I suppose since I opened my big mouth, I might as well be the one to make the initial foray into the minefield of community rating. So we'll start with a game most likely everyone has played (though I myself have not, which is why I will not vote in this one).

In addition to voting, you can also post a mini-review. In fact, I'd love it if you would. Be as detailed or as brief as you want, but it's nice to hear an elaboration on a simple 1-10 rating. However, if I may beg one favor, let's keep this thread to just that: reviews. Please don't critique/respond to other people's reviews. This is not designed to be a discussion thread, and dissolving into a flame war will do nobody any good. You can always start up another thread for that.

Obviously this will be pretty informal; it is not a "definitive" anything. It is nothing more or less than the pooling of the wisdom (and ignorance) of the JA+ community. If it works, we can always start other, similar polls. In fact, I was originally going to do it on Myst IV, but I recognize the Myst series is probably a bit too debate-inspiring to start with.

Let's see if this works...

I voted 8. Syberia will be memorable for me because of the scenery/cut scenes and the story. These positives far outweighed the negatives - fairly easy challenges, a lot of back and forthing, and the unrewarding hot spots. For once you weren't saving the world. It is one of the few 3rd person games that I would rate this highly.

This is wonderful!

I'm thinking if we get tons of these polls, that we'll move them to the Members' Adventure Game Reviews section with a thread here that links to it or make a new section in the Member Arena just for adventure game ratings.

What do y'all think?

We can be heroes, just for one day.

i'd give it a 6... the game was a great experience, but provided no challenge whatsoever - it was like watching a good movie

btw, pastor, i think it's great that you took the initiative to start the game ratings! it's probably gonna lead to a whole new forum area!!!

You have gotten the attention of the mysterious lady. She turns to face you. Her face is devoid of any flesh. You are frozen with horror as she begins ripping your body into a bloody mess.

I have to agree with Aya.  I gave it a 6 as well.  Other than the fantastic graphics, the story never really gripped me and the puzzles weren't very deep.  It was the graphics that kept me engaged longer than the game would have, but in the end I still ended up quitting two-thirds of the way through.

Sounds good! A section like that with as many games as possible would be an interesting reference tool and a whole lot of fun to vote on.

Anyway, Syberia......Tough one. Syberia did nearly none of the things I look for in an adventure. And yet I was won over by its "feel", its design, artwork and music coming together to form one of the most charming games I had ever played. At the start I was a grouchy old skeptic; by the end of the game I was bowled over and wanted to see mammoths!

Guess I'll give it a "7".

Deleted UserI think the "haven't played" option should be eliminated. If members haven't played the game, they should simply refrain from voting in the poll until they do play the game. Plus, it makes the math much more difficult if you're trying to do percentages.

Oh, don't be a baby.

I put that in there so that people who haven't played can still see the results (which was kind of the reason for it in the first place, right?). The math is easy:

Multiply the ranking R by the number N of people voting for that ranking, then add all the resulting R-N combinations together, dividing the sum by the total number N(tot) voting.

See? Easy!

I wouldn't have rated Syberia 2 nearly that high but S1 was a great game.

Positive: Great graphics, lovely music, unique story concept.
Negative: Too much back and forth, screens that existed only for WALKING, lack of interaction with the environment.

As you can see, the negatives are greater than the positives.

I gave it 8.  My first 3rd person game.  It freaked me out at first, having to walk slowly everywhere but I soon got into it.  It's like being in a book, or a movie.

Very charming.  The puzzles were easy enough for beginners which was fine with me, my gameplay flowed without too much mental effort.

The story was original and the automatons were charming.  The graphics were lovely, very atmospheric.  it ended too soon of course but I simply enjoyed the whole experience.

Not in the same league as Riven but I think for it's own kind it is the epitome.   Such complaints as I did have related to the conversation tone of the heroine.  She sounded a bit rude sometimes.  However, taken as a whole, the game twinkled, it is a star and deservedly so.

Wish Anne were here.  She'd clobber anyone who said differently.

Gave it a 7...see what everyone else said.  I've already written a review, too.

Oh, and don't forget the crappy voice acting!
...not to be confused with Keira Knightley

I gave it a 7. I enjoyed it quite a lot but maybe because I hadn't played a decent new adventure in a long time.

Highs: Story, graphic, music
Lows: Lack of puzzles, empty screens with lots of running back and forth, some bad voice acting (Momo springs to mind), quite short game.

Seems there are more lows than highs but a good story is generally what I value most in an adventure game.

My concern is that under the current poll system people only get one vote, meaning that if they use their votes to say "I haven't played" in order to see the results, they won't have an opportunity to vote on the game in the future if they do play it.
The bit about math wasn't really one of my primary concerns.

Deleted UserAtmosphere and graphics were amazing. Gripping intro.

Terrible story with big holes in it. More a hodgepodge of unfunny and a bit childish mini-stories which are supposed to be "cute" or something. Didn't work for me.

I gave it a 5.

I gave it a 7. Very pretty, high production values, but far too short and easy.

The poll shouldn't have the option (haven't played), because when a person vote that option, in the future, when decide to play it, that person will be unable to rate the game, because already voted..and the polls don't admit two votes of the same person.

So please, Pastor - Exclude the option (Haven't played)

For me, Syberia has became one of my favorite adventure games in years.

I found the characters both unique and memorable, aswell as the development of the characters throughout the game.

The story had it's on little quirky comfortable side to it. It gave  me the feeling you get from opening a classic novel that was etched into your mind from childhood.

The only downside to it was a few scenes that felt dragged out, otherwise I would have gave it a higher score then a 9
.

Deleted UserI think you should take out the "Haven't played" option. The forum won't let you vote twice, so if I put that I haven't played the game, I won't be able to vote on it if I play it later! This is totally unaccep-

I think we need a new poll selection, right at the top:
