It's too hard to pick a single best movie, but it seems we are all thinking more or less of movies that put us in a certain mood that we like every time we watch it.

I must also say Blade Runner is one of those movies for me, because of its mood. There's nothing quite like it.

Another movie that I can watch for this reason alone is Barry Lyndon. It's really long and nothing terribly exciting happens as far as the story goes. But the pictures!

Long, generally slow and in places quite tedious, Barry Lyndon is still a truly gorgeous piece of film making from Stanley Kubrick.

I prefer Milos Forman's Amadeus for it's depiction of 18th century European aristocracy and of course for a much stronger story with better acting and the single greatest musical score ever written.

Also wanted to add that there are movies we rewatch to put us in a certain mood and others that are just perfectly suited for the mood we're already in. Rare ones can change our moods dynamically from hopeful and positive to dark and depressed or the other way around. Those are special films that have a real impact on us no matter how many times we see them. They just hit home and push all the right buttons from beginning to end. They also come in all different genres in every style and scope including small independent productions, (occassional) big Hollywood blockbusters and everything in between. They can be moving love stories, tragic war movies, sweeping epics, biopics, murder mysteries, comedies, you name it. All we know is when we see one, we are genuinely touched and we remember the experience vivdly for many years to come.

Of course personal taste and mood always play a role. But most people can agree that the true classics in every category are just that - classics.

Cheers,  Terry

Both Ran and Seven Samurai are in my list. I had forgotten about Ikiru but it certainly deserves to be on it also.

There are so many re makes of older movies. That's all well and good, but after a while, I'd like to see something brand new! There has got to be zillions of writers out there with original, creative, new ideas for screenplays. Why are they being ignored? I would Love to see a NEW Sci-fi, or a new horror film, even a new children's film would be nice.
My brother in law is a screenplay writer in NYC. He has the coolest ideas  for sci-fi and action movies that are brand new
and so "why haven't they made this into a movie" interesting! We need some fresh new blood in this area, don't ya think?
