They seem to be much shorter, and they lack the creative detail that used to flourish in the good ol' days. So, let's talk about the classics. One of the great ones is Zork Nemesis. Have you played it, Kiru?

Kiru--you call those classics? Anything with pictures is new-fangled in my book! Bring back the REAL classics! Zork, Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, Pirate Adventure!
Okay, I'm not really an old fart. I just play one on TV...

No, I haven't, but I've played the original Zork.
I read the review on Just Adventure and I got the impression the graphics are similiar to Pandora Directive.
I enjoyed Pandora Directive very much, is Zork Nemesis like it with a Zorkian-feel?

I've played the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy and I thought it was very funny!
What's the Pirate Adventure! like? Do you play as a pirate or are you a captive on a pirate ship?
I love games that feature pirates (Monkey Island, Lost in Time).

I've never played PD, but I can tell you that the Zorkian humor is quite subdued in Nemesis. It's there, and it's a hoot when it pops up, but it isn't nearly as ubiquitous as in the other Zork games.

But I do play new games to see if they will be a favorite ''old one'' in a few years. I research the new ones very carefully before buying.  on't need any more stinkers.

That sounds interesting. I think I might buy it if I found it somewhere.
Btw, what's the Pirates Adventure! game like? It sounds very interesting.

Wow, I do that all the time. Are there any classics that you'd recommend?

I should say that I'm thinking of the Pirate Adventure game that came out for the Texas Instruments 99-4/A, so I'm not sure if it's the same as the classic "Pirate Adventure" that others know. But the one I'm thinking of has you as fighting against the pirates (if I remember right--it has been SO long ago!). All I can remember now are two things: (1) you could only use two-word commands, but each word could be abbreviated to three letters; (2) at one point, your job is to collect parts of a ship to build one of your own--and you have to wait until the tide is going out to sail it.
Sorry I couldn't be of more help on that one, Kiru. I'm sure others have played it. Help us out, folks!

A few upcoming projects have promise to have good gameplay so don't forget to hunt the gems out and ignore the rubbish.

That kind of thoughtless, acerbic, spiteful comment has no business in a thread like this CS. It serves no purpose other than to incite hard feelings and it clearly demonstrates bad intentions on your part, while adding exactly nothing of any value to the discussion at hand.
In other words, it is malicious trolling in the purest sense of the word.
Regarding the actual subject of this thread, we have at least as many discussions about classic AGs as new ones - perhaps even more when you consider the many all-time best / worst polls and frequent requests for getting older titles to run on newer systems. The history of gaming is also talked about regularly and many forum members here have played all the golden oldies on various systems dating back to the first text adventures and the earliest graphical versions.
Cheers, Terry

I guess I just got the impression that people aren't interested in old adventure games because most of the posts on the first page seem to be about the new ones.
So what golden oldies have you played and are there any you'd recommend?

I have to admit to being a bit of a technojunkie, at least as far as pure AGs go. The better the graphics and the interface, the happier I am. Granted, it's not the only thing, and a good storyline with decent puzzles will overcome it (see Other Worlds). So while text adventures bring back fond memories, I just don't know if I'll ever go back.

But speaking of malicious trolls, a couple of the old Kings Quest games have them, and Discworld Noir features a really nasty one in an infamously lame puzzle that has sadly been implemented in more than one adventure game since.

You listed a couple of the best classic-style AG series from the 1980's and 1990's (King's Quest and Monkey Island), so I assume your looking for PC titles from that general era.
In no particular order, a few that I really enjoyed (for various reasons) include:
The Gabriel Knight Series
The Journeyman Project Series
The Tex Murphy Series
Broken Sword 1 & 2 (also #3 but it's quite new)
Zork Nemesis
Shivers 1 & 2
Amber: Journeys Beyond
The Blackstone Chronicles
From LucasArts - Day of the Tentacle, Full Throttle, Sam & Max Hit The Road, The Dig and Grim Fandango
Sanitarium
Black Dahlia
Nightlong: Union City Conspiracy
Blade Runner
The Little Big Adventure 1 & 2 (a.k.a. Relentless and Twinsen's Odyssey) which were action-adventures but still very good
Outcast (also action-adventure but excellent)
The problem these days is finding legal copies in good condition and getting them to run properly on newer systems. But LucasArts still sells many of their classics and we have a good used game trading forum here at JA+. There is also Ebay and Amazon.com often sells used games. GoGamer.com still has some slightly older AGs for sale too. I have also had good luck at my local Half-Priced Books store which often has older PC titles for a fair price.
For older DOS based games that run too fast on modern systems you can try a free utility like CPU Killer and there is a very good x86 emulator called DOS Box that can be downloaded for free. Some of our forum members have also posted detailed workarounds and links to other web sources for getting past well known bugs.
Cheers, Terry
