LOL! i hear ya, i keep that trout handy for a good walloping every time i think about passing up the opportunity to buy neverhood when it was plentiful on retail shelves.

but... sanitarium isn't $100-$200 (like neverhood); it's still available.  why don't you buy it now?

My eternal problem: no money. I do have some, but I'm saving it for more important things.

Deleted UserHello Josie,

The Forgotten was a big let down and you are correct that it ended abruptly.  Very abruptly.  There were supposed to be 6 more (I am fairly sure of that number) games in the series but they all died on the vine.  Too bad.  I thought that it had potential - though most people didn't.

Yeah, too bad it died. You know, the people who run gamedeveloper.net work for the company that created it! But I think they weren't employed there yet when the game was being made (or only in the final phases).

I still doubt the efficiency of the episode system. Self-contained episodes are one thing, but open-ended ones ... I guess we'll see.

What *really* depressed my were the bugs in RAMA, a fascinating game based on a great book.

I wish I could remake that game myself.

Another game which was depressing was QFG4, not only due to the bugs, but due to the really sad story (the sacrifice of Erana
). Even the ending wasn't all that happy. And QFG5 also had some depressing moments (Hades; the Famous Adventurer before drinking the water).

*** SPOILER ***

At least I got to marry Erana in the end
.

I have to say hands down Black Dahlia, great game, but
the ending was VERY depressing, I was absolutely shocked and couldnt beleive it ended the way it did.

BTW, I kinda enjoyed Mystery of the Druids myself,

I'd have to agree with the "Forgotten" crowd. I felt really depressed when I realized it was just a "part of a game".

Hey, roaming 'round the forum, I found this amazing thread by Jonas were no one has been posting for quite a while ago.

I was surprised that no one named I Have No Mouth And I Must Scream. This is the most depressing game I ever played bar none. Even the initial premise is a lowdown.

Also, Jonathan Boakes named Zork: Nemesis and I must say that the Air world (the mental institute) distressed me a lot.

The ending in Black Dahlia....and after ALLLLLLL that work.....pretty depressing.

RAMA: A fun game the first time around, but the ending just leaves you hanging with a "Is that IT??" feeling. Ticked me off... (and no sequel).

And the end of GK1 and GK3.
And of course Phantasmagoria.
Phantasmagoria 2 sucks!!! Phantasmagoria 1 rules!!!!

Ico (which doesn't get mentioned here much because most of you don't have PS2s) had a shockingly depressing ending, but if you watch until the credits are often it has a happy ending.  So I spent about five minutes depressed and horrified and then I was real happy.

But the most depressing game for me that didn't have a tricky happy ending was the Last Express.  I hate it when
(spoiler)
people fall in love and then never see each other again (I think that's what happened - something depressing happened anyway).

Absolutely have to agree Black Dahlia would be the most depressing that I've played, but only because of the ending.   I haven't even played it again because of that.

I have to agree with nytimesguy, ICO had a depressing ending, for a couple of minutes

also Final Fantasy X (yes its a RPG, I know)  had a really depressing ending. I actually shed a  couple of tears...
I had been playing the game for a really long time (60 hours) over a couple of months, and the though of it ending combined with the sad ending really got to me...

Why was the GK3 ending depressing? What if Gabriel actually failed? What would it be then?
