Definitely.  I have two boys and watching them grow up is simply amazing.  From the age of 7, boys socialise with each other by playing [s]stupid games[/s] on the Nintendo.  They barely speak yet when they leave they all profess to having had the greatest afternoon.  Go figure.   [smiley=shrug.gif]

Absolutely

Life should NOT be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in an attractive and well preserved body, but rather to skid in sideways, chocolate in one hand, wine in the other screaming, "WOO HOO what a ride!!!

Different things for different people... I think they can both *help* socialize, and also *hurt* socialization.
My nephew is a master video game player, and while isn't otherwise comfortable talking to his peers about sports or girls, when they start talking video games, he's a totally different person and full of confidence... can't knock that.)

Video games WILL socialize people - socialize good or socialize bad - that remains to be seen however !

Sure

After getting high speed service last March I loaded up my old copy of Crimson Skies and started playing it online.

Within an hour I chatted with several people people offering advice on gameplay and within a few weeks I was approached to join a clan.

Now I have lots of online friends, and I wouldn't have known  them if i hadn't been playing Crimson Skies.

Regards

S

video games can socialize people to a certain extent

however, it is too far of a leap to say video games can socialize people to go on kill sprees or whatnot.   that only happens because those people were really mentally disturbed before they played some video games

Well, I WILL say that MMORPGs and MMO's of any kind DEFINITELY "socialize" people.  I have several people I now consider actually friends and even talk to on the telephone that I "met" while playing an MMO.

I have two friends from World of Warcraft that I've been playing with almost daily for a year, and the same with Everquest 2 (I have one friend from that game).  These are people I actually SPEAK with now, not just ingame, but in real life.

As with ANY hobby....yes, video games are social.
Presently playing Everquest 2 and World of Warcraft obsessively....as well as any other good games that appear on the horizon. I love all genres!

It's a bit scary.

I cannot honestly sit here and say playing a MMORPG is a real social experience.

Chat room with a 3D world ?.

accept in this chat room all you do is have VERY shallow and fleeting annonymous, mostly stategic

words or just pure mindless banter, with people you neither know or will likely see again.

Of course there is the odd exceptions.

But really, we can't contine to fool ourself into believing this is a social hotspot

It's the sore part of my life...... nearly all of it exsist's online these days
.

I appreciate the friends and community found here on the Net.

Shame you can't hear them laugh, or share a beer  :'(

It will change, perhaps a bit further down the road, it will become further relised as a social-activity.

no, certainly not. A true game experience is an intimate experience between the virtual world and the player. MMo's are just an socialising illusion

Well look at us here.  We're all "socializing" in the virtual sense.  We're talking and connecting in a disjointed way.  So yes, even the act of getting on-line to talk about games socializes people.  Video gaming is a social activity when you start talking about gaming outside of gameplay.

Sosializing through games is a big issue...i ve seen people ruining their lives just becouse they met another easygoing reallity in the virtual world. Its addictive just becouse its easy and there are no strings attached.
I have heard people having huge fights over a game character or (the most common)using unbelievably bad lang to each other...i dont think its worth it...
Communication through games can be very enjoyable as long as it doesnt get mistaken as a substitute for real life.
Games are made for FUN afterall.  :

mmm... I really don't believe video games help people socializae, don't get me wrong, i love to play video games but it is not the kind of thing that would make me get closer with somebody else.
Everyone makes mistakes. The trick is to make them when nobody is looking.

I think people who are generally well-socialized and polite will be sociable and polite in a gaming context.  Others will choose to play shooters on Xbox Live!

Excessive extreme gaming can definitely ruin lives, though, and oddly enough it seems to be the most "social" games that do the real damage.  The most reclusive Otaku in Japan, the genuine "no-lifes", tend to play WoW or Lineage or other MMOs - sometimes literally until they die.

It's very hard to imagine anyone dying because they couldn't look away from The Sydney Mystery, or donning an adult nappy for a marathon uninterrupted session of Syberia!

I just returned from a house where we ate, drunk, played bored games and then started playing games, such as tennis in Wii! We spent a joyful night full of laughter and joy! I believe that games can socialize people as long people are open-minded and not soooooooo fastidious.
