So, let's have it...

I gave it a 5. It wasn't a bad game but not that memorable to me. I like interaction with other characters and a good story and this was more of a puzzle-fest.

Deleted UserI'm giving it an 8. Myst is always going to be controversial because of the new style of gameplay that it introduced to the genre as a dominant force, but I feel that this is a relatively fair evaluation. It didn't have the sheer design brilliance and pervasive backstory that Riven brought to the series, but it was an original and interesting game with an interesting collection of puzzles, some integrated into the environment better than others. In the end, Myst was a good game if you liked what it had to offer- not the most brilliant work of all time, not the scourge of humanity, but simply a game that tried something different and did it well.

This is tough. Sentimentality towards the game for how it reintroduced me to adventuring makes me want to give it a 10.

But if I ask myself "Would I rank it a 10 if some other game had been the one that got me back into adventures, and I played Myst for the first time today?" honestly, I have to say no.

Wish I could give it an 8.5, but I guess I'll have to make it an 8.

I gave it a 6. It had great scenery to look at, but after a time, I got bored with the lack of live interaction. As a newbie to adventure games back then, the puzzles were difficult for me as well.

I have good memories of Myst (as it came free with our computer), but i would crtainly not go back to play it today.

.

I happen to like adventure games of all kinds and have no doubt that Myst deserves a perfect 10 as the single most important title and as the original offering in the biggest ongoing franchise ever created for the genre. In fact, it was one of the most significant games ever made in any genre and did as much as any other to introduce millions more players (not to mention new talent, new investors and a whole new status) to our once little known hobby.

Myst might even merit a 10 plus a special gold star reserved for only a rare few landmark games that truly impacted the entire industry. These would include universally recognized titles like Doom, Civilization and Ultima / Ultima Online as the true pioneers in their respective genres that also created entire new markets for PC games.

Cheers,  Terry

Deleted UserI honestly don't know how I should rate Myst. In 1994, I was bored with Sierra and other 3rd-person fantasy games. I longed for something new, something different. Along came Myst. It swept me off my feet, I loved the breathtaking graphics, the mystery, the new type of puzzles.  It deserves a 10+ for that.

But now that I've played so many other kinds of adventures, it hasn't stood the test of time as well as, say,  Riven. So I'd better not rate it at all.

Here's the shocker - I never played Myst
.
But, I did play RealMyst (which I would give a 10 ). I'm not sure if it will be in a separate category, but just in case, I'll wait until then to vote.

I went for "haven't played", because I didn't finish it (and probably never will).

I was going to try to be totally objective and give it an 8, but then I thought to myself- self, you loved this game, you adored this game, not necessarily because it's the highest quality, icon of perfection adventure game ever made, but because it started a process that might not have occurred if it was never made. So, for being the first of a particular lineage that makes me continue to play these games I have to give it a 9 while at the same time using all the self-control I can muster to keep my mouse hand from clicking on 10!

The future ain't what it used to be!

Riven being my first game ever, followed by Myst, I don't have the same control as my friend SirDave.... I gave it a 10.  And I would give RealMyst a 10 also if it were listed.  These games are poetry in motion for me.  I'm still looking for that satisfaction in a new game that these ''original'' ones give.  I can dream, can't I ??????
Myst IV - Never finished it.  Got frustrated with it.&&Myst V - Did not finish it either.  Very disappointing.&&ATTWN - BORING!!! Never finished it.  Kept falling asleep.&&Paradise - So far .... not so good&&Voyage - Not on my favorite list

A 9.  Excellant puzzles and great variations in the worlds explored, but I wanted to know more about the sons and what caused them to turn against dad.  The games deserves a boost for being a leader.

What she said.  Except, in my case, Myst came before Riven, unless you count the partially completed Altered Destiny which was, in fact immediately displaced after my first glance at Achenar's bedroom in the Channelwood Age.
