Recently, Rael has posted his list of must-play for infocom advs. This post encourage me to do my own top-five concerning amateur txt advs. Here it is:

1) Phototopia: This game (1st Place, 1998 Interactive Fiction Competition) proudly deserves being classified in the category of "unique" and "experimental". It has the most interesting plot I have ever played in amateur IF. Two worlds connected by colors... You can download it in the author's homepage: http://adamcadre.ac/games.html.

2) Anchorhead: Clearly inspired in the work of H.P. Lovecraft, this game put you in the shoes of a recently married woman who arrives to her new house in Anchorhead, New England. The game is really atmospheric and inmersive. Clever puzzles, good writing and lots of details make a must-play, specially if you are a Lovecraft fan. Find it at www.the-underdogs.org

3) Kaged: A sad story concerning a dictatorial state. You are one of its servants but quickly find reasons and tools for trying to disolve it. Nice graphics and music are inserted (the game makes an extraordinary use of the latest HTML TADS parser).

4) Babel: resembling the plot of System Shock, you wake up with amnesia (retrograde amnesia, technically speaking) and found yourself in a completely empty spaceship. The game is very polished and puzzles are fair. www.ifarchive.org/if-archive/games/tads/Babel31.gam

5) Downtown Tokyo, present day: Ok, this game is eally short and not very ambicious. But, it is very, very funny. You play from two perspectives and in one of them you have the opportunity to fight against a "cousin" of Godzilla. Interesting and hilarious "graphics", too, resembling those of "A mind forever vogaying.http://ifarchive.org/if-archive/games/competition98/inform/tokyo/tokyo.z5

Ok, this is my top five. I am listening your opinnions and suggestions!!

Yes, Photopia and Anchorhead are placed where they belong.
I played Babel, but didn't finish it. I has an interesting plot.
I never played Kaged, but I heard very positive things about that.
I didn't like Downtown Tokyo.
playing: Destination Treasure Island (done in two sittings, but it's nice), Syberia (ho-hum), Dracula: Last Sanctuary (on hold)&&reading: even more study papers&&listening to: this and that, plus Musicovery&&TV favorites: (currently) Pushing Daisies, Chuck, Journeyman (cancelled! grrr...), Heroes&&
all-time) 24, Stargate SG1, X-Files, Lost, House

Excellent list, Ricardo!

I just started playing Photopia - I heard a lot about it about but I never got to play it. The writing is superb and the story is very unusual.

Thank you!

Yes, Phototopia is great. I found myself thinking about the game two or three days after having finished. It is very well written.

i haven't played any amateur txt advs yet... i really want to and MUST find the time to do that asap... i've heard a lot of good stuff about Photopia and Anchorhead and those are probably the ones i'll play first... i have dloaded them from udogs, as well as around 20 others that were "top dogs"... hope i'll manage to play them soon

You have gotten the attention of the mysterious lady. She turns to face you. Her face is devoid of any flesh. You are frozen with horror as she begins ripping your body into a bloody mess.

Never heard of it. What is it about? Which parser does it use?

Thanks for the link, Joy. The screenshots are impressive. I should include it in my to-play list, I think.

Had a look at that Dirty Bastards site, it does look interesting, however not having played any of these amateur text adventures I was wondering if they are really worthwhile taking up room on the computer?

Actually I have to admit I didn't even know they were available - just to show my ignorance.
