Status : Online | I gave it an 8 instead of 10 because of those action sequences, like the pumpkin patch with the crows and scarecrows, and at the end. I wasn't crazy about the voice acting either. Other than that, definitely replayable (many times I rate the quality of games I play based on replayability), and a classic!
If it weren't for the last minute... nothing would get done.

NOTE: Topic and poll was deleted in the big server change of '06.
Obviously, Sanitarium is (and has been) one of my all-time favorite Adventure Games (of course, I gave it a "10", and continue hoping that it one day may find a coveted position in the JA+ Hall of Fame.
Thank you, Pastor, for bringing this gem aforefront once again.
Please proofread your posts carefully to see if you any words out.

Status : Online | A definite 10. One of the most amazing games ever. Excellent puzzles and atmosphere and a remarkable story that could only be done in a game (most game scripts could be adapted for movies, and its refreshing to see something that really works with the game medium). Yeah, there were a couple of annoying action sequences, but it's a small part of the game and overall this is truly brilliant.

You have gotten the attention of the mysterious lady. She turns to face you. Her face is devoid of any flesh. You are frozen with horror as she begins ripping your body into a bloody mess.

It's one of my all-time greatest adventure games.
I loved the theme/atmosphere to it. The game had this great macbre feel all the way through it, espically in the "disfigured" kid town, probally my favorite part in the game. The characters aswell as the different enviroments, It nailed it perfectly for the most part.
I just felt at some times they ran dry a little bit (IE the "bug" puzzle).
Otherwise it would get a perfect 10 from me.

SPOILER I had to look at the walkthrough and to find that there was a lever. Man I didn't see that lever cause it was soooo small!!! SPOILER

The detraction for me was the action/dexterity parts. I needed a saved game to get through the maze, and I had a hard time with the end checkerboard sequence.

I could't do it for the life of me, but I really wanted to get to finish the game so I asked someone for a saved game after that point so I could continue. P.s. This exemplifies how much I suck at dexterity type actions.

To me, a maze is where everywhere looks the same, and there are dead ends. At least this, you could see the layout...

I was one of those who ran into the constant lockup problems, and it's a testament to how intriguing the game was that I kept going anyway!

If it had not been for the all-time great Grim Fandango, Sanitarium would have easily been my PC Adventure GOTY in 1998 - just ahead of The Journeyman Project 3: Legacy of Time.
As it was, I only gave it a 9 because there were a few rather sticky little places along the way I found a bit annoying and the limited voice acting for the main character was not on a par with everything else. Otherwise the game was superb in every department from the memorable use of haunting audio cues on the main option screen, the original story concept and wonderful opening cut scene to the various macabre settings, well polished artwork and integrated puzzles.
Cheers, Terry

There was also a coherent storyline and you had reasonably clear objectives. I detracted two points from a perfect ten, one for the action/dexterity sequences, which, though I thought unnecessary, weren't actually all that hard to complete, at least after a brief consultation with a walk-thru. And the other point knocked off was for the graphics; I played a recently re-issued edition of this game which has been updated for Windows XP, and it ran flawlessly, but they overlooked the opportunity to freshen up the graphics, they seemed to be of the technical quality of the time when the original game came out.

Just wish it could have been longer.

Having said that, I liked this game a lot (an , for the story (alway number one for me), for the setting and for the innovative way the gameplay unscrolled.
