Status : Offline | What sound card do you have? Do you have an AWE? You may want to choose your sound card manually if the automatic detection isn't choosing the correct one. Try the settings for an SB16 if there is no option for an AWE card (if what you have is the AWE card).
Here's an extract from a Readme that came with one of the Ripper patches.
*Sound Problems* When you first run the SETUP program, the game attempts to load the appropriate drivers for your sound card. As good as it is, it may make a mistake. Check to see what your particular sound card is compatible with, and also check the I/O PORT, IRQ, and DMA settings. This information can be found in the documentation that came with your sound card/computer. Try manually loading this information in the setup program.
In Windows '95, if the game is detecting your settings incorrectly, try using DOS mode to set up the parameters. From the Windows desktop, click on START, then SHUTDOWN, then RESTART IN MS-DOS MODE. Change to the directory where you have Ripper installed (example: C:\RIPPER) and then run the setup program.

There are two patches for Ripper. The version 1.03 patch is hard to find these days. The version 1.05 patch is found at Patches-Scrolls

Some people who weren't able to get Ripper to work using the 1.05 patch had success with the 1.03 patch (which is larger).
The instructions in the paper manual were pretty basic and it sounds like you've already figured out what they were by yourself. The only troubleshooting suggestions in the paper manual involved using the bootdisk-making program on the CD if you were getting an out-of-memory error.
You should try to get the patch though.
