The original question had nothing to do with psychological effects (aggressiveness, violence, etc.). I was asking a clearly documentable question--do action-oriented video games actually reduce physiological stress as the people who play them claim, or is that a myth? And if they do in fact reduce stress, does the stress reduction justify the temporary increase in stress during the actual game? I.e., does playing action games reduce your long-term health?

I believe that anything that forces you to sit at a PC for extremely long periods of time (instead of getting real exercise and especially if you have a bad diet) will eventually hurt your health. So as always, balance and moderation are the keys.

As for the immediate effects of playing action games on an emotional scale, I can only speak from my own experience and that is they do seem to help me replace negative feelings brought on by everyday stress with more postiive feelings. Of course I've never been tested before / during / after games for heartrate, blood pressure, etc.

Cheers,  Terry

I don't suppose any of us has one of those cheap home monitors for blood pressure/pulse? I'd really be interested in the results of an informal test!
Dyslexics wonder why there isn't a word that means the same thing as "cinnamon."

I don´t play too much violent games, but I love violent cartoons and live action movies, and it doesn´t make me violent either.

I am not religious at all but I believe the same thing.  I have  played games like Postal 2 and it bothers me to see some of this stuff that some kids are into. We tell our kids this is not real but we always wonder if they are really listening.  One of the reasons I hate consoles is because some parents throw one at there kids and tell them to go play and the kids play this stuff with no one knowing what they are doing.  There are a few good games for these machines but a lot of parents have no idea what they are letting there kids play on them and don't try to get into the games or even look at them. I wouldn't say it's the console itself but parents really need to pay more attention to there kids and what they are doing these days.  Games with a little bit of vilence wouldn't be so bad but a lot of them now days go way too far and have nothing else in them.  I don't know why but I think girls have a better idea of what makes a good game and don't seem to go for so much vilence in there games.  Maybe woman whould be making these games. It is very hard to tell your kids that they can't have a game that all there friends are playing so the only thing you can do is sit down with them and make sure they are not getting any wrong ideas from it.
Games are a little like movies. I like horror movies but when they just start slicing up people or killing with no real plot I won't watch them ether.  It's like everything else everyone tries to go one step farther until they make a real mess out of things.

True. Most children who have constant access to video games in the comfort of their own homes have had little or no real-life experience on the streets. We also tell them that art imitates life and they see a continual stream of very bad news via every possible media outlet - all pointing to the same awful conclusion that the big bad world "out there" (the one they have yet to experience entirely on their own) is overflowing with ultra violent, evil, greedy, thoughtless people who seemingly go around lying, cheating, manipulating, terrorizing, robbing, raping and murdering at will.

If one examines the primary sources of worldy impressions that kids are exposed to these days (the highly sensationalized news media on TV, the web, etc. as well as an endless stream of ultra violent movies, shows and games) and add to them further reinforcement by equally impressionable young peers, is there any wonder why so many have a rather dim view of the human race in general?

When I was growing up in America we had visible signs of serious crime, daily news of war, reports on terrible human conditions here and abroad, stories about extreme racism and all the rest - in addition to a certain amount of violence in TV shows, in films, in contact sports and in various other places. But we also had a very healthy balance of good stuff at almost every level. Our exposure to the ugly side of life was therefore severely limited by comparison and positive influences were stressed more often by parents, teachers, famous role models, etc.

I happen to believe that the balance of perspectives I knew as a child was a great deal more accurate for forming a proper overall opinion on human beings and how to act in real life. Now it seems as if negative things are stressed, sensationalized and even glorified to the point that we are seeing an unhealthy, unrealistic set of impressions being passed onto kids who in turn are not being shown enough of the good things to balance it all out.

To a large degree, I also think that our ever faster life style has been a major contributing factor with TV, games, etc. servng too often as surrogate parents / babysitters. Super high divorce rates, families with two very busy, stressed-out working parents, declining standards in public schools, bad diets, bad exercise habits and an addictive level of consumerism have combined with all the above to result in a generally unhealthy environment in which to raise kids.

The perception these days is that it is simply too dangerous to just let kids go out and play unsupervised. So more and more (often absentee) parents employ TV, games and other artificial devices to occupy their children the bulk of their formative years. And when those convenient, time saving electronic babysitters are showing a steady stream of violence, greed, sexual depravity and more, what lessons do we think all those children are going to learn?

Cheers,  Terry

Blue beneath us, Blue above us,
Pounding and grinding- teeth clentched,
Bad Boy, Bad Boy-
You played that game and lost a life. Lost a life.
Get another? Need a life? Got a life?
Big Bad World out there! Need to get out more?
But they can zoom out and look down to us, like ants.
Wherever you are.
Like ants they see down to us.
Spinning on this rock. Spinning.
We feel scared. We feel afraid.
You wouldn't leave your front door.
And wipe your feet on the way out.

Where is that poem from?
What is the blue in "Blue beneath us, Blue above us" referring to?
(just curious)
