What is it about HipHop that gets so much vehemence?

I find it indistinguishable from rap, and I detest that too. And, frankly, it doesn't seem to take any particular vocal or instrumental skill to perform from the little I've heard of it. I really don't see the interest in someone chanting words to a repetitive soundtrack. Possibly it's also because I can't relate to the urban life the songs talk aboout -- I'm basically a country boy at heart, having lived my whole life in small towns or the country.
I can't fault it alone, though -- most kinds of popular music these days have the same problem for me, no matter what the genre.

That's half. You get the other half when you've killed western movies. Meet me under the bridge at midnight for it. Bring proof. Don't fail, or you can say bye-bye to Jessica Rabbit.

Life should NOT be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in an attractive and well preserved body, but rather to skid in sideways, chocolate in one hand, wine in the other screaming, "WOO HOO what a ride!!!

Diddy, 50 Cent et al. who regurgitate and prefer to spit rather than create decent music. There are TRUE musicians within the genre, like any other, that whilst they sometimes use samples, play with the artform from using real instruments on top of constructed beats coupled with true, witty polemic.
Try DJ Shadow, Ty, AIM and Jurassic 5, my fave peeps. They're all hip hop. And J5 eat up the stage live - the DJ preprogrammed some childrens toys and made a beat out of it, then a rythym, then a tune. He then slung on a deck around his neck and started scratching to it, live, as if it was a guitar. It was incredible. Most of the Grand Central releases are also great.
As someone who played instruments and performed on occasion for the better part of half my life, I know music when I hear it.

I will be honest and say that I don't listen to much of it, but that is more because I can't relate to it that much, being a pasty white boy from a small Christian town.
However, there are some artists I enjoy who clearly are in it for their love of the artform rather than the MTV lifestyle; most notably Buck 65, K-os, and The Roots.
And for the skill? Imagine a beat poet who has to keep up with the rythym moving twice as fast.

Hooray for stereotypes, huh... sure, they exist, but just because I enjoy NON-MAINSTREAM rap/hiphop doesn't mean I should be filled in as one of them.
I find some of the above comments just plain rude. Feel free to dislike something, no problem. Just don't insult me and my opinions whilst you do it. Hiphop IS music. Get over it.

Besides, how would anyone know the volume level at which your car stereo is set. You probably drive too fast for us to hear it; you know, like when you're going to, and coming from, all those drive-by shootings.

That being said, most of popular rap is absolute garbage. I think my tastes run a tad more mainstream than SJH's, but I am still unbelivably embarrassed by a lot of what shows up on MTV/BET and the radio. 50 Cent, imparticular, has one of the highest success to talent ratios of any musical artist ever.

Try to get over it. I, myself like electro-techno music every once in a while, also NON-MAINSTREAM, but I don't enjoy hiphop/rap. My favorite techno artist is Keith Tucker. Is that so wrong?

Ooh, sorry that happened to your hard drive. I'd be cranky too. OK, back to hiphop .... you can like what even you want, we don't mind, we just had opnions on the ''music'', not you. We still love YOU. [smiley=love.gif]

Status : Offline | I've listen to pop music in all its forms and have played my fair share of piano and written a little music as well. Here's the thing about rap & hiphop: There are talented people involved in it (Eminem being one even though the talent is largely misdirected), but for a lot of hiphop and virtually all of rap, the dirty little secret is: It isn't music! Maybe mostly bad poetry & definitely a good beat, but not music.
If anyone has ever tried to sit down and write a song, the hardest thing to come up with is a tune, a melody- especially one that doesn't sound like something someone has written before. And then on top of that is the hook, either a catchy part of the melody, a lyrical turn of phrase, or both. Lyrics can be difficult also, but the melody is the biggest challenge. Nothing bugs me more than rappers talking about their music- it happens to be missing a major ingredient to be called music. Now, Eminem seems to be able to compose melodies- too bad he doesn't go with that more.

The future ain't what it used to be!

Technically, Rap is music. Otherwise, what would we call atonal and/or non-melodic compositions of avant-garde 20th century composers?
Do Gregorian chants need a catchy hook? Pray, do tell!
I've got a plan and it's as hot as my pants!
