Deleted UserHey,
I didn't think I was the "independant liker" type of gamer, but with the KQ2-remake and my new credit card, I got the game everybody claims to be the scariest since Amber : DarkFall. The game arrived one week or so after the online command and landed on my to-play pile of game. After few "apetizers" like Dracula Resurection and Alone in the Dark 4, I was ready for something else : so Darkfall made it to the drive a few days ago.

Lights out, sound up, the intro played...Oh my god! By the title I had goose-bumps and my heart was pounding
. First impressions: the voice-acting is wonderfull, the lines are extremely well written and forget about the "independant" thing (ok that's no Riven but the job is done).

That made clear I started playing with a real excitment. For now I'm maybe at the first quarter of the game and I can already say that it's gonna be one of my favorite for a long time (ok my last review-Evil Twin was not "constant", so what
). The ambiance is so heavy I found myself not wanting to exit a room, afraid to go in the hallways
! It makes me think of The Haunting of Hill house (the book or the 60's movie) or Shining...

Another thing extraordinary about the game is the puzzles design if I can call it that way : the letters, pictures, etc are full of signs and sounds that come back in the back of your brain to tell you about a connection to be made...brilliant! I'm not clear again so an example (not really a spoiler): The piano in the bar is missing a note, and the room where you find what to do with the piano as a clock which rings with a melody whose only correct note is the piano's, making you remember about the piano ! Bravo! So far, the game is full of that and the result is a challenging hotel full of informations, puzzles...and ghosts. Well that's a good start for my schizophrenia
.

More later in the game maybe.

Deleted UserJust forgot to say the sounds are really top notch and they do half of the job in the frightening process.

The only bad thing is that with these heavy british accents and no subtitles (I know that would break the effets), I do not understand EVERYTHING that is said. Fortunatly, most of the important voices can be heard many times.

thanks, I surely should have red the readme

I want to add that Jonathan Boakes sent me a mail thanking me for this review
. No need to say I am very flattered, and impressed that he takes such attention to what people think and like of Darkfall...

Hi.  I'm new to the forum but just wanted to add my raves about Dark Fall, which shortly after I began exploring became my favorite game.

Atmosphere.  A truly creepy atmosphere.  Mr. Boakes has done an unparalleled job at creating something that will plain scare you silly.  The creaking timbers, discordant music, thumps, knocks, footsteps, flickers, buzzes...you name it, it's there.  I play this game at night, in the dark, with no one else around, and it borders on terrifying.  While exploring the Station Hotel one night, a crash of thunder sounded out of no where, and I was so totally absorbed in Dark Fall that I _literally_ jumped out of my seat.  Very few games are realistic enough to do that.  Fewer still have such a mezmerizing storyline.  And though reviews of the game tend to categorize the graphics as utilitarian rather than envelope-pushing, one look and you'll see that the hotel and railway station just _couldn't_ look any other way.  I thought the graphics were incredible--dark and chilling.

That such a game can run off of the CD, with no installation, is also a marvel.

With all of the sci-fi and Egypt-Maya-Atlantis stuff out there, it is refreshing to see something so "ordinary" (let's face it, the dilapidated Station Hotel is _not_ the lushly appointed Herculania from Morpheus)  that can keep you spellbound.  And that is what Dark Fall does.

Look, the bottom line is that, if independent game developers can offer stuff this good for $29.95, I doubt I'll ever buy another commercial title.
ark Fall puts them all to shame.

I know I am not alone in eagerly anticipating Dark Fall 2.

I'm just now playing this game - and it's so wonderful, I play a little each night after work, and savor each moment.  I'm such a lover of 1st Person games anyway.  As I'm playing this, I'm thinking, this CAN'T be an Indie game.  It looks so professional.  Jonathan is unbelievably talented.  And my game came only days after I ordered it.  Top notch service, and a Top Notch game.  And I just found out there is a sequel in the works - life is good!!!!

Nice review Randdom
and Brent

I thought Dark Fall was an excellent game also.  The creature(s)? that kept skittering under one of the carpets in the hall would do me in.  The telephone ringing made me jump several times - and the voice whenever I was brave enough to answer it......  Never did manage to play it with ALL the lights out.  Hope Dark Fall 2 is ready SOON.  Jonathan will have a hard time topping this one.  I highly recommend this game to anyone on this forum.

Still adventuring after all these years!

Patiently awaiting The Last Crown: Haunting of Hallowed Isle, and Bracken Tor...

... and Asylum if it's not tooooo scary...

Great great game: Truly scary, interesting, challenging and logical...only good words.
Short enough to let you want for more,
long enough to be a satisfactory play!
The optional paranormal interactions are a marvellous addition!
Waiting patiently for the DF2!

Overall impression of the game 9,5/10
