Since you asked...

18. Lure Of The Temptress
42. The Pandora Directive
46. The Dagger Of Amon Ra
48. Personal Nightmare
49. Rise Of The Dragon

I believe the five games above have too many flaws to be considered "best".
If Other Worlds is really worse than "The Dagger of Amon Ra", perhaps I wasted three years of my life for nothing. [smiley=laughing.gif]

there cannot be a top 50 without laura bow! as for the rest, they are all great adventures, but opinions are opinions... i cannot believe that larry 7 or syberia 1 & 2 belong to a top 50 list for example (weren't you telling me that you hated syberia 1 when you first played it btw?
)

nooooooooooooo! you marred your list... why leave the txt advs out? it doesn't matter if no one has played them - on the contrary, it might give ppl new titles to look for... i was waiting to see which place the notorious seas of blood would get! revise your list and include everything... and i guess i need to play temujin sometime soon!

I agree. What's the point of listing a Top 50 if you're not including games you don't think people will have heard of. That's not your Top 50  - that's your "Top 50 games that you like and people have heard of".

I've told you before, no, I found the first chapter very dull but the rest was fine. In my book it scores pretty low in the puzzles department, the dialogue interface is inadequate and there's an average of 2-3 hotspots per screen, but the story and atmosphere are fantastic.

nooooooooooooo! you marred your list... why leave the txt advs out? it doesn't matter if no one has played them - on the contrary, it might give ppl new titles to look for... i was waiting to see which place the notorious seas of blood would get! revise your list and include everything... and i guess i need to play temujin sometime soon!

You already know which place SoB gets, it's #10 in my homepage where all Monkey Islands are in #1, therefore in this list it would be #11. I reckon at least 10 and maybe as much as 20 text adventures could make it to the list, some are well known such as The Hobbit, Zork and Wishbringer, but most are freeware Amiga text adventures... so nobody would play them anyway! If anyone's looking for games in my list that they haven't played, the should check the amateur adventures like Pleurghburg Dark Ages and The Book of Spells.
And by the way, don't play Temujin.. I'm the only one who likes it. It's pretty bad, honestly, but the hard puzzles and the "what the hell is going on" story made me love it.

Yes, I played it, and unfortunately it fell foul of the extreme hype that it had received on these boards. Way back when we had our last top 50 about two years ago (constructed from personal top 10 lists) it was a clear winner. I tracked it down after that and all the constant talk about it, and pretty much disliked it from start to finish. Such is the way with high expectations.

In brief... I thought it was extremely deritative, poorly constructed plot-wise, very badly scripted, unsure of it's target audience and obviously... agonisingly drawn out. I know it's much loved, but I had a very hard time finding anything to like. April Ryan is high on the list of characters I'd like to slap very hard.

Good enough Dom.

Interesting though that personal preferences, timing and expectations often effect how we perceive indiviudal games to a large degree. I happen to love third person story-driven AGs full of chatty NPCs in large, diverse game worlds. I also love well designed graphics and integrated puzzles of all kinds.

So just on the surface, TLJ qualified as a keeper in my book. But more to the point, I did not play the game with such high expectations and knew very little about the details at the time. So it was also a very pleasant surprise when the first gorgeous scene came up and I was able to first take control of April. Right off the bat I delighted in simply exploring the immediate dream sequence area before the waking scenes began. From there I enjoyed learning about the heroine, the game world/s and the other characters as the story unfolded. By the end, I actually cared about April and found the wide open epilogue to be charming. The game also made me laugh outloud several times which always helps.

Cheers,  Terry

April Ryan never did what I wanted her to do (i.e. shag the horny guy across the hall, kill the creepy Latino, and set fire to the magical market), so I really disliked her. The hero from Full Throttle is more my speed.

it doesn't matter if they're freeware amiga txt advs, they have to be there... and in your homepage list you have larry 1-7 too - that would push sob even further down!

it's bad? somehow this game always intrigued me... the fact that it takes place only in a few rooms kinda triggers my curiosity to see what it's all about... i will play it sometime

I keep forgetting that you're not good with numbers.. I have Larry 1-7 in my site's Top-10, but only Larry 3 is in the Top-10 I posted above, therefore I was right about SoB being 11th.

I'm just wondering why so few people included TLJ in their top 10?
Maybe I'm alone in including this in mine - along with GK3, GK2, BS1, BS2, Grim Fandango, Black Dahlia, The Feeble Files, Monkey Island, and Darkseed ( in no particular order - although Darkseed would probably closer to the bottom of the list) - these are all great games and all bring back good memories!

I  really don't think I have played 50 adventure games!

It's certainly in my top 10. I was worried with the saccharine start (and glad that it didn't end that way), but I totally melted the first time she said "Use the force, Luke!".

Heh.

ps: I forgot to say, I don't think I've hit 50 yet either, but I'm approaching rapidly. Hitting the used game bin at game stores and book stores, I somehow ended up with dozens of them over the past month. I'll probably still be working over them when summer hits!

I didn't include The Longest Journey in my top 10, because I didn't make a top 10, and I found it rather boring.

I'm thinking that instead of trying to rank my games 1-50, it might be better for me if I just make an alphabetical list of 50 games I've played and have enjoyed very much.

I finally compiled this insane top 50 list. It was not as tough as I thought it would be, although I might change my opinion once I play those older games again and see they are not THAT good (like Indy and the Fate of Atlantis, for example).
And I forgot a few, I've already seen that. Well, what sticks in the memory must be your favorites, after all...

Here it is, from bottom to top with small evaluations (well, so small that I have to split it...) that I put in italics, because they contain spoilers and you maybe should not read them (Italics make text harder to read) if you didn't play those games...uhm, sorry:

#50 Orion Burger it's an enormously frustrating game, but somewhat of a gem and should make the list
#49 Mission Supernova German shareware adventure (the only shareware game I ever ordered the full version of) which is simplistic and strange to navigate, but fun)
#48 Mystery of the Mummy nice Sherlock game
#47 Innocent Until Caught it has some nice puzzles and a truly chaotic inventory screen...
#46 Larry Vales 2 the less funny of the Vales games I know
#45 Runaway beautiful artwork, but lacks something
#44 Myst 4: Revelation must have the most stunning graphics ever and a tight atmosphere, but few puzzles and those few are mostly too hard for me...I didn't finish it, btw
#43 I have no mouth and I must scream original gameplay and story adapted from a novel with multiple endings, most of which I can't claim to have seen...quite a few bugs on the other hand
#42 Andromedas Erbe that's the sequel to Mission Supernova and it's a better game than the first because it felt to me like almost a commercial output at the time I played it...but the same interface issues (if you perceive them as such)
#41 Broken Sword 3 I love the characters and the interface was quite interesting (although too console-y for my taste), but this game has too many...crates... and an uninspired story line - which might be the endings fault - which makes me think again, that multi-platform politics could kill the adventure genre if anything can...
#40 Gateway a solid and enjoyable semi-text adventure to play
#39 Eric the Unready slightly better than Gateway for me, because it is funny

#38 Zork Nemesis actually, I can't remember it all that much, but I remember having more fun with this than with any other game of its sort, which is a stupid thing to say, because I didn't play all that many of them...
#37 Beneath A Steel Sky this game starts out promising, but it is too short and Joey should not be missing one second, because he made this game worth the while most of all
#36 King's Quest 7 I actually liked it back then...nothin else to say
#35 King's Quest 2 Remake from what I've heard of the original it's a vast improvement over that, although some people beg to differ
#34 Leisure Suit Larry 7 I played 1, 6 and 7 and this one seems to be the funniest, although I probably should have taken 6 in here, too, because I believe it was quite good, but too much time has passed and I don't remember, so...and I played 2, but gave up on it
#33 Sherlock Holmes and the Silver Earring the case is interesting, but the puzzles involve mazes and timed sequences and both at once at that, which makes it as awful as it can get...fortunately there are some nicer puzzles, too
#32 Larry Vales the funnier of the Vales games I know and only slightly beaten by Duckman
#31 Duckman probably one of the greatest surprises I had, because it has hilarious dialogue
#30 Blade Runner it's the first experimental adventure hybrid I played, before I've even seen the movie, and therefore I probably never got all of the references...multiple paths affected by your choices, multiple endings, but sometimes you just don't know what to do to get on a certain path
#29 Death Gate I played it most recently, got it for 5€ and was pleasantly surprised about the puzzles it contained and about the length of this game...it really is Legend's best, at least from those I played
#28 Mysterious Journey 2 (Schizm 2) I really liked the FPS interface approach and I wasn't bothered about the non-existent justification of many of the puzzles...I just enjoyed solving them and amazingly I didn't even need the walkthrough more than once or twice (damn you, elevator)...didn't yet get Sentinel and maybe that's the reason why Detalion is no more...
#27 Monkey Island 4 I don't care what people say, but it's still a good Monkey Island game, I even liked Monkey Kombat!
#26 Dark Fall the scariest game I ever played...but I expected more from the ending and once you've been to all the rooms you get used to the chills...not really, it still was creepy as hell

#25 Simon the Sorcerer a young apprentice of the magic arts travels through a cupboard into a world infested with fairy tales and almost all clichés possible, just like in early KQ games...with the exception that Simon is funnier and the puzzles are more interesting...this one is a classic
#24 Anchorhead it's the most atmospheric text adventure I played and while I'm saying this I might add: I never even finished it! but i will some day start again and end this...anyway, it must be one of the best IF works out there and it's the only one that makes my list
#23 Discworld 2 I can't find it any more...everyone denies having it...I would really like to play this game again, I remember it was lots of trading item A for item B, but it was funnier than Discworld and quite lengthy...I miss it...
#22 Simon the Sorcerer 2 it's even better than the first one in my opinion, because it's less ordinary fairy tale and novel rip-offs and also funnier than the original, with more good puzzles
#21 The Last Express I got it on budget, played it, didn't get into it and stuck, let it dust almost 2 years, read good things about it, then got it out again, played it, enjoyed it and declared it one of the best and original adventure games I've seen, despite some minor flaws, not including the fighting scenes necessarily, because they didn't cause me much pain...it even has two different endings
#20 Sherlock Holmes and the Case of the Serrated Scalpel my very first adventure and it will always have a place in my heart because of that...I replayed it numerous times, almost forgetting the plot each go-through, which makes for excellent replayability :

#19 Grim Fandango this game makes any list of top adventures and easily the top 5 for many people, why not for me...I can't tell, I really liked the idea of talking skeletons and the plot was interesting (the only one I know of involving a big time gap), everything was done superbly except some of the puzzles didn't do it for me...I only rented it and played through it
#18 The Dig I only played it recently and it immediately got into my circle of favorites...I liked the sci-fi plot, the characters, the locations and there were some really nice puzzles, too...just a bit too short, I didn't yet want to stop...
#17 Discworld I need to replay this soon - in fact I started and had to quit because of lack of time - because this must be one of the most difficult - and bundled with game-stopping bugs, occasionally frustrating - adventure games I've played, yet it was so much fun...you either hate or love it
#16 Monkey Island 3 it's a classic Monkey Island game with crazily branching dialogue trees - impossible to hear all the lines unless you save after every sentence - and a rather anti-climactic ending, but who cares about those, anyway?
#15 Monkey Island the first in the series is still an absolute classic, introducing insult sword fights, undead pirates and three-headed monkeys behind your back
#14 The Longest Journey THE adventure game of modern times, winning all the popularity contests...it's a fascinating ride, lots of talking, some nice puzzles, some sillier puzzles, but never boring and with one of the snippiest voice actresses I've heard...but it can't make the top 10 and perhaps it's even overrated just now
#13 Woodruff and the Schnibble of Azimuth secretly, I want to place this in the top 10...it's wacky and at times very hard and obscure...it's a real underdog and underappreciated adventure gem by Sierra/Coktel Vision you can get here in Germany for 2€ these days, but I got it years ago and replayed it 3 times since then, I think, and it is high time to do that again...love it
#12 Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis I used to think it belongs higher up, but I recently replayed it and didn't like it as much as I once did...real multiple paths, but some parts feel too linear...certainly one of the best with the Indy factor
#11 Toonstruck one of these games that get better along the way, with a funny sidekick, tons of toons and only outwardly appearing to be a kiddy game...it's definitely not...there's lots of black humor in this one, I may overrate this, but only to balance those that underrate it...

uhm...still too long...

#10 Gabriel Knight starting a series of interface-changing adventures this is the conventional p&c one with an engaging plot, a bit too much pixel-hunting for some and an annoying arcade sequence (without a slomo-tool on modern PCs..yes, I didn't use one *slap*), but there are clever puzzles just as well...truly a classic

#9 Under A Killing Moon my first FMV game and I remember how fascinated I was when I began solving this case...Tex Murphy is a cool character, Chelsea is hot, the plot is great, the interface is best for this, it's fun and has a cult status for me

#8 King's Quest 6 another one of those first adventure games...nostalgia gives those a brighter color than they most likely deserve, but back then (age 12 I think) I was put in a spell by the "Cliff", some sort of puzzle-copy-protection system, it fit right in...I think I will still love this if I replay it, but I don't have it any more...

#7 Riddle of Master Lu Where is it??? I miss this more than Discworld 2 and opposite to that one I don't even have a clue who might have it...it's just gone and I so much want to play it again...aargh

#6 Day of the Tentacle ok, I was lying earlier, Serrated Scalpel wasn't my very first game, in fact that and DOTT were my very first two games at the same time and I cross-played them - unfortunately using walkthroughs repeatedly, inexperienced as I was...it's one of the funniest games I've ever played and I remember the puzzles like they were the biggest mystery in life...that's how I feel about all those "first" adventures, they will always have a cult status that is probably undeserved in light of today

#5 Pandora Directive multiple paths, multiple endings, a weird unfolding plot in X-Files fashion, Tex Murphy, Chelsea and a new woman, forming a menage (I know, the accents are missing) à trois...it's better than UAKM and isn't...it's hard to tell, it all depends on how strange you like your plot, but there's so much in this package, it's not likely that we see games like this these days...and I still don't have Overseer...

#4 Sam & Max without the two protagonists and that sort of humor which either strikes you or it doesn't that wouldn't be the classic it is, I guess...puzzles are not all that great, actually, but with memorable moments like croco-golf and the World's Largest Ball of Yarn among all those crazy monuments and locations throughout America you get to see it's among my all-time favorites

#3 Broken Sword I'm thinking about changing this place with Pandora Directive, then again I think about how often I replayed this and I realize I can't decide where to put them so I go with the popularity and BS is winning in that respect, so here we go, what should I say, this is a must-play p&c with an interesting plot, many locations to visit and puzzles to solve, at times reminiscent of Indiana Jones (obviously) and who doesn't like that? huh?

#2 Monkey Island 2 I'm certain that I overrate this a whole lot, but I replayed it more than anything else and I can't help, but this game has the most imaginative inventory-based puzzles I've come across - including the infamous, but by me much loved "monkeywrench" - which didn't make any sense when I played it first in German, so please, what do you people complain about? :
- plus it's funny plus it has Elaine...uh, yeah...plus it has the most controversial ending in the adventure genre EVER or so it feels and I am one of those who LOVE it for the sake of its wackiness...roundabout perfect

#1 Gabriel Knight 3 it's quite unfair...there are some annoying parts and a big arcade fest that doesn't feel like it had to be in there, but yet I call it my favorite game of all time, overruling the long-lasting champion Monkey Island 2, just because I never had so much fun figuring out what is going on and Le Serpent Rouge is really one of the most cleverly designed puzzles there ever was, the German synch does NOT suck as the original apparently does, the graphics are fine in my book, the interface is the BEST that could possibly happen to this
game, you play both Gabriel and Grace, Sidney is a nifty addition and the plot would be enough for 3 seperate games instead of just one, yet it makes perfect - twisted - sense...I love it and I have yet to replay it, only problem is, I won't love it again as much, because once you've seen the whole thing play out it won't be the same I guess or so I fear, but...it's #1 for now

Yes, I forgot GK2 and some others. Hmm. GK2 at least belongs in there, although it isn't among my most favorite adventures up from 30, I'd say. Maybe later.

PS: Sorry, that was insane. You shouldn't bother reading that.  :

wow! impressive list-making elfstone!!! and a very interesting list, with lots of underdogs in there!

btw, i am sure my list has now some alterations after playing some top 50 material like qfg5 and gk3... i'm not making a new one of course - maybe in a couple of years again!

You have gotten the attention of the mysterious lady. She turns to face you. Her face is devoid of any flesh. You are frozen with horror as she begins ripping your body into a bloody mess.

Elfstone, I second Aya in commending you for an impressive top 50 list, you 3rd person, plot-oriented AG lover you
, though I'm surprised by your #1 pick. Anyway, it is an excellent list for people who are drawn to 3rd person, story-oriented games especially with the short summaries you give. It's too bad these things scroll away into relative oblivion.

BTW: Riddle of Master Lu is available in the U.S. at CDAccess. Don't know if that will work for you or not.

The future ain't what it used to be!

Thanks. Yes, I'm sort of 3rd-person oriented, how did you notice that?

But that's mostly because I stopped playing adventure games for a few years in which first person games became more prominent. I hate the original Myst (perhaps only because it was too hard for me then...), but that doesn't mean I detest all such games as you can see with my inclusion of MJ2.
Yeah, too bad this crazy-big list will vanish soon.
Perhaps we should have one of those threads sticky and everytime a person changes the list it will be replaced with the new one. Some kind of "members for members personal AG list".

Probably not. I won't order anything from the U.S. but perhaps I will keep my eyes out for this one, actively, not just whiningly...

@Aya
You surprise me with your inclusion of TLJ in your top10...I would never have thought that it ranks higher on your list than on mine.

Some games I forgot to mention (I will revise the list, I guess, but not right now):
Black Mirror
Full Throttle
Flight of the Amazon Queen
Cruise For A Corpse

That's it, can't think of any more, probably when I read the  other top50's later on. Pretty much the first 50 games that came to mind are in that list.
