Hello all, I am fairly new to the realm of adventure games and I was wondering if anybody would care to point out some games that they think would be a worthwhile and fun endeavor for me.  Currently, I am playing Riven with two of my close friends after we made short work of Myst.  We are planning on continuing on to Exile and Revelation as soon as we finish Riven, but are not sure what we should play after that.  I have read mixed reviews of Uru, so I am unsure if we should go into that or not.  If anybody has an opinion on Uru, please let me know.  I know that Schizm and Syberia are two popular adventure games, but I have tried them both and was not too thrilled.  Are there more games out there like the Myst series that have lots of difficult but logical puzzles as well as beautiful scenery?  Thanks for any guidance you can give me.

Hi, welcome to the forums!

I'm not a fan of Myst-like first-person games myself, but one I did like was Journeyman Project 3.  It's made by the same people as Myst and it's about time travel.  It involves a completely different type of puzzles to Myst, but I found them quite challenging and they're definitely logical.

Cool, I'll definitely look into that one, thanks for the suggestion.  How is the story?  Is it important to have played the first two games to have the best understanding of this one, or does it stand alone?  I am a pretty big fan of games that have time travel in them, so hopefully this one is fun.  I'll check out the reviews.  Any other suggestions?

BD Bick, have you played Zork Nemesis?  It's about the same difficulty as Myst, and you usually hear the two mentioned in the same sentence. In fact, some people prefer it to Myst.  Puzzles are similar most of the time, and the game is rather high in the difficulty scale (at least two of the puzzles are sound related!).  The only difference is that you have to pay close attention to the story bits, because they might be useful later on.

Very atmospheric, it's beginning to show it's age but it still is rather nice to look at, music is fantastic.  The only catch is that you may need to use a slowdown utility when playing it.

You don't need to play any of the other Zork games to play the game.  There just might be the odd inconsequential reference that you don't get, but it won't interfer with the gameplay.  Just be warned that it is a little dark in tone.  Not overtly graphic or anything, but there are some creepy parts.

The other plus is it was a huge best-seller when it came out, so you can get it a used copy for close to chump change on sites like ebay.

There's no need to have played the first 2 Journeyman games, I haven't (I can't find them).  It explains the story so far at the beginning of the game.

kuddles - No, I have not tried Zork Nemesis, but I have seen it referred to a lot in adventure game reviews, so that sounds promising.  I'm glad to hear it compared to Myst, as I have loved Myst and Riven.  Thanks for the suggestion.

chris156 - Okay, thats good to hear.  I can't stand not knowing whats going on in the story when I play a sequel first.  Thanks.

I really liked Uru, but the reviews are right - it's not similar to the other games in the Myst series, and I think I may be in the minory of people who liked it.  But the scenery was absolutely stunning, either way.

Maybe try Aura, too... it's not as good as the Myst series, but the scenery and puzzles are similar in feel.  It's short, but also a cheap game, so it may be worth the $$.  I also loved Schizm 2 - it's not quite the same as Schizm 1 and I found that I liked it much more than #1.  I liked Morpheus, too, but I'm not sure if wandering around an abandoned ship is what you'd consider "beautiful scenery."

I second the vote for Journeyman Project 3 and Zork Nemesis, though - both are excellent games with fabulous puzzles.

Cool, thanks.  I have seen Aura at my local game store and it looked interesting to me, so I think I might have to invest in that one.  I've never heard of Morpheus though.  I'll check it out.

Some great (although slightly older) Myst-like games:

Rama
Lighthouse
Timelapse
Shivers 1 & 2

And I agree with kuddles: Zork Nemesis is a fantastic game! I'm one of those who prefers it over Myst.

Some good games here. I'll add my favorite game along the lines of Myst -- Obsidian. Very surreal game, but the clues you need to put everything together are always there. And it has some of the best and most original puzzles I've seen anywhere. One problem is that it's relatively rare -- it will probably take some effort and patience to locate. But it's well worth it!

Also, as a fun change of pace, try Zork Grand Inquisitor.  It has good puzzles and is very funny.

I second Shivers 1, one of my all time favorites, also Zork Nemisis or Zork G.I. , Morpheus IS a great game but might be kind of hard to find and also might be hard to run on a newer system, but if you can find it, its worth a try.

Deleted UserTry "Gabriel Knight 2" and you'll hate myst

Gabriel Knight is a trilogy. Those 3 games are some of the most important in game industry ever.

I say GK2 'cause GK1 is more "boring" for a newbie and GK3 is too deep (and too difficult) into story.

Try out GK2 and you'll owe me favor.

Cool, it seems like Zork Nemesis and Grand Inquisitor seem to be pretty popular, so I'll definitely try those.  One thing I have noticed though is how hard it is to find adventure games in stores nowadays, especially any that are a little older.  I felt really lucky when I found a new Longest Journey at my local GameStop the other day for $10.  Where do you guys get most of your adventure games?
o you buy them online or trade for them or just find them at stores?  The only adventure games I see a lot of are the Myst series and a few other recent releases.

Don't forget Dark Falls I+II by Jonathan Boakes.  Also, these are newer games, so you shouldn't have any problems playing them on a contemporary computer.

All games have trouble running on this or that OS, so don't worry: you will have trouble with XP.
It works rather well however, so it shouldn't be so bad... and if it is so bad, you can always use Dos emulation.

So yes, except a few difficulties, or headaches if you aren't lucky, but you should be able to work out something for all such games... with a bit of luck that is.

I remember when WinME came out. Luckily, I knew it to be the crock it was. The greatest strength (and, of course, greatest, weakness as time went on) of Win98 & Win98SE was the fact that both were merely programs 'called' by DOS when loaded. In other words DOS ruled and controlled virtually everything in the end. For people like me who were 'brought up' on DOS, this meant we could go into DOS and fool around all we wanted, plus run games either thru DOS, Windows or both. Eventually, it was obvious that this was causing too many problems as the hardware (eg. video & sound boards & storage devices) became more powerful and the software more demanding so Microsoft decided to dump the DOS core and release WinXP that is an entity unto itself (based on the original WinNT concept & core).

But, in the waning days of Win98SE, WinXP wasn't ready to release so what did they do- they released WinME, an absolutely ridiculous concept: Still sitting on a DOS core, but no direct way to access it and it had been rushed into production such that it was totally bug-ridden But adding insult on injury, certain things were changed in it so that software written to run under Win98SE wouldn't necessarily run on WinME and software publishers, knowing that WinXP was imminent, weren't about to spend a lot of money making their software fully & reliably WinME compatible. Anyone who is still using WinME should bite the bullet and dump it like a bad habit, the sooner, the better!

The future ain't what it used to be!

Ah-h-h, reminds me of my Canadian roots. How many times was I told as a kid: 'Dave, bugger off'. Never hear it in the States for some reason; too bad, because it's almost a replacement for the 'F*** off' term but without the latter's negative connotation!
