Galaxy Quest. Independence Day. Dirty Rotten Scoundrels. LadyHawke. Shrek.
These are movies I have the DVD to. I guess to qualify as a great movie in my mind it has to be something I want to watch over again.
I've hired a lot of very ordinary DVDs lately.

Status : Online | Again, no best, because it depends on the genre. My favorites would include: One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest (though only seen once, so that might change, but I doubt) Memento Fight Club Pulp Fiction Groundhog Day (I love anything related to this phenomenon...my favorite episodes of TV shows like X-Files and SG1 are among those with a day repeating over and over) Almost Famous
Still undecided about a horror movie, because I still have to see the greats, but The Shining, The Thing and Evil Dead are heads-up right now.
playing: Destination Treasure Island (done in two sittings, but it's nice), Syberia (ho-hum), Dracula: Last Sanctuary (on hold)&&reading: even more study papers&&listening to: this and that, plus Musicovery&&TV favorites: (currently) Pushing Daisies, Chuck, Journeyman (cancelled! grrr...), Heroes&& all-time) 24, Stargate SG1, X-Files, Lost, House

Although made before I was born, I still love all the original Thin Man movies starring William Powell and Myrna Loy as Nick and Nora Charles along with Asta The Wonder Dog and a terrific supporting cast of notable character actors. Same goes for Laura, Otto Preminger's all-time great detective love story starring Gene Tierney, Dana Andrews, Vincent Price and Clifton Webb as Waldo Lydecker with one of the most memorable scores ever written by David Raksin.
There are of course a host of other old Hollywood classics I love but of the major American films made during my lifetime, I still adore both Chinatown and One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest - which IMO epitomize the career of Jack Nicholson.
For broad comedy and wry social commentary, another of my all-time favorites is Stanley Kubrick's brilliantly funny anti-nuclear war epic Dr. Strangelove or: HILTSWALTB starring Peter Sellers in three major roles and an amazing cast of other talented actors. Who could ever forget Slim Pickens' dry reading of the contents of the official U.S. Air Force Survival Kit to the somber tune of Johnny Comes Marching Home Again or George C. Scott's reaction to the Russian Ambassador's seeing "The Big Board" or Sterling Hayden's paranoid ramblings as Brigadier General Jack D. Ripper about the contamination of vital bodily fluids to Seller's hilariously befuddled Group Captain Lionel Mandrake?
For serious mystery and suspense, nothing to date has beaten the original Alfred Hithcock classics. For truly good sci-fi (with a definite Hitchcockian touch of class), Ridley Scott's Blade Runner based on Philip K. Dick's short story still takes the cake in almost every department.
Cheers, Terry

Every now and then these bubbles would appear on the surface of the water and it seemed as though somekind of monster lived beneath it. Except, (spoiler), in the end it turned out to be somekind of mechanical digger. Does anybody remember this film?

Think scary movies now. Which ones had you looking behind the couch and under the stairs? Which ones had you turn the volume down on the remote, because you thought you heard something??? Which ones gave you nightmares when you were a kid?? The very FIRST Halloween did it for me when i was a kid! It was the first of it's kind! I never trick or treated alone after that!!! There are some movies that just make the hair on the back of your neck stand up!!!!! Which ones do that to you??

The little time spent on the actual plot is rushed and abrupt, so many vital omissions. Now I understand you just can't transfer the whole book into film, but come on! Plus, they added stupid and irrelevant elemants.
Yes, it was stunning, yes, it was beautiful, even decently acted, but script/direction wise, it was atrociuos. The book thousands of times better than the movie.

I must also say Blade Runner is one of those movies for me, because of its mood. There's nothing quite like it.
Another movie that I can watch for this reason alone is Barry Lyndon. It's really long and nothing terribly exciting happens as far as the story goes. But the pictures!
