Riddle of Master Lu... :'( I want that back. One of the best. Betje, if you didn't enjoy it you didn't play it yet.
@JM Does 1893 really have FMV? I thought it's pure IF. ???

I played some of it. Years ago. Liked it, but very difficult. Got a new computer, got distracted, uninstalled it. Later. Wanted to play it again, stupid game refused to install. Don't know what to do. Lazy. Still on shelf.
No, 1893 doesn't have FMV, cause the M stands for Moving. Same goes for Blackstone Chronicles, only photo's. And Capri. He's right about Schizm and Amber, but Psychic Detective, Dracula Unleashed and Point of View are interactive movies. Callahan's, Cracking the conspiracy, Mean Streets? Don't remember any FMV. Some non-adventures... hm... don't know about the rest.
PS: I interpreted FMV as real people, live actors.

The dev community comments I have read usually define the Full Motion Video category to be games that use FMV extensively. These can involve real actors and/or computer created visuals. Typical formats include video streams such as AVI and MPEG.
In other words, there is no requirement that live actors be used at all.
Cheers, Terry

True. But most gamers associate FMV with real people instead of handdrawn or computer-generated characters. When someone wants to know about FMV adventures, I bet they're not thinking of filmed sequences.

Little pics in the corner? I don't know what you mean. I have the game. It's IF with black-and-white photographs of the world fair in 1893.

When i got into the game, the "world" you go into was woeful. Really dodgy pologon obects you'd expect on a commodore 64. But i gave it a chance, thinking theres more to a game than graphics.. then i tried to go outside- the character wouldn't go outside until i had made him a cup of tea! -stuff that

As to whether FMV should have live actors in it, I'd say it has to otherwise it shouldn't be called that. Just having cutscenes/cinematics isn't enough. Real actors on real sets or in rendered backgrounds equals FMV to me (and yes motion is important! Being able to use real people was what drew me to it in the first place.

There were a couple of flops and no one could see that FMV was not the reason and all they saw was the money the was lost. There are ways to use FMV without spending fortunes and I am sure they could be found easily. 3D is better for action games but I don't feel it works good for adventures. Old style adventures are basicly interactive movies and movies need actors. Sierra had the right idea games like GK2 and Phantasmagoria but in those days the computers just didn't have to power to do them right. This is not the case now. Tex Murphy UAKM and PD where also great examples of what could be done with FMV but there again the computers of those days were not up to it. Just think if one of those old game was remade now in FMV what it would look like on our new fast computers with dvd readers. I think a good game engine made specificly for hadling FMV clips would solve all the problems and make it all easy again. There will always be a place for 3d adventure games too but they will never be good at doing games that deal with real life situations and real peaple.

I'm a sucker for games with real people too, but I don't think FMV will ever be back.

They may....with DVD compression and system specs the way they are, a person could do a really decent FMV game. Assuming anyone wanted to of course.

A lot of the charators looked like they were pasted on a drawn screen but I got used to the look because I liked the story. I am looking forword to the next one because I think the new engine may fix all of that and if it has as good a story it will be perfect. I found the dvd version worked a lot better for me if you havn't tried it.
