I heard Warners is planning to release the movies separately soon though. Would be good, I can buy them one at the time then. Thought of one other classic film noir: Key Largo. Very good one as well! I haven't actually seen Welles The Trial, planning to do so soon though. German expressionistic films from the 20s are definitely something to behold! Too bad so little of them are available on dvd at the moment. Would love to see the classic Das Kabinet des Doktor Caligari. Supposedly one of the absolute masterpieces of silent cinema. It was released about a two months ago with little to no promotion and only in some obscure small theaters. When I heard it was on release it had actually already been taken out of circulation. Grrr! :'( So, Disney may have its disadvantages, but at least it knows how to please dvd fans and how to promote their films for cinema releases. They did the same with Bourne Identity with director Doug Liman, and now with the sequel Bourne Supremacy with director Paul Greengrass. I wonder who they will ask for the third part in the franchise. |

MarkGuild Master![]() ![]() Posts : 3803 Joined: 10 OCT 2002 Location: US, Georgia Status : Offline | Just saw Batman Begins Sunday evening, and enjoyed it very much. The night before, I had a sleepness night and rented El Maquinista (The Machinist). Not a smart move, considering I had to be at church at 8:00 A.M. I had no idea Christian Bale had lost 63-odd pounds for this movie, and after seeing The Machinist, I tossed and turned all night. Do not see this movie to try and fall asleep by. It was an insomniac's worst nightmare, and The Machinist still haunts me. After seeing The Machinist, I had to go see Batman Begins just to make sure Christian was all right. He was, and I highly recommend Batman Begins. Michal and Wimli: I have seen two of the three Studio Ghibli DVD releases (have yet to see Porco Rosso). I really liked Neko no ongaeshi (The Cat Returns), and laughed anytime my old favorite actor Peter Boyle (as Muta, a very large cat) said anything. By the way: Miyazaki didn't direct The Cat Returns, Hiroyuki Morita did. And, of course, in The Cat Returns, "The Cat King" is voiced by no less than our old friend, Gabriel Knight 3 voice-over talent (ahem) Tim Curry. That man is great in this, but really...if you only knew how bad his "Southern" accent really is... I usually watch the Studio Ghibli films (or any other "foreign" - non-English - film) in the original language with English subtitles, but in this case, the English voice-over was done extremely well. I loved Nausicaa, too, and can't wait to see Porco Rosso. Another thing: Disney is offering a free DVD if you buy all three. I bought all three, sent in the proof-of-purchase things they needed, and two weeks later, I had a free (free, well...$1.99 USD for shipping) DVD of Spirited Away, which I did not have on DVD, only on VHS tape. I think the offer is good through the summer or longer. Howl's Moving Castle played here a week or so ago (I'm in Georgia, USA) and I can't find it now at the theaters. My usual film-going friend for these kinds of movies didn't want to go. I should have gone anyway, and next time I'll just go by myself, dammit. :-/ Please proofread your posts carefully to see if you any words out. |

The last movie I saw was Sin City...... and, taking the words of one of the main characters....."Hell of a way to end a day!".... great movie IF you take in account the following: -you like the whole Noir feeling -you like the whole black&white -you aren't offend by violence -you pay attention to the details and you can see how the 3 stories work with each others -you realize that the stories are from a comic book....so... yes, its perfectly possible for a guy to be beaten by a car 4 times and still behave as if nothing hit him! I won't say much, I'll just say that if like movies, go see it....if you like comics, what are you wainting for? Christmas? |

Very moving movie: i think it's the best performance for John Travolta since Pulp Fiction. Superb acting and atmosphere... Man, i love New Orleans... This is the kind of movie i would like to watch over and over. I'll put it besides The Station Agent and The Straight Story... |

Add that to the horrible selection (12 screens, but 4 are generic action movie, 3 are generic comedy, etc.) and pricey snacks, and I usually stick to second-run theatres. This is probably another thread, but I find people to be more rude nowadays than ever before, as if being born in Western civilization automatically gives them an entitlement of being egotistical. (When our biggest modern celebrity is Paris Hilton, that's understandable). I find this clearly evident in movie theatres, from heckling, incessant chatting, cellphone ringing, or a plethera of other problems, my patience wears thin. Although it's a bit like Cinderella but with a new twist. Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou: Great movie. I realized that the actors in that movie had to act a bit stiff. It's as if they're face couldn't be stretched for a full expression. What an odd movie yet funny. Odd for the stiffness. It's like watching dolls act. Maybe that's what makes the movie interesting. I loved the modelled ship! Oh man, they built a ship just for the entire movie! It looks like a doll house. I find this clearly evident in movie theatres, from heckling, incessant chatting, cellphone ringing, or a plethera of other problems, my patience wears thin. Yes you're right and I would like to highlight BABIES! Why do they bring they're BABIES! Nowadays I just go to the cinema when there's a really really really good show. Otherwise, I'll just buy DVD and watch it at home. Still busy being a mom && |

In the past couple of days, I've seen "Team America", "ark City" and "Velvet Goldmine". In the past few weeks, I've seen:

USA) has several good multiplex alternatives. Most are alt/indy films, but there's one or two that show blockbuster films that are not multiplex mall-centric endeavors. Even then, they can be some work... long lines and even not getting in to an early engagement unless you reserved tickets via the web well in advance (don't hope to just show up and get a ticket). But a full theater experience (when I find time) is still worth it, for some films. Perhaps there's one of these near you worth checking out. Speck |

They usually play indie or foriegn flicks that don't get coverage elsewhere. For instance, I saw Man on the Train there. The popcorn is fantastic and the seats are comfortable, but occasionally you still get the "bad" audience. I guess that's what it comes down to, is that the amount of great theatre experiences I've had have become trumped with frustrating ones. Usually not too busy unless one of the films they booked a month in advance becomes a cult hit by the time it shows (like Crouching Tiger or something). We also have one called the Mayfair which used to be a great second-run theatre where you payed a one movie price, saw a double-feature, and usually they at least kind of matched. (My first experience when I moved up here was The Big Lebowski/Fear And Loathing In Las Vegas, and my last experience was Kill Bill 1/2) However, ownership has been changing hands constantly and I haven't felt as attracted to going as I used to. Maybe I'm just getting old. TechnoSpikePrivate Detective![]() Posts : 581 Joined: 26 APR 2005 Location: PT Status : Offline | Ahh....now I know what the League of Gentlemen is...I think....isn't it that comic series where there's an old couple that has a shop ("What's all this shouting? We want no trouble here! This is a local shop, for local people!"...is that it? And sadly Wolfboy, Alan Moore doesn't have the control on to say if a movie based (even if "scarcely" based) can or not be made....Constantine was made (he invented the main character, John Constantine, a hell of a bastard ), From Hell has made (based on a comic about Jack the Ripper, if not mistaken), V for Vendetta is being made (lets hope it's not a complete stupidity, but I don't have high hopes), Watchmen was being made....unfortunally, it seems that a curse was cast on the movies adapation of his work, which is a shame, since I think he is one of the best writers of nowadays (his V for Vendetta was absolutely excelent!)... Moore choose (in the Constantine case, the others I'm not so sure) to not take credits for the use of the character, and passed the royalties for the other artists that worked with him. |

Very emotional movie and Tea Leoni knows how to be a hysterical lady. Pheew!! Now that's one irritating character! As for Adam Sandler, he just acts like Adam Sandler every time I see his movie. Don't know why. : Well, at least in this movie he's the smooth calm husband but in the end I got to hear him shout. Just like in any other of his movies. I could feel the bond with Christina and Flora was very strong. It portays what a single mother would do for the sake of her daughter even if it hurts her daughter and also the mother herself. It's makes me feel how hard it is to make your own decision when there's nobody to help you in a foreign land. The ending got me thinking on what happened to Flora and her daughter after that...
