It's been on my mind to update this for awhile, having played some good games since the last list. But I never could quite bring myself to do it, as the first one was frustrating to compile (but fun at the same time). Seeing some new and updated lists appearing here, I finally took the plunge. This was hard, having to compare some very different games, some that I haven't played for 15 years. I'm also one of those who feel this list could change if you asked me a little later. I like roughly the top half a lot more evenly than the spread would suggest (except for the top three, which stand above the rest to me) -- I wish I could somehow compress the top half of this list into the top ten spots.

1. Riven
2. Obsidian
3. Myst (I admit this is something of a sentimental choice...and no, I don't care that it is either.)

4. Gabriel Knight 1
5. Day of the Tentacle (Best Comic Adventure Ever. All other comic adventures should bow to it. And take notes on puzzle design.)
6. Monkey Island 1
7. Gabriel Knight 2
8. Broken Sword 1
9. Grim Fandango
10. Sam & Max Hit The Road
11. The Neverhood
12. Journeyman Project 3
13. Timelapse
14. Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis
15. Monkey Island 3
16. Shivers
17. Sanitarium
18. Journeyman Project 2
19 Gabriel Knight 3
20. Myst 3 (Deserves better perhaps, but I recently replayed this right after Riven and it suffered badly in comparision.)
21. Riddle of the Sphinx
22. Deja Vu
23. Uninvited
24. The 7th Guest
25. Full Throttle
26. The Longest Journey (Honestly, I don't know where to put this game. I can think of good reasons to put it into the top 10....or not to put it on the list at all. So I compromised, and put it in the middle.)
27. Monkey Island 2 (Might deserve better, but was I was pretty frustrated with this one and put off by the ending. A replay now having gotten a lot of adventure gaming experience since would probably improve the ranking much like my replay of Riven, which catapulted it to number 1.)
28. In Memoriam
29. Broken Sword 2
30. Syberia
31. Safecracker (2000) (I know, it's relatively high on the list for what it is. But I had a lot of fun with this game. I'm not hard to please -- I'm just a pushover for a mansion crammed with puzzles.)
32. Aura
33. Maniac Mansion
34, Amerzone
35. Mean Streets
36. Discworld
37. Barrow Hill
38. Broken Sword 3
39. Scratches
40. Shadowgate
41. Bad Mojo
42. Other Worlds
43, Monkey Island 4
44. Connections
45. Runaway
46. Golden Gate
47. Flight of the Amazon Queen
48. Post Mortem
49. Princess Tomato in the Salad Kingdom (Yes, I realize this was oriented for kids. But it was one of the few adventures I could find back when the NES was my only source for adventure gaming, and I still have fond memories of it.)
50. Harvest

Deleted Usernice list, i can relate to it
although it's of course different from mine. it also made me realise i rated barrow hill a bit too high, probably because i played it recently.

ps  second time i've seen connections on someone's list.

I would have liked to rate Barrow Hill higher than I did, but there just wasn't enough gameplay there for me to justify it even though I liked it quite a bit. Even a moderate increase in playing time, say 25-30%, would have probably moved the game up higher on my list.

Deleted Userandromus, you're right about the length of barrow hill, i'd forgotten it was so short... and it really isn't fair to the space bar that i rated barrow hill 20-30 and space bar, a totally different type of adventure which i enjoyed so much in spite of its many warts, only 30-40. so i made them swap places.

ps... i'm thinking of sending dott to the developers of tunguska as a gift... so they can study its exemplary puzzle design which you mentioned.

Alkis: And Other Worlds well deserves to be there. It's still by far the best freeware adventure game I've played, and certainly the most epic. Not to say I didn't have a few quibbles about the game, but the positive points about the game made up for it many times more.

You have gotten the attention of the mysterious lady. She turns to face you. Her face is devoid of any flesh. You are frozen with horror as she begins ripping your body into a bloody mess.

Thanks Alkis! How about an update on yours?
Would be nice to see some more updated lists here from people who posted here long time ago, like Aya did.

Not much to update... I've only had time to play something like 15 adventure games since I made the list, and out of them only Scratches would make it into my Top 50 (no Aya, Black Mirror doesn't make it)... perhaps as #23, after Future Wars and before The Book of Spells.

You can check my Top-30 of Adventure games characters if you like.

Gosh, I already spent so much time on making this top 50, I won't be venturing into making a list of my favourite characters.
Safe to say though, that most characters would be from Sierra games. And I guess my number one would Gabe. Don't know yet from which one of the series though, I liked all three incarnations. I'll throw in Rincewind, George & Nico, Murray, April Ryan and Guybrush as well.

@Andromus:
Nice list! Plenty of games on their that I have yet to play!
I noticed that, except for the Gabriel Knight games and Shivers, there are no Sierra games on there. Is it because you didn't like them or because you haven't played them yet? Just wondering.
Also, I seem to remember you played Shivers 2 after finishing the first one. I found them both very good, with the first one slightly better (especially disliked the going into the canyon bits in Shivers 2). I see Shivers 2 didn't make your list. Do you consider it much worse than the first in the series?

A little bit of both, I'd say. I haven't played that many, and have been turned off by Sierra's general game design (dead ends, lots of dying, much of it unfair) to the point that I've been avoiding all of Sierra's games like that. Which basically limits me to the Gabriel Knight series, and the handful of puzzlers they produced. But with the rerelease of Sierra's Quest games at bargain prices, there's a reasonable chance I'll give them another try at some point. Though they didn't include the series I was probably most curious about, Quest for Glory.

Objectively, Shivers 2 should be on my list, but it was a mixed bag for me and its bad points were still too fresh in my mind. Overall the puzzles were pretty good, but I was very annoyed by how many triggers you had to activate before inventory items appeared or puzzles became active. My biggest problem was that I missed an early trigger that activated the main puzzles, so I wandered around town for awhile, wondering where all the puzzles were until I stumbled on to that.

The later entries in the quest series do become more forgiving than the first ones, especially the Larry games (Larry 2 & 3 are the only ones where you can die regularly and unexpectedly). I never minded the zillion ways to die in Sierra games. I grew up with those games and grew accustomed to the 'save often' way of playing these games. But I understand that when you're going from LucasArts 'you can't die' games to the early Sierra games, the change in gameplay may be disappointing. Still, most of them make up for it with fun puzzles and good stories. I guess I'll always be a Sierra fan.

Ah, I must have accidently activated all triggers in the correct order then, never had that similar problem you had. I agree with you on the puzzles part, some great ones in there!

I'm willing to trade my copy of the game, but you should probably post this request on the Game Trade or Sale area of the forum.

Deleted UserMmmm.. I see Guild of Thieves is a 1987 text adventure. So it's that good, is it? If I may ask, why?

I also noticed you left out Gabe Knight 1. Any specific reason for that?

Well Guild of Thieves is my favourite text adventure...I'm a big fan of Magnetic Scrolls (the mother company) and they created some of the best text adventures ever - you should also check out the rest of their stuff like Jinxter, Fish, Corruption.  Witty, great writing, imaginative, atmospheric stuff.  The thing about text adventures is that they leave a lot more of the picture to your imagination.  Magnetic Scrolls' adventures though were among the first to have images along with the text, and it was an added bonus every time a new image for a location popped up!

I actually played Gabriel Knight 1 after I finished the other two...and it really paled in comparison.  It was still entertaining and well written enough but I never got to finish it.  I'm sure if my order of playing was reversed I would have put it in there.  I'll have to finish it first to make a good judgment.

Aya!!How on earth are you!!

Oh, i don't think you even know i accidentally deleted my old account (I think you left before that) ... which is why i'm back to being guild master, LOL  (And why you see ghosts of my old account popping up everywhere-usually just titled "deleted member"

Oh my goodness, i hope a lot of old members come back now!    A bunch of you left because you had found new loves in your lives.... i hope everything is still going well.
