But for rating polls, the option (Haven't played) are absolutelly unnecessary. Remember > We are here to RATE the game...and don't unrate it.

Don't interess anyone, if a person din't play the game.
The FOCUS..and the only one, is the score that persons who played Syberia...give to the game.

Haven't played = non-sense. :-/

The vote "Haven't played" is a placeholder for people who want to see the results without voting.

Enter Squilliam.

Squilliam: Wait! What if I want to see the results without voting? This poll is infringing on my rights!
Fickfack: Yeah! Down with polls!

Exeunt, with torches and pitchforks.

Doesn't matter if it's meant to be funny - as long as you're laughing.

I voted a 4.  Yes I did.
This game is not my kind of location for a game (too cold).
I don't like 3rd person.
Didn't like the story.  But then I'm not a story kind of player.
The puzzles were soooo so-so.
I still don't like people in my games.  At least not many people.

Now, back to some secluded tropical island adventure game.
Myst IV - Never finished it.  Got frustrated with it.&&Myst V - Did not finish it either.  Very disappointing.&&ATTWN - BORING!!! Never finished it.  Kept falling asleep.&&Paradise - So far .... not so good&&Voyage - Not on my favorite list

We'd better keep the haven't played it option because there are a lot of games I haven't played and if Pastor is going to spend the summer asking us to vote on games, I'll be excluded from a lot of activity.

I'm sure you wouldn't want to do that, would you Pastor?    [smiley=angel_smiley.gif]

Pastor - You created the poll....so it's up to you.....but, the option (haven't played) don't belongs to the question.

Imagine the 6th option:

POLL - Your opinion about Myst:

1) Excelent
2) Good
3) Medium
4) Bad
5) Very Bad
[color=Red]6) Sorry, but I never heard about this game

about the "not played" option being there... if the poll is not open to guests (and those polls shouldn't be imo), then you can see the results without voting by logging out and seeing the poll as a guest

I gave it an 8.  I agree with most of the criticisms of those who gave it only a 6 or 7, but I think the scenery was so spectacular, that it bumps it up a point or two.

I'm one of the plebeians that just got around to buying both Syberia I & II. My old Diamond Monster 3dfx Voodoo2 graphics accelerator card with 2X AGP with a 350Mhz processor just couldn't handle the first Syberia.

I waited to buy both Syberias until I had the proper system to play them (in which my current system is a little over-kill for either Syberias, with a BFG nVidea GeForce 6800GT OC as the resident graphics beast, running at 3.4 Ghz).

For example: Sentinel absolutely flew with this 6800GT OC card and I imagine the 3.4 GHz processor had a lot to do with it, too. Some of the best 3d work I have seen in an Adventure Game resides in Sentinel (although I became over awfully weary of Beni calling out for "
ormeuse". I laughed and imagined he was saying "dormouse"
.

In fact - I could have done completely without the humanoid 3d Dormeuse (Lordy, what a sparse and boring bunch of cutscenes those were).

Did I mention I don't like 3d humanoids in cutscenes?. Unnatural in appearance, precariously approaching the uncanny valley anomaly even as fluid and gracious the voice-acting was for the Dormeuse.

She was very pleasant to listen to (very good voice actually), but hard to look at. Threw me out of the game and felt so "tacked-on' and arbitrary.

"Beni' as protagonist: cringe-producing every time he expontificated and argued with the Dormeuse.

What off-putting exuberance Beni had, like he was cheerleader for a ra-ra High-School marching band or a young barker for the Aladdin Walt Disney World show before his voice-over job for Sentinel.

Anyway, I disgress. I'm sorry.

I am looking forward to playing both Syberias back-to-back on my new rig, and I hope the powers that be will allow me to get Kate Walker to high-tail it a little faster than what I've heard she does through the long stretches of walking through villages I've heard so much about.

But if she still walks slow, and the other pesky things I've heard about such as the "No need to go down there!" small dead-ends won't bother me much and I am ready for it. A leisurely stroll through an fabulous village can be so beautiful.

The Syberia games - although I enjoy 1st-person more - seem to be absolutely beautiful, and I place high marks on any game that even if the gameplay is slow with some repetition - I won't mind.

It seems to be a beautiful game with a very nice story, and I am going to play both Syberias soon.

And will get back to you and change my "Haven't Played" vote to my actual observations of the Syberia duet - when I get the chance.

P.S. the "Syberias" seem right up my alley; my cuppa - even if in 3rd person and inclusion of gratitious saucy language of the protagonist (Play: The Longest Journey).

We will see...

Please proofread your posts carefully to see if you any words out.

I gave it a 9 - grading it as an interactive story rather than a game.
It had a lot of atmosphere; the gameworld and characters were interesting. If I were rating it as a game I wouldn't rate it that high, but sometimes I enjoy interactive stories too. This is one of those rare times.
I liked the first Syberia much better than its sequel.

Even surprising myself, I gave it an 8 notwithstanding that simpering, obnoxious Momo, Kate's 'not needing to go down there' and her amazing ability to stuff all sorts of stuff into here shirt without changing her figure in the least bit!

I guess I just like the way Sokal designs his games, especially coming after Amerzone and the opening of Syberia is magical with that haunting march music. Yes, there are weaknesses, but I had a nice relaxed feeling playing it which is why I play these games to begin with.

The future ain't what it used to be!

Syberia I is great from beginning to ending (yes, I loved the end, it was open!).. 8 from me, because of some silly stuff going on and puzzles being pixelhunting with pixels the size of an oiltanker.

Syberia II nearled ruined Syberia I for me, so I've erased that from memory

.

I too gave Syberia a solid 8 because it is one of the most polished, artistically elegant games ever produced in any genre. It was also absolutely bug-free for me with nary a single technical glitch from beginning to end. The music was also wonderful, the writing was quite good and I enjoyed the story and characters very much.

The two points I deducted were because it was pretty short and the puzzles were not all that original. The difficulty scale had nothing to do with it though as Sokol and Microids stated from the beginning that they were not gearing it solely to the hard core AG fan and wanted the game to be reasonably accessible to average players. In that department, they simply did what they said they were going do and penalizing the game score for it seems unjustified.

Cheers,  Terry

Ditto... except I gave it an 8 because I very much enjoyed it.

2 cents worth:
1 - I vote to keep the "haven't played" vote as an option, because if it weren't there, I (for one) would vote just to see the results, and we risk having people vote a number even if they havent' played it, which invalidates the results.
2 - Love the poll placement idea, Val!!!

I think the "haven't played" option is good, because it shows how well-played the game is.  For example, we can see that a few people here haven't played Syberia, but a lot of people haven't played Myst IV.
...not to be confused with Keira Knightley

Definitely a solid 8 IMHO.  My wife and I typically prefer first-person, puzzle-oriented, solitary adventure games.  However, Syberia (and its sequel) have a special place in our list of favorite adventure games.

Benoit Sokal won our hearts with his first game Amerzone (which did happen to be a first-person, puzzle-oriented, solitary adventure game).  We were a little disappointed in the switch to third person in Syberia, but quickly got over it when we saw that the graphics and music got even more lush and atmospheric (sorry to regurgitate such overused cliches - but they do fit to the letter in this case).

The only negatives we can comment on are "No need need to go in there", whiny Oscar, and Kate's cellphone; all things they toned down (thankfully) in Syberia II.

Pretty great overall game.

I rated the game a solid Nine.  I should also make clear that this is an overall rating for both Syberias I + II; I think these are actually one game, but since the game was sold in two separate halves at two separate times, an artificial division was created.  It is my firm belief that had both Syberias been combined and sold as a single game, no-one would be noticing any changes in game style, graphics or anything else at or beyond the point where Kate opts against boarding the seaplane out of Aralbad and instead races back to get her train.  This is one game that I put in its entirety on my machine and play from the start at Valedilene to its conclusion with the meeting with the Mammoths in far Syberia every three or four months.

And keep the "Haven't Played" option.  There are several games I haven't played through, but which I have had on my machine long enough to have some comment on; see my comments on Myst IV and Grim Fandango, for example.  It seems like this is fairer to the game in question, I had issues which prevented me from advancing more than minimally into either of these games, yet I saw enough to have some kind of impressions and experience and thoughts to share.  When I get a modern computer, I will finish Myst IV, and then change my vote; alas!, unless they re-release Grim Fandango for Windows XP and with a point + click interface, this game will never be re-attempted by me.  Which is too bad because by all accounts its a great game, but whose interface renders it, for me at least, quite unplayable.  So another reason to keep the "Haven't Played It" option; I really don't want to give what is actually a good game a score of 1 (or -5, were this possible, such is my frustration with the controls!); the "Haven't Played" option seems fairer in these situations.

I gave it '9'. Found the 'puzzles' too easy. Would have made '10', otherwise.

***WARNING, SPOILERS***

I gave it a 2.

Terrible, terrible, terrible game in my opinion.

The story was unique, and it was clear that Sokal wanted the story and atmosphere to be at the forefront of the game. While his story would have been passable in a normal puzzle-based game, it was simply too shallow for Sokal's artistic intentions. It was also majorly weakened by its reliance on massive infodumps, like the lecture and the journal in the attic.

Furthermore, I'm sure Mr Sokal could've thought of a better vehicle for character development than getting the same cell phone call every fifteen minutes with the message, "Kate, this is someone back home with a trivial message about our hollow, impatient, materialistic lifestyle so that you become increasingly skeptical of our superficial ways." And with this blatant, sledgehammer method of character development, the saccharine ending where she shuns her previous life to follow her heart comes as no surprise.

To top it off, the puzzles were painfully easy, Kate walked too slow, and the game was extremely short.

The only thing that saves this game from being a '1' is the beautiful artwork, nice intro cutscene, and decent voice acting. But the game's pretty facade, in my opinion, should take a back seat to things like a great story, great puzzles, and characters that you care about.

However, I'm glad that other people did like it. More power to you.

I liked the game very much. The game and story I thought to be much better than Amerzone (Sokal's first game). The puzzles were maybe a bit easy but that kept the story flowing, and I thought the puzzles to be well integrated into the story.
