Heyyy everyone -
I was just trying to think of some random topic I could post and this is what I came up with.  What do y'all think of songs in adventure games?  Songs with actual vocals, that is.  I rather enjoy them...if they are done right.  Some of my favorites include "Girl in the Tower" from KQ6, "Take a Stand" from Phantasmagorie, "Rage" from Phantasmagoria 2, and I enjoyed all the songs from Shivers 2.

And can anyone explain to me what signifigance the song "Happiness is an Inside Job" has to do with the plot of Broken Sword 2?  It was played during the credits but it seemed to be totally un-related to the story...

Great forum, by the way.

I don't remember either song from the Phantasmagoria games.. when did they play during the games?

And yeah, the bizarre pop-reggae tune from Broken Sword 2 kinda made me turn off my speakers. Gwah.

My favourate swongs? Possibly the occasional track from Omikron: Nomad Soul. It's not a pure adventure game, but it has the best soundtrack from any video game ever, in the entire history of video games. Well, I'm a Bowie fan

I agree 100% with Wolfboy.  Omikron: The Nomad Soul had the best soundtrack ever.  In the game you would find these flyers advertising "The Dreamers" playing in a certain bar at a certain time.  If you went you could watch the virtual characters (who all look alot like Bowie and company) play songs from his "Hours" album.  How cool is that!

I've since lost the game to a roomate, but bought the album and it is one of my favourites.

Pandora Directive had a pretty good blues singer at the end credits.

It's not as if I ever actually DID anything with that game except from go to the bar and listen to it

If I remember right, the model of the main vocalist does have Bowie's face. But I'm not 100% sure on it. Nevertheless, the fact that it's a game that had live concerts in it was amazing.

And the Opera from GK2, don't forget that. Composed, written, and directed just for the game. The two arias were written, including the music and vocals, and performed. I loved it. It added so much to the game, after spending so much time searching for the missing Wagner Opera, to see it being performed like that. Wow.

The two songs from Phatasmagoria were both played during the end credits.

Ahhh how could I forget the GK2 opera!?  That was...amazing.  I remember thinking how incredible the whole last chapter of that game was.  I was so used to playing games where the endings were half-a*sed and rushed.  It was so refreshing to have an ending that seemed to be another half of the enitire game.  There was so much detail and work put into it.  And now I am rambling.

The song from the intro to Full Throttle also rocks my socks.

How about the soundtrack for Faust! Best I *ever* heard in a game. If you're into classical, Ring has pretty impressive music too!

Wolfboy, you're right the lead singer of the band was Bowie.

...God now you've gone and made me want to go play Nomad Soul again
(if I can get it to run on my PC of course)

Not just the opening title song from Full Throttle, but all of the tunes in that game by The Gone Jackals. I love the closing credits of Full Throttle. That and The Pandora Directive are probably the only games I've looked at the full closing credits to.

And he's stealing all my change,
His stare is blank and glassy,
I suspect that he's deranged...

Surely the best song in an adventure game ever.

I think also that the GK2 opera is the greatest music created especially for an adventure game. I also liked the russian opera song in Syberia that Helena is singing.

I remember the phantasmagoria song and I thought that it was cool that it had a real song in the credits like in a movie.

But don't forget that Phantasmagoria had also that song (I think it was called consumite furore or something like that) in the trailer and in some parts in the game that was a really good horror theme. It reminded me carmina burana by Karl Orff.

My favourite song from any adventure game to date is Far, far away from my heart by Presence. Which came from the game Faust, during the closing credits I believe.

I don't know what it is about the song...I just love it!

I kinda liked the song in Discworld II. I forget the name but it was a typical Eric Idle song.

And as someone else mentioned, the opera sequence in GK2 (which is a song if we stretch the definition just a little bit) was one of the best musical pieces in an adventure (or any other game for that matter) ever.
I forgot my sig.

The best song with actual vocals in an adventure game has to be the Welcome to the Zoo song sung by the topiary creatures in Putt-Putt Saves the Zoo.  If you've heard it, I doubt you can ever forget it.

Without vocals, all the music from Grim Fandango which I still listen to all the time.  Being the only game from which I regularly listen to the music outside the game, it must be the best.

I liked that song in Discworld Noir when you first walked into the Octarine Parrot, and Sapphire was singing.

I'm playing Runaway right now, and that theme song is stuck in my mind. It's pretty catchy.

I just loved the beautiful Irish melodies sung by one of the main characters (Abi)

I'm so glad you said that colpet, I experienced the same thing when I played Runaway. I was humming that tune everywhere I went.

This is a great soundtrack.
Fits like a glove and sounds really good too. I was wondering, if anyone is going to mention it

As odd as that song may have seemed, it sure fit better than that weird rock song at the end of BS3 did.

Even though it's very short, I love the piece of music we hear Helena Romanski sing in Syberia.

Hey, I'm playing Runaway right now too (still stuck in Chapter 4!  ???)  Yep, the theme song's still playing in my mind this week thanks to Lula in Chapter 3!

Other infectious songs that I've replayed over and over (in my mind and in a game!) include:

Compañeros from Grim Fandango (the song played by the mariachi band right at the end when the credits start)

Any version of the Monkey Island Theme (especially from MI2 and CMI!), Stan's Theme or LeChuck's Theme and not surprisingly, A Pirate I Was Meant to Be!!! (

That's Death from Discworld 2 (also Casanonda's short and annoying song 'I'm in the mood for love)

Ah, and the little underwater guy's song from Grim Fandango 'this little light of mine, I'm gonna let it shine'...

oh, and the song from Syberia is a well known one. Also the music from komkolzgrad, it's also taken from a russian song (which has been turned into a children's song where I live and had me rather confused when I heard the music for the first time).
