Status : Online | Let's see if I can come up with a couple of facts about Clermont-Ferrand (I don't actually live there, but I study in that town, and that will make my task a bit easier).
1) For starters: the town is about as much in the centre of France as you can get. It is located in Auvergne proper, in the northern part of the Massif Central, and is very close to the geographical centre of France, if you exclude Corsica. With Corsica, the centre of France is a bit to the South of the town.
2) For Anne: Clermont-Ferrand is one of the places farthest east that fell under English dominion: after Eleanor's marriage with Henry II, Auvergne proper became part of Henry's holdings. I am not sure if Calais isn't more to the east though. At any rate, the English never got a French town more inland.
3) For the "old buildings" thread: Clermont-Ferrand is home to a building that look a long, long time to complete: the Cathedral took no less than 654 years to build. It was started in 1248, was more or less complete circa 1350, but the Hundred Years War disrupted work on the building. The building was finished in the late 19th century, following the plans of the original architect (or so they say).
4) For the geologists: the town is famous for its volcanic stone, and many of the older buildings have been built with it. I wish I had decent photos to show, but I couldn't come up with a clear view of any of the buildings on the internet. I will try harder, I promise.
5) For the walkers: Clermont-Ferrand could be called "A city *against* a hill". While the oldest part of the city seems to have been built atop a hill, the town has spread around... in other words, if you want to go anywhere in town, you will likely have some climbing to do, as the town isn't exactly flat.
6) For the film-makers: The city is only several kilometers away from a dormant (or so they say) volcan, le Puy-de-Dôme. It shouldn't concern anyone though: if the volcan does wake up, it should be able to reach places twenty or thirty kilometers away without trouble, so being so close shouldn't matter.
7) For the historians: Clermont-Ferrand might be the only town in the world with a statue of Vercingétorix (a famous Gallic leader, if you haven't read Asterix recently), an "Avenue Vercingétorix", and a "Boulevard Gergovia" (Gergovia is a Gallic victory against the Romans, by opposition to Alésia).
For trivia games: Clermont-Ferrand also prides itself in being the hometown of Blaise Pascal, a French scientist and philosopher among other things. There are quite a few places called Blaise Pascal around town, including my university. Not too exciting, but I am running out of inspiration.
9) For the politicians: Clermont-Ferrand is also the "home" of Valéry Giscard d'Estaing, the only well-known politician to be born in the town. He was president of France between 1974 and 1981, and incidentally our youngest president ever (he was 48-year-old). He wasn't born in the area though, but I believe his family comes from here.
10) For the self-centered: Well, I study there, so that's reason enough to go to Clermont-Ferrand. Well, my real tenth fact will be that the town is one of the northernmost part of France that could be considered occitan: the lines between the Northern tongue ("Langue d'Oïl" and the Southern tongue ("Langue d'Oc" are a bit to the north of the town. Of course, Auvergne is not exactly in the South either, and definitively not Provence.
Voilà! Coming up with ten different facts wasn't the easiest thing in the world, but at least I tried. And if you aren't nice, I will do it again with the town where I am actually living in.

On another note, I love heraldry and the like... looking at the coats of arms at any rate, as actually *understanding* them is just another way of getting headaches galore. The coat of arms (of sorts) of Auvergne is: Not the most original in the world though.
Looks like the picture doesn't work. I will try to upload it somewhere else to see... not really worth the trouble for just a coat of arms, but no computer has challenged me and lived to tell the tale. Now it works fine, but it's too big. Grr.

Oh, we've got rivers with all kinds of odd names. Rivers like the Monongahela, Susquehanna, and Youghiogheny, for starters. Can't say why a river would catch fire, though. Oil spill? Some other pollution?
This stuff has been really interesting to read, folks. Almost makes me wish I lived in a town to do one of these. I've spent most of my life living in the country. And the closest town is too small -- the only thing I can think to say about it is that it's got a bakery with some of the best donuts ever! Tasty, but that's about it.
Maybe I'll have to do one on the county seat, Lancaster. Plenty of history there.

| Deleted User | Interesting facts about Seattle, Washington, USA:
- Grunge music is now dead
- We got us a Space Needle
- It's green... it might have someting to do with rain
- We're currently looking at a major drought for this summer. Go figure
- It's in the 'Ring of Fire'. We got earthquakes, we got volcanos, and they rock (heh, heh... I crack myself up).
- The Puget Sound, the Cascade Mountain range, the Olympic Penninsula... it's really an amazing area, nature wise.
- It's really a cool, pretty hip town. Some will say that we have a long ways to go before we're NY, LA, wudevah. I like to say that we haven't outgrown our britches yet, but have some great dining, music and other varied recreation
- However, the cost of living is pretty high per capita.
- Check it out: we have a lot of bridges. Some of them even float.
- It's a short drive to the state of Canada. Vancouver, BC is really an amazing city.

There used to be a tank station shop, a pub in the forest and a very little private library, but they are all closed now.
