Don't know if they work on XP: The Dame Was Loaded Noir: A Shadowy Thriller
Do you like spies? I'd recommend Spycraft and The Last Express. They are both XP compatible.

It's exactly how you describe it... an ex-detective is trying to solve a gruesome murder. I am in the middle of it, and really enjoying it!
oh, and WELCOME!

Black Dahlia Cameron Files: Secret At Loch Ness Cameron Files 2: Pharaoh's Curse
If it weren't for the last minute... nothing would get done.

try Black Dahlia. It is very difficult at places, but can be played. It will challenge you all the way.
If you'd like to try something older, Laura Bow-games are quite entertaining, and Hugo 2: WHodunit (although meant for ages below 20, is still buzzling at places)
Hopefully I helped.

Status : Online | Welcome! My only suggestion will be one of my favourite games: Discworld Noir, in the detective/noir genre; it is quite different from the earlier two Discworld games, and rather easier too. The game is heavy on dialogue however (especially if you are like me and love asking random questions to everyone you meet). There is one minor glitch in the starting menu, but other than that the game fully works on XP (you simply cannot use the starting menu except to start a game, and need to hit F1 to change the options and restore).
Other than that, perhaps you would like to play the other Broken Sword games (there's only Sleeping Dragon in your list); those should be able to work under XP without too much problem. There are also the other Tex Murphy games, but those aren't exactly XP-friendly. *Nods at SirDave * :

Status : Online | I second the Discworld Noir recommendation. Especially if you like Terry Pratchett at least a little bit.
If you don't mind old games, the old Police Quest series might be worth a shot. Very police-ish. The old Sherlock Holmes and the Case of Serrated Scalpel is pretty good too.
You might like the Elk Moon Murder and Sacred Ground games. They might not be the greatest games in general, but definitely fit your cop/detective/investigative requirement to a tee.
In Memoriam (aka Missing this side of the Atlantic) also has a lot of detecting and investigating in it.
Just in case you didn't know, Post Mortem which was mentioned here (and which I think you're likely to enjoy) features Gus McPherson whom you've met in Still Life.
The recommendations posted in this thread ought to keep you busy & obsessed for a while!  Black Dahlia alone is quite a bit of work)
I forgot my sig.

Tex Murphy is great too but it will be a chore to run on XP. Moment of Silence sort of a detective game too. Legacy: Dark Shadows is too. Runaway is good too. StillLiffe is good. DarkFall and Lights Out

(Followed by Laura Bow!)
All 12 games have been released within the past 5 years. All of them work on Windows XP, and range in price from $9.99-19.99 for one or several games bundled together. YOU get to be Nancy Drew and help her solve the mystery!
