While there are are plenty of first-quality freeware/amateur adventure games out there, I haven't been able to find a decent freeware RPG yet. I am quite new to RPG games, having played P Torment, Anachronox, Morrowind and the so-called RPG's System Shock and Deus Ex (I did not find them to be truly RPG's, by the way). So, an anyone could point me some good freeware RPG's? That should entertain me until I won a bid for Baldur's Gate or Neverwinter...

For more info you can take a look at the column I used to write for JustRPG called 'Indie Roleplaying'.

Bethesda Softworks released their Elder Scrolls: Arena as freeware. And while Sierra is no longer in existence, they did release Betrayal at Krondor as freeware.

Hey, many, many thanks! That's much more than I have dreamt of! I am checking those sites right now as well as your article.

Revliskci Thanks for the info, I already took notice about Arena, but somehow I couldn´t  tweak DOSBOX to make the game run at decent frame rate.

Well, I thought about it, but I'm not too fond of Nethack. I find ADOM to be so much more interesting, deep and consistent. I don't like Nethack's everything-and-the-kitchen-sink mentality. Oh well. A lot of people love it, though.

It's true, it does have kitchen sinks.  I can't argue with that.

Where can I find Arena? Oh, and in dosbox just press Ctrl+F12 a few dozen times. It worked for me in lots of games.

Just downloaded it myself, as a matter of fact. You can find it here:

http://www.elderscrolls.com/downloads/downloads_games.htm

And a manual, since the one that comes with the download is woefully inadequate for an RPG:

Deleted UserWhile we are at it, there is a nice commercial  RPG construction kit out there called RPG Maker 2000 (2003). I think a search in google might bring many pages with downloadable games. Sorry the pages I know are all in German. Doing a quick search myself I found this page for example: http://www.bur.st/~rpgxst/rpgmaker/rpgmaker2000.html

Most of the games look like old SNES titles like Zelda, the early 6 Final Fantasies or Chrono Trigger.
