for each game, and put a copy of the interpreter in each file or move it around as needed...probably a goofy question, but i'm so happy Alice works, i don't want to mess it up!

you can't have the compass, map and inv windows that way (AFAIK)... you have to play the standalone version to get those.... here's what the (emulated) Amiga version looks like (i HAD to do that
)

the files can be put anywhere you want (as long as the main and the gfx files of a game are together)... it would be more convenient (imo) to have them in separate folders... or maybe have a main folder for the interpreter and within this folder have subfolders for each game... smth like:

magnetic
/|\
wonderland pawn fish etc etc

AFAIK/R = as far as i know/remember

which dl link are you referring to? if you're referring to the one you dloaded the interpreter and the game files from then no, you can't dload it from there... the standalone version (PC) can be found at The Underdogs... i could never get that to work though (when i tried a couple of years ago) but i always prefer the amiga versions anyway
